  1. Anyone have any suggestions for front license plate holder? I've heard of the kind that insert into the front tow piece--any known problems with this and are there brands you can recommend? How about US millworks? I've gotten pulled over 4 times for not having a front license plate! 1 ticket :(
  2. Great, thanks for very helpful response. I saw a DIY for the air filter so will have my local guy look at that too. The local guy isn't too experienced with Porsches but an expert with BMWs. He said it would cost around $400 and I'm hoping that between the two of us we can figure it out!
  3. I bought my 2007 C4S 997 as a CPO almost two years ago (at 16,100 miles) . The time for 'scheduled maintenance needed' is ticking down and I've determined from the dealer that it has had two 'minor' maintenances but never a 'major' maintenance done. I changed the oil 6 months ago and checked the brakes which are fine. Car now has 24,500 miles on it. How necessary is it to bring my car into the dealer for the 'major' maintenance? Can I just have my local indy shop do some of them? Researching the scheduled maintenance book and online, it seems that what I need for major maintenance is: changing brake fluid replacing air filter replacing particle filter cleaning out radiator ducts changing spark plugs The indy dealer said the spark plug replacement is not necessary at 24,500 miles. Is this true? What about drive belt or anything else? Unfortunately, my nearest dealer is over an hour away and they did not do a very good job with some minor warranty work that was needed. I've heard they will charge about $1500 for the major maintenance but my local guy will be a lot cheaper. On the other hand, I don't want to damage my car if the above items seem a little to much for a local, non-Porsche maintenance guy to do... Any thoughts? general maintenance intervals.pdf
  4. Thanks for all these useful responses. Well the mechanic I would use does a lot of BMWs and they do Porsches occasionally. I'm not aware of any indy Porsche mechanics nearby and the dealer is 1 hour away (and not very good). The local guy said they use Northwind 5W-40 oil but that mixing with my Mobil 0W-40 to top off occasionally is not a problem. My case of Mobil 0W-40 is about 1 year old and has been sitting in cardboard box but the bottom hasn't been eaten through with moisture despite sitting in my garage all year. Why are there so many different opinions on oils types, brands, etc.? Seems hard to get a consensus. This suggests to me that there is no perfect oil. I've been reading a lot about oils on various forums and the possibility of IMS failure but sounds like they are more common with the M96 than the M97 engine? Nevertheless it seems like the LN engineering magnetic drain plug is cheap, easy insurance.
  5. I've driven 7K since I bought my 2007 C4S 1.5 years ago and have decided to change my oil/filter prior to the Porsche recommended 15K because of what I've read on this forum. I've read thru the DIY oil change forums but thinking about going thru a dealer since I no experience doing it myself. Few questions: 1) What is the approximate price I would expect to pay a non-dealer for an oil change? 2) I have a case of Mobil 0W-40 but a local guy said he uses his own oil. If he also uses 0W-40 from a different manufacturer or even 5W-40, is it possible to mix; like if I have to add oil can I use the Mobil oil? 3) Do I need to change my oil filter and if so is there a special brand I should consider? 4) Should I have them install a magnetic drain plug and if so how difficult is this (i.e. should I need to pay extra)? 5) Does anyone know any reputable non-dealers near Iowa City for an oil change? What would be the best way to find this out? PCA? Any other questions I should ask the oil change guy that I can't think of?
  6. Many thanks for the helpful responses, I'm gonna hit up Costco and order the Super Sports today. fyi they have a $70 rebate on purchase of all 4 michelin tires that expires this weekend!
  7. Also, Costco has an 'XL' designation for the Super Sport with 2007 C4S--does this mean anything?
  8. Time to replace my OEM summer tires (2007 C4S, got 32,300 miles out of them)--any recs for what to replace with? I'm trying to choose between Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 or Super Sport. The Super Sports have better ratings on tirerack but the PS2s are OEM. The Super sports are about $500 less than the PS2s for all four tires. They are both Y rated with similar load capacity. Anyone try the super sports? I've never been to the track but wouldn't rule this out in the future
  9. Yikes, does this mean that they will all be sized exactly the same? Any problems foreseeable with a 0.5 cm gap? Or is it worth returning and getting a OEM Moll battery?
