  1. Thanks guys. I could not understand

    how a stock caymen S could be a fast as

    my 997 S down the straights. I was

    told that the car was getting a better launch

    out of 14 because it had racing tires and

    not street tires like my car. I took 14 faster and yet I could not

    pull past this caymen S on the track. Now I

    have passed alot of Caymen S's on the track but

    this one car had something special about it. Thanks

    for opening up my eyes.

    Some people have put 3.8 x-51 motors in Caymens.

  2. I've read the threads on installing cruise control on a drive-by-wire boxster and got all excited. Now I noticed that there is no cruise control icon on my speedometer. I assume that it's only there to let yo know that the cruise is turned on, but without it, can I still install the 4 stalk switch and have it activated? It's a 2003 Boxster S, US Spec, 6 speed.

    I am constantly amaized at how much information is on this website. Thanks to all of you who have contributed and posted.

    You can install the stalk, however, the 'Cruise' function is enabled in two places, first the instrument cluster and secondly the DME, without both enabled you will not be able to use 'Cruise', the install is covered on here. The activation is carried out using either a PST2 or its' replacement the PIWIS, typically by a dealer.

  3. Fellow Porsche people,

    I'm looking around for a second Porsche. Specifically a pre-loved Cayman S. One of the dealers I visited mentioned that during the used car inspection they check "that the previous owner hasn't exceeded the redline more than three times". I have no doubt that the Porsche diagnostic tool/computer can read that kind of information out from the engine computer... but this seems strange on so many levels. Can anyone confirm that the PST2 (diagnostic tool) can really read out such things? Is there also tracking on max GForces I wonder? Do dealers really inspect these sorts of things before certifying a used car?

    The PIWIS can be used to verify engine use ie over-revs. For the 987 there are 6 ranges:

    1 - RPM Achieved 7300 to 7500

    2 - RPM Achieved 7500 to 7700

    3 - RPM Achieved 7700 to 7900

    4 - RPM Achieved 7900 to 8400

    5 - RPM Achieved 8400 to 9500

    6 - RPM Achieved 9500 to 11000

    Ranges 1-3 are generally overlooked by the dealer and 1-2 can easily be hit with hard acceleration and hitting the 'rev limiter'

    Ranges 4-6 are generally hit by incorrect down shifting most common going from a high revved 5 down to 2 instead of 4 etc. These are not generally liked by the dealer and could indicate abuse. 6 being the worst and this occurs when the engine hits the mechanical rev limiter btw.

  4. I recently acquired a 2006 C4S and wanted to update the PCM and Nav to the latest software and nav maps, so I got the update from Suncoast and followed the TSB and it worked fine. Since it was an '06, it already had the 05025xxx Model Level B software (version 3.2), so I only need to update the Nav firmware and put in the new DVD map disk.

    I had read that version 3.3 improves the telephone quality and MP3 playback which I'm most interested in getting, but the Suncoast update package does not include the Model Level C update to 3.3. I believe someone referred to it as 000 043 205 46 007. Is that correct and any idea how I can obtain this update without a visit to the dealer?

    Any guidance from the experts here would be much appreciated.

    You can get the discs, which include the firmware updates and an updated map from the dealer, although the TSB 32/07 states that the firmware should only be done by the dealer it is quite straight forward.

    The correct part number is 997.044.901.51

  5. I assume these latest special 2008 models mean the 2009 987's are still many months away. Otherwise, Porsche wouldn't have bothered with any special editions to stretch out the 2008 model year. :unsure:

    If you were expecting DFI etc in the 987 for 2009 you maybe disappointed. These specials will hit the dealers in November 2008. Strictly speaking this makes the 2009 models but Porsche are cleverly branding these as 2008 specials.

    If I were Porsche I would push the new 997.2 with DFI hard for the first half of the year then launch the new 987 models so that these hit the dealers July/August 2009, just before the 2009 model year cut off.

