I know this horse has been beaten to death, so please forgive me. I am about to replace the clutch in my 2003 996 C2; the engine currently is NOT leaking. Should I replace the RMS and IMS, or leave them alone? I hate to fix something that's not broken.
If you see no leaks I would leave them alone. (JMHO)
My 2000 Carerra is at the dealer for a clutch change, the service guy said it was not recommended to change the RMS seal, if it was not leaking.

I see that the 997 seal has been updated! The latest number is 997.101.212.01. Must have happened quite recently.

The parts list current only shows the 01 seal for new Cayennes and 997-2. It is not listed for 9x6 series cars (at this time).

When the clutch disc is worn out the pedal gets firmer and the pedal engage height gets near the top.
Loren and others:
Should one change RMS with clutch. From the web I am getting two opinions, 1. Change the clutch if necessary, but dont mess with RMS if its not leaking, 2. While the clutch is out, change the RMS too.
What is Porsche's official recommendation. Thanks

Porsche has lowered the price of their refurbished engines substantially. Installing an engine is around 2k only, in labor.
What is the ball park price of a refurbished engine (eg for 996 3.4 L)and that of a new engine from Porsche.

Today, I opened the engine compartment and the lid is not staying open. I can open the lid, but then the shock absorber type thing which keeps the lid open, just cannot take the weight and the lid essentially slides shut. It seems that the "shock absorber" that keeps the lid open is faulty ?. Could something else be the problem.

I have a MY2000 C2, stick shift, I dont drag race, but I have noticed that I am quite slow at traffic lights, because the 1st gear is only usable to about 25 mph (after that the rpm's rise, without much gain in speed), after that a shift is needed to second gear. I was curious how others deal with slow start situation ?. Do you rev more in first gear ?, start in second gear ?.
This slowness is embarassing because most cars on the road are automatic today, and they obviously start off quite smoothly and quickly.

I have a similar problem on my ML320, and I have found that filling it slow, helps achieve a more complete fill.

With my previous non P cars, I have only serviced them at the dealership. Now with my MY2000 C2, 45 K miles, which I purchased recently, I am thinking if I should service it at a good independent mechanic. I am near Summit, NJ, so any recommendations would be appreciated. So the question is, if the indy mechanic is good, and they use OEM parts, what do I get extra at the dealership ?.

1.) Some parts of the underside of your car is covered by plastic or metal plates (depending on location) that aid in aerodynamics of the vehicle. A pressure hose and a good bit of water help remove dirt and road salt that may have accumulated there and should not cause any problems (like driving fast over a water puddle).

Guys, just bought my 996 MY2000, coupe. The previous owner drove it in winter, but serviced it every 5K miles at Porsche dealers.
1. Am curious, how do you keep the underside clean ?. Do you wash it at the regular car wash. I read somewhere, that some car washes can damage the wheels etc ?.
2. What products do you use to keep the insider leather and dash clean.
3. Does Porsche raise the car for washing the underside.
4. Since my car is 10 y old, should I get the underside inspected and sealed by Porsche.

I have seen something similar, I purchased my 2009 C4S with 8000 miles on odometer in 2012, At that time it was consuming about 1500-2000 miles/quart on the east coast (where the air can have moisture, so the actual consumption was likely higher). I moved to Las Vegas a desert climate and after several spirited drives, there is no measurable oil consumption anymore. In between I serviced the car at the dealer, who also put some cleaning agent in the fuel tank. I think either the spirited drives or the cleaning agent or both contributed to this. Its almost miraculous, since the oil bar has not gone down over the last 4800 miles!.
