just some updates.
got my car back last week.
1. cel, P0446,
the valve is bad, replaced, and relaced some vent line too.
part: $277, labor: 282
cel stays off after 700 miles. :-)
2. clunk noise in driver-side front when moving slowly.
bad seal in control arm, had to replaced the whole thing/
part: $300, labor: $153
the car handles better, as the front feels much tighter than before. still not as good as some of the 996/997 i drove before.
so $1000 later, i truely enjoy the car now!

i had creakin noise in my front, turned to be bad control arm. costed me about $500 (part + labor) to fix.

x5rap,
can you share your exp. with your warranty company?
i have a MY01 996 and looking for a warranty company.
thanks
I just had a new engine installed in my '99 tip coupe (Feb-98 build date). The new engine, bought in SoCal in Feb-06, cost just short of $7,800US. The engine was assembled by Porsche in Sep-05. Installation was additional of course. I got lucky with an extended warranty covering the cost of all of it, except a $200 deductible and incidentals. Plus I upgraded to FabSpeed Mufflers. Now I have a 3-year and 36K-mile factory warranty on a new M96 engine. Lucky me!! :jump:There is a problem with early cases going porrous. Not all of them went bad obviously but based upon what I have read, a lot have failed. The guy at the extended warranty company knew all about the problem and he knew all the part numbers by heart. The original engine in my car ended up with oil and water intermixing. That was what caused the replacement of my engine. Bearings and rings really don't like coolant where they're expecting oil: stuck valves, ring failure, bearing failure... There was no catastrophic failure in my old engine but Warrantech, the extended warranty insurance company, decided they'd be chasing the problem if they didn't replace the whole unit.
I have read a number of posters stating they've enjoyed 110K miles or more with no trouble, so it's not a certainty that buying a used engine is a bad idea, but the failure of the early M96 engines is by no means a rarity.
My two cents, if you can afford it, I suggest that you buy a new one.

norton-sp, i read some posts here saying 0W40 is not good enough cause 40 is too low, so 5W50 provides better protection?
1999Porsche911, i am sure you can jump in and give your thoughts.
well, at least, you can drive that fast in autobahn ...
-
what grade of engine oil using?
0W40? or 5W50?
any indication before the engine went south, like noise, smoke, oil comsuption?
get a new engine and drive even harder! :)

I have been playing with the tire air pressure and driving without the psm on. The car really drives or should I say the steering is much tighter at 130+ without the PSM engaged.
Air Pressure is probably the reason for the steering response feeling better. PSM has nothing to do with the steering system.
If you have to ask about tracking a car with PSM on or off, then it is probably best for you to drive on the track with it engaged.
i don't have PSM on my car, oh boy it gets tricky/ugly sometimes.

from my limited engineering class back in college many years ago.
the new design has the "neck" so when coolant spoils out, it will drop back to the coolant reserver along the edge of the neck, instead of keep on the pad, finding it's way out from the coolant reservior.
my old cap did hold pressure tight, but coolant kept seeping out, leaving a bad smell after driving for a hour or 2. after i change to the new design, no more bad coolant smell!
so again, change 00 cap no matter what! cheap part too.
loren, does this make me a "Contributing Member " even though i didn't have to post a pic. cause someone did before? :clapping:
-
Here are the cracks in my Boxster tank.
You have the old cap, so replace it.
If it were me I would replace the suspect tank since it is already out.
TP - what is exactly wrong with the .00 cap? I upgraded to the .01, but am still trying to figure out the differences, they look almost identical... Ross
i will take a pic. of the 00 cap and 01 cap when i got home tonight, very interesting designe change.
-
wow, i would forget about the full-leather mod :)
-
coolant reservior cap.
check to see if the coolant reservior edge has some coolant leaks out.
i had this problem. resolved by a new coolean reservior cap. $16.

in fact, i passed the inspection about a front&rear brake job.
and i don't feel the strong "pushing to front" thing when braking hard any more. i guess, the inspection makes sense, to some degree.
but the P0446 came back last night. will have to make another trip to the shop now. :(

It should not hurt the car. If the CEL resets itself then the problem has been corrected and everything is meeting specs.
well, i reset them, and hoping for the best!
i used to have bad dream about exam, even though last time i went to classroom was more than 10 years, i might start have dreams about cel now. :D
-
Both of those codes have at least one potential cause as EVAP canister.
You should never fill the car with it running - it will give a CEL every time. If the gas cap is loose or leaking it will give a CEL. Thank the EPA for that one. If you reseat the gas cap the CEL will clear itself in 2-3 days of normal driving.
but did it once won't cause any physical damage to the car, right?
just hard to admit i damage my baby before even take it home :(
i didn't shut off engine cause the car was sitting for 2 weeks before i pick it up, was worrying about the battery.
-
then again,
bad coolant smell came out, looked at my cap, 996.106.447.00
sure enough, time for a new updated cap. :)
-
As long as the light is not flashing it is okay to drive the car. If the light is flashing that means that you will damage the cats ($$) if you continue to drive.
i bot a small reader ($75) from autozone today, and put it into my grove box, ready to read code any time!
-
P1130 Oxygen Sensing Adaptation, Idle Range, Bank 2 – Below Limit
Fuel/air mixture is so rich that sensing is up to its lean threshold.
potential causes:
– Incorrect signal from MAF sensor
– Fuel pressure too high
– Fuel injector leaking
– EVAP canister purge valve open
thx, loren, and i assume it's ok to drive the car as normal for a few days after i clear the code, right?
-
i pulled the new code today:
P1130 Oxygen sensing adaptation, idle range, bank 2
taking the first error code into considirition, i might have a vacume leak some where. will drive the car next week. if it happens, will take the car to the indy who did my brake.
-
Could be... if so it should reset itself in the next couple of (driving) days.
thanks,
i will go to autozone to reset it one more time, and hope it won't come back! :)
-
took to a porsche indy last week.
changed front and rear pads.
bal. 4 wheels.
the car feels much better. the brake has some noise when going slow in traffic, guess it's normal.
but, on my way home, the CEL went on, need to take the car back to the tech.
my cel went on before, and i resetted it in autozone,
P0446 EVAP Canister Shutoff Valve (Function) - Below Lower Limit
i throught it might related to me not shut-off engine when refilling gas.
any thoughts on this CEL?

eastriver, did you try the radio programing yet and if so did it work? I am out of town till next Tuesday so I've not tried it yet.
Thanks,
it works. as said.
1. search for the channle you want to set.
2. press the small key, the org. setting station will come on for a few second.(VERY bad design), don't release the button, after a few seconds, you will hear a beep. station is set.
-
According to Becker tec support their directions are right in that after selecting a radio station one must hold the particular program button in, and hold it in even if/when in doing so the station still reverts to the original setting the next few secs.
Wouldn't it be more intuitive if it didn't return to the undesired "old" station before the new station is stored? Just like all other radios I've used so far? User friendliness comes to mind, and standardization, but what do I know!
i too had the same question. gotta try it tomorrow.
guess porsche trying to be different??
-
I would flush the brake fluid and then bleed the clutch and brakes.
thx loren, that seems to be where the money's at.
i will do it tomorrow and let you know the result.
BTW, do you still have 2001 996 C2 order guide and owner manul pdf? :D
-
sorry to mention:
2001 996 cab. tip US-spec.
40K miles.
Try bleeding the brake system.
someone in other place suggested the samething.
i go down to check the fluid now. will do it first thing Sat.
thanks
