  1. Thanks Doug. I'm checking fuel pressure and going to drop the engine.
  2. Well that sounds like a problem and they were not included in my pelican gasket set. The injectors, though too small for the 3.6, do not seem to be leaking at o-rings. I have no gaskets on the head to intake riser. Funny, was running well at start up, then fixed variocam and now rough idle and misfire on cyl 1,2,3 after 15 minutes of running and engine warms up.check fuel pressure first. Will drop engine again ( getting good at this ) replace injectors, orings, and install gaskets !!!! Report back
  3. there were only new gaslets and bolts for the intake, there were no gaskets for the riser between it and the head. Am I missing someting ?? I believe any of the M96/97 injectors are backwards compatible. I think I remember reading the newest ones available on engines up until they switched to DFI will work, however I can't recall my sources. I also remember rt.org member 1999porsche911 who used injectors that were not porsche specified (read HIGH flow), and his car ran fine, although I think he was also running a few pounds of boost. ;) FWIW, I'm running one generation below the latest (they are white colored) and they work perfectly. I think the only difference between those and the 3.8L ones are flow rate. The white ones are the injectors designated for the 3.6L and my TRA are quite steady around 0.97 for both banks. The new design is slightly different than the original. The 996 MK1 clips will not line up to the new style injectors without modification to them. When I installed mine I thought that it was important to retain the clip to "hold them in place", however I later saw an engine where this wasn't done and they were just "floating" for lack of better term (but they were all installed at the same depth). Well they actually would not float if they are seated. What I believe is important is that they are all installed the same way (either all the way down or all the way up, and they are fully seated), dont forget to lube the orings, I used tire sealant IIRC. Mine are all the way 'up' and clipped in as you see in the pic below, and I've seen them installed all the way down with the clip just used as a "spacer" without any modifications. Both engines perform flawlessly. As you can see I dremeled small slots above the existing slots so that they would fit around the injector and the flange on the rail. Edit: and forgot to mention the new injectors don't have those fiddly plastic guides to worry about.
  4. yep. gonna try the new injectors, which from what i am reading are too small, and new o-rings. If I still get misfires then the smoke machine seems the best approcah.
  5. I cleard ecu after the flam gas spray. I sprayed at the base of the intake around the injectors on 1-3 and then 4-6. all bank one misfire and then cyl 4. another reason I think the injectors are not seated. They should should "suck" on the intake side ( read vac leak) and "push" on the fuel rail side. I could also see a portion of the yellow o ring "guide " taht is after the o-ring on cyl one, whic I pushed in and reinstalled the clip. can't get to the others obviousley without dropping engine. Any one have a pic of a properly installed injector and clip? thanks.
  6. yes, everything new, plugs, coils, thanks 987-RDC- can anyone tell me if they will fit my 996 engine. If so, I'd like to try them...after I pull the engine for the third time. Really not worth the time and effort to fish around on your back with the mirror/ mag light approach to install almost anything that is not on the top of the engine. Doesnt work as its just too tight to see in there. Yes, new everyrthing, plugs, coils, etc..EXCEPT injectors and o rings. Also, I am starting to think I don't have the injectors "clipped on" properly or seated as number 1 cyl., which I can see, was not all the way down in the receiving "hole" and I installed all of them the same.
  7. Manuals very helpful. Not sure if plunger is different from bank 1. Did not take bank 1 variocam off. I will replace all injectors o rings and post results
  8. Thanks Doug. My plunger was upside down compared to the one you sent me. Oops. The idle should NOT increase because I sprayed flammable gas on intake. Vac leak seems logical and The o rings are old and installed twice. Can you get the injectors off easily ? Not that I have ,figured out without.....dropping engine for the third time though I'm getting faster : )
  9. I would be surprised if I had vac leak at manifold to head or at intake runners. However, the injectors o rings, With 100k on them , being reused, seem suspect. Now, what's the easy way to pull injectors ? Kind of tight in there and then the clips are impossible!!
  10. I sucked all old fuel out of tank prior to rebuild. Then 3/4 tank new premium and sea foam. Just filled up and techron after new filter but old filter was terrible. Idle pick up with carb cleaner seems very suspect
  11. Not 15 minutes any more. Within 5. Interesting, when I sprayed flammable gas, misfires moved to cylinders ,4,5,6. I am thinking vac leak also.
  12. New premium with techron . Really drinking the fuel. Sprayed carb cleaner around Bank 1 intake while running and rpm picked up. Misfires only bank 1. I am going to retighten the intake manifold. I used old injectors o rings when I rebuilt engine. Problem. ??.
  13. Ok, Doug Harness was kind enough to sell me a used variocam solenoid. In the mean time I pulled the engine and the bank 2 variocam and decided to check the variocam plunger as I had removed it during the rebuild to clean out all of the intermix goo. I HAD PUT THE PLUNGER IN UPDSIDE DOWN !!, concave up so it was stuck "on" at all time AS SOLENOID PIN COULD NOT REACH THE PLUNGER. I now have a spare ; ) Fixed that, rechecked timing and reinstalled engine and the P1539 and P1324 are gone. Ran great for about 15 miles and now CEL and idling terribly. Installed all new coils and checked plugs and now have all bank 1 missfires; P0301 P0302,P0303. I looked engine over very carefully when it was out. No loose intake bolts or hoses, found nothing. Going to check for vacuum leaks again and ???????
  14. OK EVERYONE. My wife solved the major missfire and idle problem. she has dealt with my hobby/sickness for almost 15 years. "start with the basics, she said" "Phillip , did you check the fuel filter ? Well err "of course honey " .....not !!!!!!!!!!! So I install a new filter and all the missfires are gone, and no more hard CEls, runs and idles great, but as you all have deduced, P1324 and P1529 are still present and I am starting to agree, the actuator on bank 2 is probably toast. runs and idles better than it ever did. Pics of filter trash below, pretty sad. I will replace actuator and report back.
  15. Checked ohms on both solenoids. 13.7 on bank 2 and 14.5 on bank 1. Within range. Both banks click when I apply 12 volts. I am starting to suspect bank 2 valve actiator is malfunctioning. Going to replaced. Yes idling like crap.
  16. Additionally , i will ohm my bank 1 and 2 cylinoid. and apply 12 volts and see what happens.
  17. I checked all plugs and coils. the plugs looked a little sooty on bank 1-3 and good and soft brown on 4-6. Unplugged MAF and battery to reset dme. It ran well cold at speed, had trouible idling after warm and then poorly after about 20 minutes and then CEL's; P1324, P1539 ( cam shaft allocation), and MAF code( can't remember code). unplug battery and reset dme, and runs well again for about 20 minutes. I still thank the bank 2 cam sensor and or wire my be at fualt. The mechanical bank 2 timing and cam allocation IS NOToff ! Some thoughts after re-reading many other posts on Renn tech and list: I think my injectors are undersized for the 3.6 liters. The coil heat shields were missiing from the car when I purchased with Intermix. Can this cook my coils and cause missfires ? I did not put adhesive on the lower portions of the aluminum intake manifolds when I assembled and may have an intake leak (Must you do this?) the bank 2 cam sensor wire was broken in two locations; at the plug and in the harness so I soldered all three wires in 2 locations. I am concerned about the signal "delay" and/or the increased resistance going through all of that solder. going to replace with a new plug end and re-attach carefully. Where can I find a 3 prong cam sensor plug? Comments and ideas about the MAF and dme reset results and how it ran as well as my thoughts above are appreciated. thanks, Phillip
