thanks for the help, got it fixed, the thing inside with the hole in it had come a bit loose, had tried to push it back down but didn't use enough force until I realized that it was the thing preventing the lid from moving

The little white catch thing is there.The lid is parallel to the side of the ashtray and won't move.

This sounds stupid but I removed the ashtray from my new (to me) 2000 996 C4 and I can't get it to fit back in. The lid seems to be stuck in a vertical position. the ashtray goes back into place but the lid is locked and won't close. There is a gear like cog on one end of the ashtray and there is a metal stop that wont let the lid release.
