  1. Yeah, blinking is very much a european thing. Over there it is routinely used for passing, and I think it makes sense. In the US many frown at that and I'm told some cops stop you if they see you blink.

    In the US, "blinking" is commonly used to warn oncomming drivers of a speed trap. It is a violation, at least in my state anyway, if you are caught doing so. We do it anyway.

    ResB, what does "t#@t" mean anyway??

  2. i was not aware you can service/care for it. is there an an actual service that is recommended at X miles prior to it going out?

    My view is that anything can be refurbished. When I worked for the Navy, we literally took junk and reworked it to new standards. In the case of my alternator, I heard the bearings becomming noisy. It still has the original regulator. It's not a daily driver anymore but I keep it on a charger. Some items I just have a feel for when they might need attention.

  3. Did a quick price check for what Porsche wants for an alternator. About $1,320 new and $921 for a rebuilt. Makes me mad.

    I think it's a crime what they charge for this stuff. These cars are no different from any other, and in some cases, not as good. I wonder how much of the car is VW design and manufacture anyway?

  4. Likely Porsche uses a Bosch alt, simmilar to the Bosch in my VW. My VW alt has 240,000 miles on it. I had it serviced once about a hundred K ago. New bearings & brushes and had the commutator turned (cut on a lathe). Cost was about $35 I think.

    It's like anything else. It will last a lifetime if you care for it and service it properly (as long as there are no design flaws). It just matters how much and to what level you want to get involved. The military has bombers that are 50 years old and are still in active service.

Just spoke with Sun Coast and their option at this point is a reman. and it will take 1 month to get as it has to come from Germany, for $5900 and change plus roughly $600 in shipping w/ core return and a $1200 Core charge. They do not have any new ones avail. at $8200 and change no core and only $300 shipping, they also said that it isn't showing that there are any avail. in Germany either. I would like to find out about getting the replacement parts Syncros and other necessary items required to do the 2nd gear syncro replacement. Please if someone knows how to get ahold of these please let me know the details or if you had the work done please let me know. It looks like I will have the clutch, tranny, and RMS done at the same time so I would like to keep the parts price reasonable as possible, The clutch kit is onlyh $405 through them so that is good news and the RMS is a stop at a fast food joint Yea!

    Manual trans syncros are real sensitive to fluid type. Make sure you use the correct spec. I had problems with my GLI 5 speed when it had 225,000 miles on it. I found a specialest in CA that rebuilds VW transmissions on an exchange basis. I wanted to keep my original tranny. I fedXd it from NH to CA. They went through the whole thing - bearings, gasgets, syncros and anything that was worn - and gave me a report. I had it back and installed in a week. Cost was $800. Shipping was about $50. It's like a new transmission. There must be pleanty of shops that specialize in Por trans.

  6. I see what you are trying to do by your other post. HID runs on AC and the square wave is the clipped AC needed to boost the 14VDC to 20Kv. Seems to me that the input should be clean. Keep in mind that once HIDs start and fail, they need a cool-down time before they'll light.

    Sorry, but I think the only correct and legal way to convert to HID is spending the grand for the factory retrofit kit. Good luck though.

  7. Jason at Beverly Hills Porsche told me that once Porsche replaces the engine, they don't warranty the new one, they've essentially covered the car thru one engine and that's all the warranty does.

    Jason is misinformed.

    I purchased my car new. It came with a 4 year/ 50K mile warranty. Unless Porsche proves mistreatment by me, they have to cover as many engines as it takes to fulfill the warranty. Search the forums and you'll find others with multiple engine replacements under warranty.

    I'm getting ready to tighten the thumb screws over this car. My warranty expires in July and I have to act before then. Good luck with yours. If you plan to keep it, you may want to investigate extended warranties.
