  1. They pulled the voltage readings from the MAF even when open throttle,it would barely top 2 volt....they sprayed it with cleaner....2.5volts full throttle. It should be near 5 volts full throttle...MAF is bad.

They said the values though for each side were the same.

  2. As I stated in my original thread I am interested in doing the following as preventive maintenance:

    • Replace AOS
    • Replace oil filler tube
    • Clean Throttle Body

I can also bring additional tools/parts for other projects (i.e. motive bleeder) if others need them.

Thanks Loren for setting this up.

    Renaud.

Replacing the AOS isn't hard and anyone could help you with it(if I can make it I will help you).

F.Y.I. the bellow part of the AOS is a spring clamp. I'd suggest ordering some high grade screw type clamps. I've been told by several shops that the OEM metal clamp ones don't hold their strength when removed. It makes it super easy to install the new AOS.

  3. Hello All,

I would be interested in doing some preventive maintenance on my car (AOS + oil filler tube).

I am sure I could use a few pointers on how to successfully tackle those jobs.

It might be too much but I also have an alternative project if anybody is interested. Replacing the top with a new glass window one. We could fully document the procedure for others or have a few participants run that project in parallel on multiple cars.

Sacramento is not that close for me but I really enjoyed meeting the team last time.

    Thanks !!!!

    Renaud.

The AOS is a quick 1-3 hour job on a Boxster and I'd be more then willing to help you out with it. I've done one once already,no biggie.

    Now if it's a 996........

  4. So how do all the hardcores in and around LA with the billion dollar toys heavily modified get away with it?

    Simple they pay people off.

In Sacramento my friend gets away with it by, knowing someone at the DMV($300) or paying the shop twice as much and they pass it.

I've been warned about my Top Speed muffler........I'm wondering what would happen if I install the Fabspeed 2nd cat bypass pipes if shop would even know.

  5. I'd like to thank the Borden's for hosting the event and their willingness to work with my mistake. Your air gun is awesome!

Kirk THANK YOU! I really appreciate your help. There is no way possible I could have done that without you. It was nice to meet you and Alex.

Loren thanks for testing the car out for me. Nice to finally put a face with a member who has been helping me out and giving me advice for awhile.

I was also nice to see some other familiar faces I've met in the past.

These are the types of events that give people confidence to work on their cars......unless you forget to torque lug bolts :D. If you ever want to learn about your car or see some neat cars just head out to a Work On Card Day!

  6. Hello, so this is the problem I am facing now. I have a boxster 98 2.5 tip that I upgraded to “1999” 996 3.4L. I am using boxster harness modified the harness by adding ground to pin 58. It seems to me the car is running rich. You can smell it from the exhaust; also the car loses gas real fast. When car is running and I step on the gas black smoke comes out of the exhaust. The car runs strong and doesn’t seem to lose any power; the only noticeable thing is the black smoke and of course losing lots of gas. I hooked the computer to both PS2 and OBDII and these are the codes I found:

    PS2: P0157, P0300, P0301, P0304, P0137, P0131, P0151

    OBDII: P0157, P0300, P0301, P0304, P0137, P0151, P0131, P1115, P1119, P1319, P1313, P1316.

At this point I am not sure what’s causing the engine to run rich... ECU, O2 sensor? Help please

    Thanks

    Ali

    OK. Finally problem solved:

    1) I had 3 bad O2 sensors, and I know why. Well actually I got 3 after market O2 sensors "$18 each- I was curious". I cut the old sensors connectors and reconnected the wires from new sensors to old connectors. Now I am not sure if the sensors are not good for boxster’s application, or if I made a mistake and miss-wired. As a solution I got 3 new O2 sensors and that resolved the issue. "I shall get the after market O2 sensors try and re-wire them see if I can make them work". Car did not run rich any more, no smelly exhaust or black smoke.

    2) The second part of the problems was caused by a leak in the cold Air intake hose connecting air throttle body to air intake cone. All the after market hoses I purchased "as much as $375" did not work and kept leaking air. I think they did not work because they were designed to fit a car with e-gas air throttle “which points opposite direction from none e-gas. At the end I got 3" aluminum pipe + 2 x 90 degree silicone hoses + 2 straight silicone hoses and D-clamps. Customizing cold air intake hose is the way to go. Looks nice, fits perfect. No more Air leaks and no more CE warning!!

