  1. I had to do this on the drivers side rear to get to the potentiometer.  There are two clips on mine that aren't mentioned.  I recommend:

    2a.  remove the speaker grill

    2b.  remove the speaker (one torx screw at top, then an L-shaped plastic tab at the bottom.

    2c.  Unplug the speaker.

    2d.  There are two clips on either side of the speaker - one to the left which you have to squeeze tabs to release and another to the right with a pin at the bottom and a clip (that pulls out) at the top.

     

    I ended up following the directions listed above and broke the plastic clip on the left side.  I was able to glue it back but a typical aged plastic piece.

  2. I replaced my CD holders with the shelf. A thought occurred to me (a mind is a dangerous thing) re: power outlets. I purchased a multi-power port (12V & USB) that I'm going to wire into the cigarette lighter to provide additional spots for GPS, Radar detector, phone charging etc. I plan to attach the port to the shelf with velcro and wire through back of shelf (out of sight). I'll still be able to put items in the tray, but have the added power ports.

    I'll take some before / after photos to illustrate the process.

  3. So, what's the latest on these? Needing another winter project... If I wait too long, may have to Fiskerize my exhaust... :drive:

    The manufacturer's shipping is taking far longer than I had planned, but they should be en route. I'll keep you guys posted on when they become available, which should be soon, but I won't know until they get here.

  4. I was at the Porsche dealership last month and one father just bought his son a new turbo GT3 after graduating from college with a 4.0 average - that was the deal, he get a 4.0 and dad would buy him whatever car he wanted.

    I would have loved to have a 911 when I was 16. In retrospect, probably best that I waited a few years till the testosterone levels declined to a reasonable level and my driving skills came up to a reasonable level. Your son may be an exception to the rule and not to mention the stats that insurance companies collect about teenage drivers. Personally, I'd get him a less powerful fuel efficient car that he could learn on first, then dangle the pcar carrot out there for a reward for accident / ticket free driving when he graduated, turned 18, got into college, etc., etc.. You should visit www.wreckedexotics.com and read some of the stories about teenage drivers with high performance vehicles...

    Whatever your decision, I wish your son all the best. He's lucky to have parents like y'all. Be safe!

    It was an interesting article. Thanks for sharing.

    I don't necessarily agree with him, but I don't have a lot of experience driving pre 1998 pcars. One thing for sure, I'm enjoying the heck out of my 996 and am happy that the prices are in the mid-20s, much to the chagrin of the article's author. The PSM has saved my butt more than once already, the interior is very plush vs what I remember about my brother-in-law's 70ish 911.

    It may be that the author considered his purchase of the '99 996 as a "golden investment opportunity" he could cash in on it, but is less than happy that it did not turn out as planned. He did mention that he owned 3 Porsches, BTW.

  6. 55 - got my first - 01 996 Cab

    Kids were (finally)out of college and working. I had "eased" my wife into weekend rides with a '89 560SL MB (age 52). Felt that with the global economic conditions, better get one now, so I traded up... I'm not having a mid life crisis (I probably passed mid life years ago). I figure now I'm SKIING, Spending Kids Inheritance.
