    I'm thinking about getting a satellite radio receiver. I don't really want to make it a premanent fixture in my Boxster but I don't want a hokey install either. I see they now have portable units and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them or any other type of removable units. Can anyone share what they have done? Thanks, Jon

    I haven't seen their carbon fiber but I have had them match some of my existing dark burl interior and the results were great. Reasonable too! http://www.classictrimwtp.com/index.html Jon

    If your M490 amp says 4X40 on the label then one channel drives the front speakers and the second drives the doors. The only crossover I am aware of is on the front speaker plates where there is a crossover between the 4" and the 3/4 tweeter. I doubt there is a crossover in the AMP and I suspect the door speakers are fed all frequencies. I know there are no crossovers in the doors. If you add the PNP kit in this configuration you need to drive it off of the head unit. On my '00 986, I bought a 6X40 996 amp on ebay for $50 and drive the PNP from it. Jon

    My carpet mats keep moving around on me. I noticed they have what looks like circles of the loop part of velcro on the bottom but there is nothing on the floor for it to hook on. I since found the following picture in an earlier post. If these are real Porsche items do they have a P/N? Where can I get them or something else to keep my carpet in place? Thanks, Jon

    The center vent assembly was $99. I can't remember what the vents were off the top of my head. I'm sure if you email them they will give you a quote for whatever you want done. They are very responsive to email. I think the normal turn around is about three weeks. Jon

    Loren, If this posting should be somewhere else please move it. I just wanted folks to see the latest upgrade to my Boxster. I have always liked wood trim in a car. Unfortunately, mine only came with a dark burl gear shift and emergency brake from the factory. I looked at the tequipment accessories from Porsche, but the prices were unbelievable. I found Classic Trim WTP in an earlier post and emailed them to see what they could do. They told me about their water transfer process and assured me it would match my existing wood trim. I was worried at first, and decided to find some parts on ebay to have processed into "wood" trim. I started with the center vent and the two side vents. The results were in my opinion spectacular. Here are a couple pictures of the parts installed in my car. They can do all sorts of patterns including carbon fiber. The dark burl is the only one I have seen in person and believe me it is impossible to tell from my original Porsche parts. I plan on doing my center console, door handle trim and door speaker grills next. Jon Jon

    I need to remove the headlight switch from the left vent. I've done some looking and I can't find any tips for removal. I'm hesitant to just start pulling and prying on it. Can someone help me with how to remove it or point me to a link? Thanks, Jon

    Are you sure you want to do this? The door speakers are designed to be subs all be it small ones. If you block the bass to them they will probably produce a really muddy mid range. If you want to alter the door speakers from subs to full range you really should just replace the speakers. Jon

    As part of my budget audio upgrade on my '00 non S I had previously added the PNP rear speaker kit. It helped but wasn't spectacular. Someone on the forum sugested I would get better performance from them if I ran the through an amp like my front and door speakers and not off the head unit. To that end I found a 996 M490 6X40 amplifier on ebay. Fortunately, the new amp was removed from it's previous car with a pair of wire cutters so I got the connector. I was able to remove four pins from the old connector and put them in my existing connector to provide output leads for the rear left and right. I plugged everything back together and everything seems to be working fine. My final problem is how to extend the PNP speaker leads that are currently plugged into the back of the head unit out to the amp. I pulled the head unit(cdr220) and looked around but I didn't see any easy access. Help! As a result of my ebaying for parts I now have a collection of original Porsche speakers. If anyone has a blown speaker PM me and I can probably help you out. Jon

    While I'm sure there may be those that disagree...ground is ground. Whether you connect to the (-) post of your battery or to another location on the frame really doesn't matter. Basicaly the ampacity of the ground connection needs to be as good as the fuse on the + side. Any connection to the firewall or any other "connected" metal part of the car should be fine. The diagram only shows one connection to the battery as mandatory. The second power connection seems to be used to control power based on the position of the ignition. It may be used to disable your power supply when the ignition is off to prevent draining the battery. I would need to see more of your documentation to be sure. Jon

    I've never looked at the cell phone wiring to which you refer but I doubt it could carry the load of a PC. I would guess the max draw on a cell phone would be around 500 milliamperes. The diagram you show is fused at 15 amps. I would run a separate circuit as the diagram shows. Jon

    What OS are you going to run on this? I'm guessing data input will be a pain in the butt. Are you going to try and use a touch screen keyboard? I'm a computer guy but it seems to me this will not be very user friendly. I'm curious to hear more... Jon

    Great reply Cassiebox! You have validated much of what I suspected. I think I will add an amp for the rears as you suggest and replace the dash speakers as well. The only other thing I think I will do is change the door speakers and upgrade them to 6.5" speakers. I found some other posts on this and it looks fairly simple. I can do all of this for less than $400 and I'm sure it will make a huge improvement. This will preserve the original look while providing much improved listenability. Any other comments? Jon

    Hi, I am considering audio upgrades to my '00 non-S. I currently have the Becker CDR-220, OEM Dash and door speakers and upgraded PNP rear speakers. Where should I start? I would like better low end performance so should I replace the door speakers? Change the amplifier? How big of a hassle is a sub? Any comments will be appreciated. Jon
