sorry to hear your story.
regarding your options:
$7500 give you any warranty? at least one month/1000 miles. wish u had taking some videos so we could have first hand exp. with this
failure.
-
does this car has something u really want?
the price is not that good, condition is not that good, history is not that good. and it's a long distance. i would pass.
there are so many 996s out there.
-
u know if u can post some pic. of that $1200 piece. would be really helpful
-
are u a PCA member? please go to http://www.pca.org/regions/

can you please post a video/audio of your start-up noise? your car drive fine other wise, right? this is too crazy.
-
man, this is crazy!!!!!
start up noise -> $11K eng. replacement!!!!!!
please go see other dealer/indy, let us know the out come. i have a 01 996, and i have some start up noise too.
-
1. good thing.
2. break it in nicely!

interesting problem.
so in theory, one can change to a "slower" speed sensor so the milage build up slowly. :)
-
thanks
u are the man!

How easy is it to clean the idle control valve? Any pics?Isn't your car a MY2000?
Your car is an egas car and does not have an Idle Control Valve.
If you are having simple idle problems then you need to clean the throttle butterfly. They can get carbon'ed up and cause similar lumpy idle or idle hunting.
any pic for throttle butterfly?
and how to clean it?

air oil sperator failed.
search for "sperator" you should find enough info.
not a bad fix.

i am no expert. this is what i think:
the problem is the boot cover. i checked mine this monring, it seems there are some arms to pull the cover back once the roof is completely folded. i think you should try:
1. visually inspect to see if there are anything in the way.
2. open the top, see if the cover can go back to its org. position when roof is up, if yes, maybe it's the sensor problem the cover can't "feel" the roof is closed already.
again, i am no expert, just guessing.

you think Armorall is "oily"?
i used Armorall on my streeing wheel of my other car. i hate the oily feel so much.
-
do u put any protection/coating after cleaning your vinyl?
i have black int. i can tell you how dirty it is. the dust stuck between the fine gap of the vinyl, so hard to clean.
-
which year? milage?
-
Hot at idle is around 2 - 3 bar - anything above that in the rev range is around 5 bar.........
Stone cold it goes straight to 5 bar at idle.
do u see any diff. when out side temp. changes?
ie. winter vs summer, assuming you fill u car with 15W50 for both winter and summer.
thanks again
-
thank you.
tool pant, in general, high oil pressure is good thing or bad thing?
-
We live in Chicago - and the car only gets driven from March through November.
We do about 3000 miles a year - so I change the oil in the fall before it gets stored, and I change it again at the beginning of summer - so two oil changes a year.
This is excessive - but I don't care. It is very cheap insurance.
can you provide your oil pressure readings:
1. car warming up.
2. warmed up idling.
3. warmed up 2K RPM
4. warmed up 3K RPM
5. warmed up 4K RPM
6. warmed up 5K RPM
thank you very much.
