  1. My car had a factory replacement engine about 7 years ago. Perhaps they "repaired" this part of the old harness when they put the new engine in and used the same color wire. No idea...

    But I think I've figured it out. I traced the wires on the other knock sensor back to the DME. There are separate pins for knock sensor signal and knock sensor ground on the DME, so the polarity must matter.

    Incidentally, I was wrong in my previous post; the DME pins I mentioned are for 97-99 Boxsters. For my 2001 S, the pins in question are on connector C at the DME (just in case someone else comes across such an issue in the future):

    pin 36: signal knock sensor 2

    pin 37: ground knock sensor 2

    pin 49: signal knock sensor 1

    pin 50: ground knock sensor 1

    Based on tracing back the wires, the signal / ground pins on the knock sensor connector are shown in the picture below.

  2. It will be possible to push the pins out, split open the crimp and insert a new length of wire (say 2") and recrimp them. Then solder to the wiring in the car and cover with double wall heat shrink. If what I have just said scares you, then perhaps repeat that to an automotive electrical guy or even a car stereo installer.

    But now I actually have a bigger problem: it turns out that the two wires from the engine harness are the same color (don't know why; on the other knock sensor the wires are different colored). So now I don't know which wire goes to which terminal on the connector.

    How do I figure this out without trial and error? I _think_ that one wire is signal, and the other is ground?

    I know from the workshop manual that the signal wire goes to DME connector, pin 13. So I guess I could do a continuity test between DME pin 13 and each of the two wires to determine which one is the signal wire. But which terminal on the knock sensor connector does the signal wire go to?

  3. I had been getting a P0327 (knock sensor circuit bank 1) code on my Boxster, and today I had time to investigate. It turned out that the wiring to the knock sensor was completely severed at the connector (see picture; this is the connector on the engine harness that plugs into the knock sensor).

    How do I best repair this? Can these connectors be bought somewhere?

  4. Thank you for the responses. As an update, I contacted Durametric, and it turns out that the software does not currently correctly display OBD2 codes for a variety of cars. So the code numbers above are incorrect, but Durametric says the plain text error messages are correct.

    I have since erased the faults, and only one has come back:

    Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor - Value below lower limit value, test conditions are not-completed, fault is not currently active and is not causing a DTC light.

    I guess I will take a look at the wiring to that sensor next. The car seems to run fine.

    I have a 2006 Cayenne S, and checked for codes with the Durametric cable. The CEL is not on, but there are several pending codes that Durametric displays:

    P0147

    Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Bank 1 or Single Sensor - Value below lower limit value, test conditions are not-completed, fault is not currently active and is not causing a DTC light

    P012C

    Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected - Upper limit value exceeded, test conditions are not-completed, fault is not currently active and is not causing a DTC light

    P012D

    Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected - Upper limit value exceeded, test conditions are not-completed, fault is not currently active and is not causing a DTC light

    P012E

    Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected - Upper limit value exceeded, test conditions are not-completed, fault is not currently active and is not causing a DTC light

    P0130

    Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected - Upper limit value exceeded, test conditions are not-completed, fault is not currently active and is not causing a DTC light

    I am confused about these code numbers. The official OBD2 code description for P0147 is different ("O2 sensor heater") than what Durametric outputs here. And the other codes don't seem to correspond to the usual OBD2 code definitions either.

    So, I have two questions:

    1. why are these code descriptions different from offical OBD2 codes? Is it because they are pending codes?

    2. any ideas on what could have caused these codes? Seems to be all bank 1 misfires, so I'd think it unlikely to be the coils...

  6. I plan on changing the front (before-cat) oxygen sensors in my 2006 Cayenne S. After doing some research, I am very confused about what type of oxygen sensors are used on these cars. Are they narrow band or wide-band sensors?

    Looking at, for example, http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_parts/oxygen_sensor/porsche/cayenne.html, they mention two different types of oxygen sensors for a 2006 Cayenne S: one being apparently narrow band, the other wide-band. This particular web site states, "Vehicles equipped with Air Fuel Ratio Sensors may look very similar to the Oxygen Sensor. Please confirm the correct part before ordering and if the connector does not match, do not install." Does this mean that some Cayennes come with wide band sensors, and some with narrow band sensors?

    Can anyone shed light on this? Thanks!

    The Porsche parts list says (for MY01 Boxster S):

    Fronts = blue/white -- stock US suspension (not transmission specific or model specific)

    Rears = violet/yellow -- stock US "S" suspension (6 speed)

  8. My 2001 S 6-speed shows the following coil spring color codes (dabs of paint on the springs):

    front: violet / white

    rear: violet / yellow

    The Bentley manual says that violet / white is for an S model with tiptronic; violet / yellow for S with manual.

    Are these springs the same, or does my car have the wrong front springs??
