  1. If adding air to your tires is a 1, and overhauling the transmission is a 10, I would say installing the shifter would be a 1.05...sound about right?

did you actually install it? if that is the case, i suggest the OP put air in your tires twice for you so you can do his schnell shifter install.

personally, i found it rather difficult taking a couple trips to kragen for tools. cutting the plastic white clips that held the stock shifter in was a PITA. it requred patience, googles and cutters which sent plastic pieces flying all over the place.

here's a hint, for the ring spanning tool (whatever it is called, 2 gold rings that come with the schnell short shifter) don't use the cheap phillips-screw-on-tips, get the more expensive tool that replaces the arms.

previously, i had trouble getting the car in reverse. the schnell did fix that problem. having the short shifter makes the travel between gears shorter, however it requires more effort and makes shifting slower... i find that shifts grind at high rpms, but maybe that's because the hex screw is not in the right setting.

  2. Today I was in the process of changing out the stock bulbs in the odometer/cluster to the LED lights sold on ebay. It took a few couple of hours trying to get the **** thing to light up. After putting in a few bulbs, a couple wouldn't turn on. I'd reverse that bulb, then the other 2 wouldn't turn on etc. It was PITA trying to get it to work. Then finally when it seemed like I was almost done, I couldn't get one of the bottom three digital gauges to light up. Upon disconnecting the socket, I found a mini light bulb had fell out of the socket and trapped inside the white box and was inaccessible. Therefore I tried to remove the box from the circuit board to free the bulb held on by 4 torx screws... then it was all over, the ribbon cable had ripped off the circuit board.

So is there a way to reattach or solder this back on? Anybody with an extra cluster?

From this experience, I recommend against anybody wanting to modify their cluster with LED lights. I've found for some reason, the LED socket by itself fits into the cluster light bulb hole, but with the LED in the socket the clearance is not enough making installation difficult.

  3. I recently had the stock deck replaced with a Kenwood deck. I've found that Crutchfield said the '86 VW radio harness would fit my 97 Boxster (you will also need the male antenna plug for VW). However during the DIY installation I found the square black harness did not into the factory plugs. There are 2 plugs from my car, one of them would fit but the other plug was wider. Maybe this is due to the factory amplifier (no Bose system) etc... so that required a custom installation from a shop. I called around and it seemed more expensive when I said Porsche. Anyhow, I found the best value and price at Audio Dimension.

If you are in the San Francisco, CA area, I'd recommend:

    Audio Dimension

    5635 Mission St

    San Francisco, CA 94112

    (415) 587-8700

    ask for Dave or Roger.

For a reasonable fee, they can also install the DIN-size cup holders and relocate the heater controls to the bottom DIN by the shifter. The car is more functional with cup holders and is completely worth it at $69 bucks.

  4. Hi All,

There hasn't been a Work on Cars day for a while and I was wondering if anybody wants to gather for one. Ofcourse I will be more than happy to supply the pizza and beer if I can get the **** convertible top fixed. If not, does anybody know of a decent mechanic (besides the dealership) around San Francisco, CA that works on Boxsters? Thanks.
