  1. Maurice and Loren,

Thanks for the information. I’ve cleared the CEL a few of times, before having a reader and the CEL would come back on. The latest time it came back on the very next day whereas before it took a few months and then a few weeks. I thought it was related to the K & N CAI because of all the reports of CEL associated with the mod.

Do either of you know the equivalent Bosch part number and an internet supplier?

Thanks again and have a great day.

    Lee

  2. That’s a loaded question!

Use the search feature i.e. 996 reliability, engine failure, 996 RMS etc… There is a lot of information and opinions out there. You may want to visit Rennlist and do the same search, it get even a hotter there if you know what I mean.

I wouldn’t let that stop me from buying a 996 even though I’m one of the few or many, depending on who you ask, that has had premature engine failure.

  3. Just letting the “engine” idle doesn’t warm-up the “car” it needs to be driven to bring all the systems up to operating temp. I’ve also read, and it makes since to me, that at idle the RPMs are too low for good circulation of the motor oil.

So I start my car put on my seat belt and drive. To be safe I keep the RPMs below 4000 until my temp gauge reads normal after that it’s good to bring the RPMs to about 7300 at least once or twice a day. :drive:

  4. I am finally in the market for a new car after being carless for the past few years in NYC. I am moving away and will need a new Porsche (at least new to me). I had a boxster in the past and loved it. Now I that I am looking again I am not sure what I want yet. I have narrowed it to roughly 2 cars a 2007 Boxster S and a 911 2004 C4S with very low milage. I am dring both tomorrow.

Is the 911 that much more car? Would the convertible boxster be more fun? What about performance? Resale?

Price is pretty similar on these 2.

    Thanks,

    John W

Either is a great car, no doubt. If I had to choose I would pick the C4S though I would rather the rear wheel drive over 4 wheel drive.

  5. I had the disheartening experience of watching my 99 996 burn today. I was driving down the road, and all of a sudden the dash lights came on and the engine died. I managed to make it thru the light and around a corner. The dash was smoking thru the AC vents. I popped the hood and checked the battery....no smoke or sparks. Went back to the car and it was burning under the dash.....dropping firebombs of burning plastic onto the floorboards. I tried to stomp it out but the stuff was like liquid napalm. The car started filling with smoke, so I wend in thru the passengers side and started hauling out my paperwork and glasses etc from the center console.....all of a sudden BAM...the air bag on the steering wheel deployed and hit me in the side of the head. It was a glancing blow thank goodness or it could have broken my dogone neck. I have a fused spine at C4 and that could have paralyzed me.

At any rate....an unmarked CHP car came up and the fellow hit it with some extinguisher dust that effectively turned my car into a barn find. I'm afraid the car is toast....so I'll be looking for a twin turbo to replace it.

Just a reminder to those of you out there who think it will never happen....don't cheap out...go buy a good Halon extinguisher, and if the car catches fire inside....remember to watch out for the air bags....they can be very dangerous if they hit you just right.

    Chuck

    Chuck,

What a drag. I’m so sorry to hear about your car but I’m glad that you weren’t injured. A TT will be good therapy.

    Good luck.

  6. Just my luck; I ran over some road debris on the I10. Again! :cursing: I’m don’t know what it was but it was like I ran over a ramp and both tire on the right side left the pavement and when it touched down the passenger side side airbag deployed.

I couldn’t find any other damaged. I guess I’m lucky in that respect.

Anyone know how much this part cost and if this a DIY project?

  7. My CEL came on; on my way home this afternoon. I recently bought the ODB-2 scan tool manufactured by Alex C. Peper; so I put it to use. I received the following codes P1123 Oxygen Sensing Adaptation Area 1 (Cylinders 1 - 3) - Lean Threshold and P0102 Mass Air Flow Sensor - Below Lower Limit.

My questions are what can cause these codes and what if any corrective action is needed. I have a 99 996 C2 with a “new remanufactured engine” with less than 12,000 miles on it. The only engine mods I have are GHL sport mufflers and a K & N CAI.

  8. Since the spoiler is opening and closing but not at the usual speeds it makes since that it’s programmed different. You would think that it could be re-programmed to factory setting: maybe something to consider whenever you bring it in for service. I wouldn’t worry about it.

The coolant leak is either the coolant tank itself or the cap. There is a DIY on replacing the tank if you are so inclined or have your mechanic do it. I need to replace mine shortly after I bought my car and it cost me over $900 at the Porsche dealer. If I had to do it all over again I would do it myself. Do a search on “coolant tank cap” for the upgraded part number.

    Good luck.

  9. I do like the wheels on #2 better but I would go with #1. The paint on the front bumper cover on #2 doesn’t match. Why? If it was repainted because of minor damage or just because of chips no need to worry but I would want the paint to match.

The 01 has the three spoke stirring wheels (a lot of people prefer the three spoke), cup holder and it looks like a painted center console.