"p.s i shall add pics later in my '2.5tip to 3.4 conversion' post"

A serious thank you to Loren and Todd, you guys rock

    Thanks again

    Ali

    :renntech:

Do you mind posting the info on the generic o2 sensors that you used? Where did you buy them? Did you do any special type of connection from the old wires - new?

  7. blinkwatt, definitely bring your new springs! We'll get those swapped out. You don't really need a lift to do that job, although it's nice. You just need the wheels off the ground and jack stands will work fine for that and it sounds like we've got plenty of space to get your car up on jack stands. I'd just plan on coming early for that job though. Do you have a jack and jack stands or do you want me to bring some? Also do you want me to bring my spring compressors?

    Kirk

    Loren,

Is it o.k. if Kirk and I swap out springs if we use jacks and jack stands?

    -

    Kirk,

I don't mind coming early at all. I have 2 jacks and 2 jack stands. I can bring those. If you would bring your spring compressor that would be AWESOME. I don't have too many tools either so if there is anything special that you used when swapping yours out could you bring those as well?

  8. Robert,

    MY is Model Year.

I don't know that we can do a suspension change at a work on cars days. They can take 4-5 hours and I don't think it would be fair to other folks there to monopolize the lift for that long.

No problemo Loren. I was thinking it was a big D.I.Y. for a group day but it was worth a shot. I guess I'll have to try tackling it with another forum member at another date.

If I can think of any other work to be done,I'll post.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  9. Loren is working on coming up with a specific date for this event, so it would be helpful if others who have a particular project they'd like to work on.....post the MY of the car and the task you'd like to perform. This will help Loren set up a schedule. There will be a number of "experts" there to oversee the work and give a hand to those who haven't tackled a Porsche related job on their own.

I don't know what 'MY' means but I think it has something to do with the build of the car?!

    I have a 01' Boxster S,6-spd. All OEM suspension wise and I'm looking to install H & R springs.

    Loren,

Should I order the ball joint separator featured here and pick up a spring compressor for the event?

    Thanks,

    Robert

  10. Hey Chuck,

I don't know if you remember me but I recommended you to Jimmy at Mobile Porsche Works to work on your Slantnose awhile back. This could be a great chance you meet you.

I know mfltech(might be slightly different),the dude you sold you old 996 to,might up for attending. I'm sure there are plenty others who would want to join in. This section on Renntech is just kinda hidden,I wouldn't even know about it Loren didn't PM me it awhile back. Should we post about this on rennlist as well?

    Take care,

    Robert

  11. Let me set something straight;

-halogen assembly w/ Xenon conversion is nice and bright, but the light projected isn't perfectly laid out

-Litronics look cool and are nice, not as much light output as a conversion but the light stays where it should be.

I have a Xenon conversion on my 01' 986 S and Litronics on my 01' 996 c2. Conversion are amazing for the price but I'd get real Litronics if you can afford it.

  12. Yes, it is. The only reason I know is because I just broke mine yesterday. Be extremely careful.

    How did you break it?

I'd recommend going to the dealer and getting a spare "just in case" because breakage often happens with this plug. I can't believe, in all honesty, that so many other things are done right, but your car can be crippled because some moron wanted to save 12 cents on a plug by making it out of plastic rather than steel...

Yeah tell me about it......my radiator is leaking on the driver side where the coolant line connects to the plastic inlet(outlet?). What crap,my Nissan Quest has a fully metal radiator.

Pic from above my center radiator.

    PICT1127.jpg

    Pic from below.

    PICT1131.jpg

Be aware: I had a hell of a time getting one from my local Porsche dealer...he kept insisting that wasn't from a Boxster radator, but from a 944.

Funny you mention that. I talked to Jeff @ Sunset and he said the 944s radiator had a blue plug that sounds like what I described to him off of my 986.

Do you happen to have the part no. for the drain plug? Does it have that little metal part attached to it or is that a seperate part no.?
