  1. The intensity will decrease over time somewhat - but mainly due to spectral drift of the light outbut towards the shorter wavelengths (Towards the blue/purple end which to the human eye looks less intense).

    The number of cold and hot starts the lamps are made to cycle through affects the lamps ageing more than anything else.

    Can you replace the lamps? is this a RTFM I have a 01 996 with litronics.

  2. One thing that I noticed is that when I switch to AUX and press the tone button, there is no option for stereo. Is this normal?

    Where did you Purchase your ground loop isolator? .... and, is it an inline RCA ground loop or mini jack isolator?

    There are ways around ground loop besides using an isolator...

    I actually had it professionally installed. I am not sure what type of ground loop isolator it is.

    Radio shack, believe it or not, makes a good inline RCA isolator. The other option is to hard ground the radio to the car, this can be accomplished with speaker cable running from a screw on the cars chassis to a screw on the Sattelite radio device. This will definitely eliminate all "hums" which are often caused by interference feeding into the line. IF you had it professionally installed, i would take it back... there should be little to no degredation in the sound.

  3. You could run the cable down the center console and out through the ash tray. See my DIY for details.

    Or you could drill a hole in one of the front console storage bins and drop the mini phone plug down through there. That way you can store the ipod in the bin.

    The bins are held in with tabs and pull right out.

    That may be the easiest... a little hole in a replacable bin would be hardly noticeable...and it is real easy to do ...

  4. Note: I have searched past threads.

    On a 2001 996C2, ordered the Becker Aux cable, just not sure where the best place to run the miniplug cable is. I was thinking in the footwell of the passenger side, like over the carpet on the center console ?

    Any suggestions? Is that piece of carpet removable? (does anyone have pictures)? I will NOT be running power, just a simple miniplug aux in... I want to keep the car as stock as possible.

    Porsche Recalls Selected 911 Carrera S and Carrera 4S Models for Exhaust Pipe Tip Replacement

    ATLANTA, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche today announced a recall of certain Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S sports cars for potentially defective exhaust pipe tips. The recall involves those cars built between April 20, 2004, and October 21, 2005, 5,385 of which were sold in the United States and Canada.

    On these cars, it has been discovered that the exhaust pipe tips fitted to the tailpipes might have inadequate welding seams between the fastening clamp and the tailpipe itself. Should these welding seams fail, the tips can vibrate lose from the tailpipe and fall off. To date, approximately 30 instances of this occurrence have been reported worldwide.

    Owners of these potentially affected 911s will be informed shortly to take their cars to an authorized Porsche dealer where new exhaust tips with improved welding seams will be installed at no charge.

  6. Resolution:

    Took the car to Rennwerke in Elmsford, NY and we looked at it together. Problem was easily tracked to Part #12 above. It seems the "spoiler transmission" that lifts the spoiler is shot... The piece I am referring to is the quarter-circle PVC pipe looking mechanism, on the right side near the spoiler motor.

    The mechanic said you cannot open it because there are springs inside, really have to replace. In addition I think the spoilers days of lifting are numbered, because if the decklid is raised and the spoiler extended via the manual switch, the spoiler had trouble extending... in fact was lopsided when it came out.

    In the end, I will have part 12 replaced. The dealer was right all along. Hope this helps people out... I don't think I am the only one who will have this issue.

    Will do.. Have been looking at some other 911s and noticed not all of them are fully recessed, some are slightly raised on one side, across, etc... I am only talking about 1/4"to 1/2", barely noticeable.

    I am taking it to rennwerke in ny this weekend, and I bought another decklid with spoiler, etc. . .for $100! So much for an $1100 repair!

    Thanks Loren... Called sunset, price is $855 shipped, so not bad but not great. Unfortunately it seems the drive mechanism part comes all together. Maybe an independent can actually fix it without replacing the whole thing, but I have a suspicion it is the transmission part of mechanism... not the motor.

