  1. Hi Guys,

I'm totally depressed because I can't get pissed off at my wife.

I've spent hours and even days washing and waxing this vehicle but all it took was one night parking in front of her sister's house was all it took to get major water spots everywhere due to the sprikler system.

I've tried clay bar, polish, and waxing but I'm still seeing the water spots.

If I can't remove the spots, I'm going to treat this vehicle like and other car in the house and just let it be....i dont care anymore....

    I'm so pissed

    Help!

  2. I live in California and it's summer now so the temperature will average in the 80's F. According to the manual, it recommends 15w-40, 20w-40, and 20w-50. I'm more concerned about the SL/SM API certification though because the manual says API SH.

I'm not to concerned though because I'll change it back to full synthetic in about 4000 miles but yes I agree that I did made a mistake. :)

  3. My oil change interval is usually around the 7k miles mark. Today, I went to a local autoparts store to get some Mobil 1 Synthetic but I saw the VR1 Racing oil for $3/qt.

I took a chance and bought it because it was so cheap compare to the Mobil 1. Since it said "racing oil", I'd figure it can't hurt because I'm not racing. Right?

Also, instead of synthetic, I just went with the conventional because my oil change interval is shorter than what Porche recommends anyway.....right? :)

  4. There are two leads going to this switch. Are you saying that I connect the two alligator clips to the two leads? I was going to ziptied the switch but she told me to remove it because it would be dangerous if she or someone else accidentally start the car in gear and not depressing the clutch pedal. I'm always careful to start my car in neutral but she told me that she starts it in gear all the time. (I ran out to the garage and remove the ziptie!)

Dude, she drives a Boxster and you drive an Acura? Do you have a picture of her and is she looking to trade up?

Seriously, troubleshooting an intermitant problem is tough. Buy a short jumper wire with two alligator clips and jump the "pedal down" switch. Drive it a few days and if it dowsn't act up, it's the switch/ I've also jumped switches like that with a paper clip to test them.

Let us know what you find.

Chuck (drives the Boxster while the wife drives a Smart).

  5. For sure! I'm willing to trade my ride for hers anyday.

She can drive my 1994 Acura Integra.

Seriously? My '03 Boxster has been rock solid - only one minor issue (light switch) in the 85K+ miles I've put on it - many of them harder / faster than most. My Honda and Toyota on the other had - several more issues before the first 50K.

Kudos to the folks who helped out on the frustrated post!!! clapping.gif

  6. ROW DME?

Is that an option within the Durametric software?

Definitely, the carpet was bunched up when it came back on a flarbed. :(

I was able to start the boxster but a few minutes later I wasn't.

I have to drive it myself for a few days to learn more about this problem.

So she could have bumped-start it? I should have told her to try that....

Also, check to ensure the carpet isn't bunched up under the clutch pedal restricting the movement of the pedal.

    Bill

I don't think you can "bump-start" the car with a bad clutch interlock switch. Not sure if it disables the ignition or just the circuit to the starter solenoid.

That issue with bunched up carpets under the clutch pedal that "whall" mentions is a fairly common problem, so make absolutely sure that there is nothing restricting the full movement of the clutch pedal. If it annoys you, you can jump the two sides of the switch with a small piece of wire, but then you have to remember to have the clutch depressed or the tranny in neutral so as to avoid having the car lurch forward when you turn the key (like in the old days). The ROW DME program allows the car to be started without having to step on the clutch.

    Regards, Maurice.

  8. The engine was not able to turn over at all. Nothing. I can't even hear a clicking when I turn the key.

I just connected the durametric and no codes came out.

Now, this time I really made sure that I depress the clutch pedal down really hard....it started!

So I was able to replicate the problem. If I depress it normally, it would not start. But if I really concentrate and press it down all the way down, it would start.

clutch interlock switch? what the heck is that?

maybe... some ignition switches are bad out of the box.

or could be the clutch interlock switch or a key issue.

Need more details about what happened when you tried to start it?

Did it turn over or nothing, etc.? Any pending codes (autozone or th elike will read for free)

    Tell us more

    :)

  9. She just called me saying that it wont start...again! after I just replaced the ignition realy.....POS!

This is the 2nd time in a month that this has happened to her.

I bought the Durametric and there was no error code. I just had to reset the airbag light.

Could she have pop the clutch to start the car?

So it got towed back home on a flatbed. Guess what? I was able to start it!

Then i few minutes later I tried starting again but it wouldn't start again....

So defintely the ignition switch relay again?

  10. I'm new to Porsche and also a newbie when it comes to fixing my own vehicles.

I have to admit that doing it yourself will save you a ton. Get Wayne R. Dempsey's book.

    Lots of pictures....:)

The book saved me about $1500 so far. I completed a major tune-up myself. It took 4 hours but I saved. I spent less than $200 in parts.

What it cost me recently to service 01 Boxster

    -15w50 Mobile 1 $50

    -WIX filter $20

    -NGK BKR6EK plugs $40

The tasks are pretty simple. Got parts from Oreilly's Auto

  11. It's a $10-$15 switch relay that you have to replace. It's a pain in the rear to get under the dash to replace it. If you're a big guy, it's going to be very difficult to get under the steering wheel area to replace it. Good luck!

Start looking for a flat-head screw driver. Small and short....about 3 inches in length....

Once you get it fixed, pray that you won't set off the airbag light.....then you have to order the Durametric tool to reset the light...about $300

    Thanks Loren,

I've seen these articles and other ones from pelican parts.

I'm still trying to figure out if I need a whole assembly or just the switch.

I think my real question is does this behavior sound as if it's just a switch replacement?

    Regards,

    Jim

  12. You're out of your mind. :)

Bulletproof over Hondas? I don't think so.

Just wait for your $10 ignition relay to fail. It's going to take an hour or two to get under the dash to replace it (that's if you're not fat).

Then wait for the Airbag light to come on.

I've own my Boxster for only six months. Although I love to drive it, I wouldn't say it's more reliable than a Honda or bulletproof. :)

133xxx on my '99 Boxster, bought in '04 with 50k miles.

City/highway/long road trips living in Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley, PA.

    mpg:17-24. max: 28mpg highway.

MAJOR: clutch right after I bought it.

MINOR: MAF sensor, just like everyone else, and routine maintenance since then.

Burns no oil, loses no fluids.

Mobil One every 15000 miles, just like Porsche says.

More reliable than any of the Hondas I've owned. No lie.

My '05 Cayenne Turbo has to be babied or it'll fall apart. The boxster: bulletproof.

  13. 99 Boxster

    59k

Now I have the airbag warning light coming on and staying. I bought this used at 49k 5 months ago.

Last week I had to replace the ignition switch relay (pita!). Did I do something to cause this while installing the ignition relay?

I'm in sacramento. Does anyone have a obdc reader for the porche that I can use to scan for the error code?

    Thanks