  10. I installed the Wal-mart Everstart Maxx-H7 (the one that's supposed to fit 94R as suggested in previous post in thread 'battery dead') this weekend but found that the mount doesn't quite touch the battery, thus there's a 0.5 cm gap from side-to-side. The battery does slide despite its weight. Do I need to insert something to fill in the gap? The wal-mart dude placed some circular rubber washers on both sides of the battery to help secure it but it hardly seems like a good long-term fix. Does anyone have a different solution for this? Perhaps a new bracket mount? Maybe it doesn't matter but just want to check
  11. I already have the battery tender plus from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-021-0128-Plus-Charger/dp/B00068XCQU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350844571&sr=8-1&keywords=battery+tender+plus Any advantage of the CTEK over battery tender? One drawback (potentially) of the battery tender is that it requires charging using the alligator clips directly to battery. Does the CTEK get around this?
  12. I bought my 2007 C4S as a CPO from a dealer a year and a half ago. My battery died this weekend (had used it for about 2 weeks and didn't think to use my battery tender plus) but when I tried to replace it found this aftermarket battery charger attached to my car's battery. Dealer didn't mention this to me when I bought it at ~16,000 miles (now has ~32,000). Just for fun I tried plugging it in to a wall outlet but the red charging light didn't turn on. Having this piece of hardware there made unscrewing the secure housing/mount a bit tricky but I swapped the old for a new battery and the car is back to full function. Didn't re-install the charger. Question: anyone have any experience with this Solar 1.5 amp battery charger? Would it be worth trying to install again or is it junk since the light didn't turn on anyway when I tested it? Notably, the red + cable was attached ot the battery but the black was secured to the vehicle (i.e. grounded), not the - charge. Shouldn't the dealer have found this and mentioned it to me?
  13. Well I finally received and installed the 18" Michelin Alpin PA2s. So far very happy with them this cold weekend in eastern Iowa. There was about 1-2 inches of snow on the ground (with much more around from a storm a week ago) and about 14 degrees F when I drove my car to the tire shop--this was one of the scariest driving experiences I've ever had. Obviously, my car had the summer tires on (19" Michelin Pilot Sports) but it was gliding around even on a straightaway going < 25 mph. I put my hazards on because it was nearly uncontrollable, fortunately only for a mile to the shop. Once they were on, it was like night and day. I had great grip of the road and could turn, start, and stop (and drive straight) with full confidence. Excited to finally have it back, I even took it around some empty side streets where there was still 4-6" inches of snow and developed a good feel for how it handles on these kinds of conditions. Despite AWD/4WD, you can definitely sense the power coming from the rear as I felt a little oversteer that was pretty easily correctable. The TPC/TPMS took a good 10 minutes or so to get adjusted to the new wheels (I had TPMS installed in all 4) but the computer found all four wheels automatically without needing to go to the dealer (but I'm not sure if the tire installer fed the serial numbers into the car before I drove it off). Did change the settings to winter tyres instead of summer in the TPC. Can't explain in words how great it is to have the 997 back in action! OZ had their wheel caps on so I removed then measured them and ordered some black Porsche colored wheel caps from ebay that should arrive this week. Nevertheless, here are the before and after pics as promised!
  14. I just bought the Michelins PA2s from tirerack (with 18" OZ Alleggrettas in black with TPMS sensors) and learned they are directional tires. Apparently you can get an extra season out of them by re-mounting the tire on the opposite wheel once per season (can not just swap the rears or the fronts because then they'll be running backwards). Also learned that 45 degrees is the general temperature at which to change to summer tires, so for me in Iowa Thanksgiving and Easter will be around the times I'll change. I'm excited to finally get my car back this winter!!!
  15. well put... exactly why I'm doing this! I couldn't find those Pirellis in 265 anymore. I've emailed one of the tirerack consultants Damon who posts a lot on 6speedonline to ask if I'm missing something
  16. Also what is the difference between 'front 18x8' versus 'front 18x8.5?'
  17. Thanks for the response! I've been looking at tirerack.com and the only option for 18" they give me are Michelin Alpin PA2. How do I know if I need wheel spacers or does tirerack figure this out automatically? Also, I'm thinking of getting matte black color for the rims. Any suggestions on where to get black Porsche center wheel caps?
  18. I bought a CPO 2007 997 C4S coupe (black metallic outside, gray interior) in June 2011 but winterized it a few weeks ago because I don't want it damaged in the winter. However, I've been going thru some serious withdrawals and now contemplating buying a set of winter tires and rims. Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of rims and tires would be good for my car? Any issues I should be aware of? I see that there are bolts and spacers sometimes needed for some wheels... how do I know if I need this? Is self-installation recommended? Was looking at sites like tirerack.com, wheeldynamics.com, and a few others. Any suggestions on website? Thanks for any thoughts and happy holidays. Elliott
