  1. Recently I heard a knocking noise on the right hand side of the engine.  After idling for a few mins it goes away.  It appears when i do not start w/ the heat/ac controls turned on I do not hear the noise.  2001 carrera cab 64k miles

I saw another thread which ppl though it could be tensioners, piston/camshaft.

Anyone seen this issue and resolved?

  2. I have a dead battery and cannot open the trunk.

I have tried charging through the cigarette lighter, but not getting any power through there.

I have tried connecting to the battery post in the fuse panel and the door post but i get no indicator on the battery charge is being put through.

I read an article once that u can remove the right wheel liner and there is a manual handle to release the trunk.  Anyone have instructions on this?

  3. 2001 996 47K miles.

The engine temperature or coolant temperature needle has always sat on the 8 (180), once when i did a long 3 hr drive it drifted to then end of the zero, but it was a 3 hr drive on a 90degree day, but no big deal, that was 3 yrs ago.  It has always sat on the 8.  I noticed recently during city driving in about 15 mins, the needle starts to drift to the end of the the zero, and when its on the highway for a few minutes it would lower back into the beginning of the zero, but never back onto the 8.

No leaks under the car, i see no signs of coolant in the engine, nor do i smell coolant dripping onto hot parts.

My question is is this a precursor for something failing?  Anything i can check?

    Any advice appreciated.

  4. i dont know about the clutch fork or release bearing, but i did speak to another shop.  They also leaned toward the release bearing could be the cause, and its a standard part that is included w/ the clutch kit, so should have been replaced at the time of the clutch repair.

I was kind of hoping it was a belt slipping vs clutch repair job, but thanks for the feedback and fast repsonse

  5. 01 996 Cab

    Here is the scenario.

When i release the clutch halfway and add some gas to the bite point some times i hear a squealing noise coming from the rear.  It does not do it every time and the car is a daily driver.  It seemed to do it more frequent when the weather got warmer, but some days it does not do it all.

I had the clutch replaced in Feb 15 when they installed an IMS.  When they put in a new clutch, they installed a new flywheel kit also.

Any ideas to what this may be?  Im hoping its not clutch related as I then have to go into the back and forth of them honoring their work.  I already called the shop and they informed me their is no warranty on the clutch repair, which i find unacceptable.

    Opinions welcome

  6. I am looking to replace my radio w/ a double DIN unit that has GPS and bluetooth.  My antenna is broken and FM comes in and out, shop said only way to solve that is to replace windshield, so i was thinking i could stream pandora or a playlist off my phone.

In the past i have always had Alpine units, anyone got any recommendations and any gotchas i should be looking out for?

Not looking to break the bank, but would also like the porsche emblem to show up when u power on the radio, my friend has that on his Audi

  7. I want a new exhaust for my my01 996 and have been waiting for the fabspeed valvetronic for some time. They are supposed to be re-engineering it. I like the fact that it's loud and then from the key fob I can put it in track mode and make it track loud.

My question is are there any other manufacturera that have an offering like this? They also have the maxfloq which is quiet and then loud when u get on the gas, but my heart is set on scaring unsuspwcring women and children in sidewalks.

    Any guidance appreciated.

  8. When i drive the car, doesnt seem to matter short or long trip.  I've been noticing a bad smell when i pull into the garage.  I cant quite put my finger on the smell. but it smells bad, not a bunt rubber smell.  Not sure where its coming from.  When I open the deck lid it doesnt appear any stronger in odor.

I looked under the car no leaks that i can visibly see.  Air filter and cabin filer was just changed.

    Ideas?

  9. Thanks JFP.  I found the DIY on cleaning the throttle body so i figured i would give it a shot. I am a mechanical imbecile but like to learn. After watching a youtube to get the air cleaner removed, i wiped out the throttle body. and cleared the CEL.  I did not have carb cleaner so just wiped it out.  I did see a brown ring. Appears t be idling better, i'll give it a few days and see if throws another code

    thanks all

  10. Folks, i noticed the car was idling a little rough btwn 400-700rpms and wouldn't hold and idle smoothly at 400rpms.  I purchased an OBD scanner and pulled the above fault code. I did some searching on the site and i see similar issues pointing to MAF, throttle body or intake leak.   The MAF was already replaced about 10k miles ago.

Any other thoughts?  i have to swap the winter tires over, so will likely have the shop address it.

    MY 01 996 carrera 2 ~35k miles
