  1. Only 2 posts over here Rob? Quite the opposite over at Rennlist :)

I've had zero technical issues with my Porsches, (knocks on wood)... :P

I'm going to hold onto the 2004 for the long haul, so my guess is that I'll be posted here more as the car gets older...

I'm seriously considering leasing a Cayman S, I'm going to look at the car next week... looks like a car that would be fun to toss around the track.

Rob - so what was the issue? taking my car in for tires at a local place this weekend, may get an alignment as well...

  2. My front left parking light bulb is out, I had the dealer replace it a month ago but it's out again. I looked at the bulb and it seems ok. The dealer said just a burned light bulb nothing else. Any ideas what could be the problem? I tried autozone, pep, murray's for a new one and they don't carry an H6 and don't have it listed in their system, where can I get replacements other than the dealer?

had the same problem....... new bulb fixed..... try brandywine porsche, couldnt get at a local auto parts store.

  3. Coolant is yellow/green in color - smells sweet and tastes really bad.

Coolant tank and/or cap failures are fairly common.

Bad oxygen sensor? Could be but I would ask him to read out all the P-codes and post them here.

long shot - but was the a/c on, was it hot outside? could be condensation or water build up (was the fluid very viscous?)

  4. I have the Carrera Classic II (5 spokes) wheels and have a few specks/rock chips on my left rear wheel that I'd like to get touched up. They are very very minor and not worth painting but they bother me everytime I give my wheels a good cleaning. What touch up paint (color code) can I get from autozone to get them fixed? I prefer a pen/brush type. TIA.

i would leave them, lends character. often times when painting wheels with touchup it looks more noticeable. my 0.02

  5. Here are the cracks in my Boxster tank.

You have the old cap, so replace it.

If it were me I would replace the suspect tank since it is already out.

TP - what is exactly wrong with the .00 cap? I upgraded to the .01, but am still trying to figure out the differences, they look almost identical... Ross

i will take a pic. of the 00 cap and 01 cap when i got home tonight, very interesting designe change.

really??? my 00 and 01 look very similair, they both have the mesh on the inside.

  6. I did not have have any problems with the 285s and 10" factory wheels (63 mm offset).

If you use larger sizes like 295 and 11" wheels then I think you may need to taper that seam back.

    I also have a 2001 996 Coupe. What are the handling advantages/disadvantages of installing 225/40/18 fronts vs 235/35/18 and 265/35/18 vs 285/30/18 rears ?

FWIW It seems some tires, like Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s, only come in 265/35... not 285/30.

  7. My '98 996 C2 coupe is running at 1.5 bar at idle when fully warm. I have only had it a few months and I am sure that it was slightly higher when I first got it (the oil level has only dropped slightly from full to slightly below full).

Should I check anything? or is it only concerning if it now drops below the 1.5?

    Thanks.

I am not positive, but when it is very hot outside and the car is hot I believe I have seen the needle at 1...

  8. The later cars all have 8" fronts. I think it improves overall handling with the proper tire sizes. I have 8" fronts with 10" rears (Sport Designs) on my car with 225/40 x 18 front tires and 285/30 x 18 rears. With the 8" front wheels I could go with 235/40 x 18 in front and neutralize the affect of the wider rear tires. In fact a 245 tire will fit with just a little rubbing at full lock.

It all comes down to how you want your car to handle.

If you want a smoother ride(its a daily driver, no track), which combo would be better:

    225/40R18 and 265/35R18

    or

    225/40R18 and 285/30R18

    I would imagine the 265/35?

  9. Thanks to both of you. After reading your posts, I simply pulled harder. That extra effort, maybe combined with bumps from the ride that I just completed, did the trick. Until I read your posts, I was not willing to pull that hard. In my previous 928, the Blaupunkt slid out like a server from a rack, with no resistance at all.

This forum is always great .... but same day service is more than I expected.

To remove, all you have to do is push in the blue metal tabs on the side of the radio, keys will slide out effortlessly... Ross

  10. MY99-01 replacement engines don't have the AC attached, MY02-04 do. At least, AFAIK.

Thanks for the replies. There have been a lot, or at least what rumor has as a lot, of returned 996 engines. I have visions of these same engines being dismantled, washed and scrubbed, re-assembled, bubble gum and band-aids applied, then sent back out as "re-manufactured" :D.

What are "re-manufactured" engines, anyway? As was said, are they simply new engines, never placed in a car, that were re-tuned after failiing a dyno?

hmm.. another selling point, 2Y warranty on the engine?

  11. Boil it if your are going to drink it, or live in New York. I grew up in New York.

I use San Jose Municipal tap water, as does my San Jose dealership.

The thing is, Porsche sells cars around the world, and cannot control the quality of your water.

I would suggest you buy a 1 gallon jug of distilled water at your local supermarket. Then you might go to Porsche heaven. You can also use it for the battery.

haha - sounds good. . . thanks a lot Tool Pants (while drinking a non-boiled glass of NYC Water!)