  9. Hello: On a 2001 996C2, i noticed the spoiler was not fully recessed when it closes, sticks up ~0.5 inch on the right side, left side is fine. All operation is fine.

    The dealer said that it was due to a defective spoiler drive (motor?) and it is purely asthetic, will cost ~1100 to fix. But the part is $993!

    Has anyone ever had this problem... is this something a novice DIYer can do? Really find $1100 for a fix a bit excessive. Also would you go used for this part or Suncoast (anyone know the part#)?

  10. Your transmission sounds like it is fried, as well as the clutch. But if the service tech can't reproduce the problem, then ask him to accompany you while you drive the car around and point it out to him when it occurs. Perhaps you are just shifting incorrectly (I know, even if it's highly unlikely) and he could point out to you what you are doing wrong.

    As an aside, you can always try another dealer. I can't imagine that Beverly Hills is going to have the most patient people. Here in New York, I drive the car 30 miles out of the city for service.

    Have the dealer or independent check the hydraulic slave cylinder for the clutch. I had this issue on another car, what happens is the hydraulic fluid (when the car is cold) is not as high as it should be, so the catch point on the clutch is very low (hence the violent jerking). Of course, after the car warmed up (and there was pressure in the system) it was fine. Being in beverly hills, I would gamble you realize it more when the temperature is real cold?

  11. Hello: On a 2001 996C2 with litronics, I have noticed that my left front parking light (below the headlight) does not come on (figured the bulb blew). However just the other day it was on. Originally thought it was the bulb, but why would it come on again. Anyone ever see this problem?

    I have not yet replaced the bulb... my thoughts are faulty bulb connection? or is the bulb dying?

    It seems like something silly, all other lights in the cluster illuminate.

  12. Thinking I may need to top off my oil but wanted to check first on how to do it. Is it as simple as unscrewing the Oil Filler cap and pouring it in? Or do I insert a funnel and pour it down? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Also if dipstick reads max on a hot engine, but electronic indicator reads in the middle (+/- 2 bars), do I let it be? This is on a 01 996C2.

  13. FWIW. This is all on a 2001 996C2. When I got my first CEL (p1128) it was due to the rubber housing around the air filter not being seated correctly... hence a "Massive air leak" was occurring. Dealer fixed.

    After fixing the rubber housing, the car worked great until a few weeks later when the CEL came on again... another trip to the dealer and was due to oil cap not being tight, so tightened it. This never sat right with me

    When the CEL came on a third time, took it to the dealer and diagnosed as a MAF... replaced and have not had a reoccurrence with ~3000 miles (knock wood), my gas mileage and idle are also improved. When I asked the dealer why didn't he detect the MAF in the first place, he said it was due to the air leak bringing in dust/pollen/etc and getting in the MAF.

    Nonetheless, I have found on that CELs have a nasty tendency to come on usually after a service(mine came on ~ 500 miles after 45K service). Which leads me to believe it may be due to dust, contamination when they change the filter.

  14. Front and rear should be fine with no spacers at all.

    If you want to put spacers on the hubs to push the wheels out a little further, then the max thickness spacer on all wheel hubs fitted with with 52/65mm offset  18" wheels is 5mm (the assumption is that your Turbo front wheels are 8" wide, and the rears are 10" wide)

    Try them on the car without spacers - see if you like the look. If not, you only have 5mm to play with on each wheel. If you do get the 5mm spacers fitted, you will need the Porsche 5mm longer wheel bolts.

    Is tire rub, clearance going to be an issue if I do not change anything?? Thanks for your help btw, it is much appreciated!

    I currently have a 2001 996 C2 with 17" Carrera Wheels, (996 362 124 00 and 996 362 128 00) with 55mm spacers front and back, completely stock.

    I recently purchased 18" Turbo I Wheels (993 362 136 00, 993 362 140 01), which have offsets of 52mm and 65mm. My question is, what spacers will I need to install these wheels? In addition, do I need to do anything to the front wheel offset?
