  1. I have a 997.2 S with PDK. When I apply the brakes on rough road surface there is a continuous noise emanating from above the driver's legs, between the brake pedal and the steering wheel. The noise is more pronounced the rougher the asphalt and it sounds like a spring being released or similar.

I am taking the car to be checked but because there could many things that potentially create the noise, I am wondering if any of you have had something similar.

I suppose this could have equally happened on any 997.1, so your views will be much appreciated.

  2. First a truck. Now a sedan. Next it will be a tractor....

    Come on free your minds!

IMO it is not what Porsche make but how good their products are.

The Cayenne is the Porsche among SUVs and the Panam. will be the Porsche among sedans.

The tractor will be the Porsche among tractors; in some places they hold tractor races so it could be the Porsche Tractor Supercup.

You must have heard that in spring 09 the new Cayenne diesel will be released so we could have an RS Spyder Diesel in time for Le Mans.

    Exciting things ahead!

  3. It involves extensive work including changing the cylinder heads, camshafts etc. It is not an ECU and filter thing, I wouldn't like this type of jobs to be done on a retrofit basis. I'de rather wait and get it factory fitted.

I agree with you, but it is another option. Plus, I never suggested it was "just an ECU (proper term is DME) and filter thing".

    The dealership does the following:

    carbon fibre air filter housing

revised, race tuned camshaft & cylinder heads

    different exhaust manifold

    Sport exhaust

    Factory warranty

    381 HP

    306 lb/ft torque

    4.4 0-60

    $18,699

    Thank you for the information!

  4. I know dealerships in the Chicago area can add the X51 powerkit on the 997 after delivery. They say it is the same as factory, same power, same warranty...for about $5,000 less.

  5. Well, let's start by moving this thread to the Cayman forum (rather than 997).

P23 is an order guide option number rather than the Porsche option code on the car. Likely the option code on the car's option sticker is I610

    P23 = PCM 2.1 w/Extended Navigation

Allows navigation on unmapped roads via GPS and compass.

Thank you! Sorry for the misplaced thread!

  6. Well its normal for the shifting to be notchy and alittle tough when the gear oil in the tranny is cold and at its thickest form with cold. However, Not being able to engage reverse isnt too common. I have a question for you... Are you using any thicker gear oil in your transmission like RedLine or something similar? If so that could be the problem right there because thicker gear oil seem to make shifting when cold more laborious than the Porsche Recommended oils would.

I use the Porsche gearbox oil.

Reverse does engage when cold, the problem is that when I disengage, if I don't take extra care to do a slow accurate movement the whole system blocks , like I mentioned above.

  7. I have a Porsche short shift (actually it is not even the very extreme one as mine comes from the 550 anniversary model) on my 986S that presents the following problem when cold. The movement obviously is generally stiff when the system is cold like all SS systems, but if I select reverse when I go back to neutral if I am not very careful with the movement of going from reverse to neutral, the system becomes somehow blocked in the neutral position and I cannot engage any gear as if the stick is locked. I then have to shake the stick with short movements in all directions until it unblocks. When warm no problems are encountered. What I mean is that when I disengage reverse I have to do the movement very slowly and precisely and not instictively like it is the norm in all cars,in order to avoid this nuisance.

What is your opinion? The wires are ok and the clips at the back are well secured. Could it be something inside the gearbox and if yes why only when cold.

Your assistance will be appreciated. Thanks!

  8. Sometimes, the fuel gauge reading on my 2001 Boxster S registers below Full although the tank is brimmed. The pointer goes up to 3/4 of the last 1/4 i.e. little below full. From then on as the tank is depleted the readings are correct. Any ideas please. Somebody suggested OBD calibration, others that the floater in the tank might be faulty.

    Thanks

  9. Is it possible, that the durametric software is not able to read out the Actual Values from a 997TT? In the 7.8.1 Menu there is no point for Actual Values and in 7.8 menue the program chrashes after reading out.

    Any other experiences?

Actual values for the 2007 997 Turbo DME is in the list of projects that Durametric are either working on or planning adding to the software, according to their website. Look under "workbook".

  10. Sorry, seems my original post was not very clear. The cables on my car are fine, both are still clipped firmly in place. If you look a the metal rod (linkage) in the center of the photo you will see there is a cylinder on one end. That cylinder should be fit onto the metal ball joint you can see in the photo. Because the rubber/plastic material in the cylindrical end of the linkage has failed the linkage will no longer stay in place

The "cylinder"is an integral part of the cable. No separate part # is given. However, there are two retaining clips for the cable, part # 986 424 411 00. Make sure that one or both are not missing/broken before you embark on something more complex/expensive.

The cable on my car jumped out because the clips were not in place and I couldn't select all gears. I replaced the clips and fastened them with cable ties for extra support. No problems since then.

  11. I am contemplating the installation of a LSD on my 986 S MY2001.

However, I've had a doubt that the LSD might interfere with the operation of the PSM system fitted to the car. So I am doing some research before proceding further. Today I went through one of Paul Frere's books on Porsche 986/996 where it was stated expressly that PSM is not compatible with LSD. In the case of the 997/997TT I think this doesn't hold true anyway. But it might be a different version of PSM.

Has anyone done this conversion on a 986/996 car with the early PSM system? Is there a compatibility issue? What are your experiences?

    Thank you

  12. My first post here (joined today)

I want to be able to pull over and put the top down from the

driver's seat without damaging the window.

You can only do that when the ambient temp is something like 23+ C and/or when the car sat in the sun for a while. Otherwise you risk getting a bad fold that might not go away. I own the car for almost 6 years now and the plastic window has not yet been "trained"