  6. I bought my 08 Boxster S Limited Edition in Atlanta and drove it back to Orange County CA where I reside. Getting the car registered in CA was not easy as the local DMV insisted on inspecting the car and demanded to see the emission control sticker. There was no sticker under the front and rear trunk lids, so my only option was to call McKenna Porsche who informed me that the emission sticker is located on top of the engine cover. They tried to talk me over the phone on how to access the engine but being on a cell phone on a busy parking lot with a DMV person on your back I was not able to do it. I had to drive to the dealer to have them prep the car so I could go back to the DMV to have them inspect the car. It was made more difficult due to the fact my car has the optional Bose High End Sound package which includes rear speakers and sub woofer that has to be disconnected and removed in order to access the engine. The wire harness is very difficult to remove...

    I can't say enough for the way McKenna took care of me and they have a customer for life...They even offered to put it back together for me afterward all of this at no charge. This isvery nice considering that I did not buy the car from them.... Good customer service is rare these days..

    Future out of state buyers registering a car in CA should practice getting to the engine to avoid wasting a day at the DMV...

    Nick, there is a reason these "Agreements" between owners and Porsche are not communicated very well. They are Confidential Agreements, and Porsche requires a signed statement as such.

    Well as I have not signed an agreement, for those with Conti2 tires fitted to the cars this is what I have been told:

    The Conti tires are 10/32's tread depth new.

    If you get a puncture in the tire it will require the replacement of all 4 tires.

    If the tread depth is 4/32 or greater then Porsche will pay for 3 of the 4 tires, the owner pays for the 4th tires which is the one that got a puncture. For example if you were driving Michelin tires and got a puncture and had to replace a single tire, you'd have to buy the tire so having to buy the one with the puncture is no different than any other brand. What Porsche is saying is that tires are to be replaced when they hit the wear bars which is at 2/32's I believe, meaning if your tires are at 4/32's you've used up 75% or more of the life of the tire. If the tires are above 4/32's then Porsche is picking up the tab to replace the 3 that didn't get punctures.

    A similar situation may exist for those requiring just rears due to wear with the fronts being replaced for free, but expect to pay for both the rears.

    Remember this is not being advertised by PCNA or communicated to dealers so if you don't kick up a fuss don't expect any assistance!! Get the service manager to call PCNA, the aftersales guy who looks after tires is Tim Reeder 1-770-290-3644

  8. I will be needing tires soon. I am actually quite happy with the OEM ContiSportContact2's. They really seem to hug these twisty roads in Kentucky, wet or dry. Does anyone have experience with the newer ContiSportContact 3's?

    I have just installed x51 headers on my 2006 C2S. I am convinced that the car runs and sounds smoother. They are an exact replacement for stock. There are six bolts that hold each header to the block. The bolts were removed easily. The only snag I had on installation was some difficulty with the aft most bolt...it was not lining up correctly. I simply loosened the cat clamp to the muffler and the bracket clamp on the cat.....whala...Do yourself a favor and lossen the cat brackets and clamps first..the bolts will easily line up for you.

  10. So I purchased a wired FM modulator so that I can get an aux input. I needed to get to the back of it to rewire the antenna lead to pass through the FM modulator.

    There are several how-tos with pictures out there for radio removal on a 987. I viewed them, understood them, got the needed torx and wrenches and went to work.

    However I cannot get the 4 fingers pushed in. The little plactic gizmos that are supposed to rotate and push them in do nothing. As I manipulated it, one fell right out. Its as if they were not installed correctly at the factory.

    I am thinking about cutting off the fingers but not sure I can get a tool in there to do it.

    Anyone have similar problems? Any ideas? Help, help help!

    Once again, this is a 987 not a 986; the mounting and removal are completely different.

    The trick is to push the tab in and then turn the 'plastic gizmo' to hold the tab in place, the 'gizmos' are not really upto moving the tabs on their own. BTW there is also a 'security' bolt on the right hand side which has to be undone.
