  1. I have been to two different places trying to get a code after this happens

    car runs fine, all of a sudden engine light will flash 3 times fast, engine starts missing, car quit once, but both times it has happened I was able to get into a parts place once and a shop once, they put scanner on no nodes, but by that time car stopped missing and light was off

    any ideas, it felt just like a cyl miss. do I need a special scanner to see it there is a held code? one scanner was at a autozone, the other scanner was a OTC scanner

    It is not uncommon for a generic or "global" OBD II scanner to not see some codes on Porsches; you need to have it scanned with a Porsche specific scanner such as the PIWIS or Durametric system.

    Try Durametric. Much cheaper at $250-ish

    If you use an Android phone, you can get a $15 OBDII bluetooth scanner and the $5 Torque App. Leave the scanner in the car and plug it in as soon as the CEL is ON. It sounds like you had some misfires that cleared out by the time you tried to read the codes.

    it definitly did not set a hard code that the typical obdIII scanner could see. car shows no codes off two different scanners, I will contact Durametric today and see if they can read any pending codes or codes not hard set. wow its been a while since I did any of this (pre '95)

  3. welcome to the club. mis- fires seem to be getting common on these cars now. They're 14 years old. Yes, there are codes stored by now. If you can't get to a shop with a pst2 or a PIWIS, try and find a shop with durametric software.

    There are numerous threads up on this forum specifically about CEL's, codes and common ignition, coil, plug problems on 996 cars.

    The starting point for diagnostics usually are:

    coilsplugs

    connectors

    fuel trims

    ground straps at battery and from engine block.

    gremlins effecting wiring. ( yes, rodents do crawl up into our cars and chew on wires ).

    And, of course , this forum has some very knowledgeable folks to reach out to. ( Loren , in particular )

    I assume then these three are the only scanners that could find a code that is not showing up with the OTC or (autozone brand) scanner?

    thanks, like I siad light is not on now, car is not missing, and no codes came up when car turned back on after hooking up scanner.

    now to try and find a shop someone in NE georgia, im over 65 miles out of atl up here!

  5. well that newtous very nice 996 cab that was so clean

    is now, not so clean.

    my wife had to go to fl, her dad fell and was paralyzed from a neck injury and they did a emergnecy surgery, amazing is, he has some slight movement in arms and legs now (thank god)

    but while there someone tried to break into her car, bummed, the stang had just got painted from a hit and run and we are selling it so she did not want to drive it to fl and back so she took the 996

    they bent convertible top frame between the material and the metal frame above the window, I wish they had just busted the glass out, it would had been a easier repair and less damage.

    they tried to get into it between the glass right at the top of dooor and quarter too, they gouged the dag gone paint trying to get something in there too

    so not only did they bend some part of the convertible top frame, they ruined the factory paint and gouged the inside leather panel right rear section

    funny thing is, there was nothing isnide the car excepot a small woodne cross my wife keeps around her mirror

    I assume the alarm went off, but no one pays attention to them anyhow, not sure if it happend while she was at he hospital, or when it was at her dads house parked outside overnight

    you cant have anything kept nice and use it

    this is the downfall of driving one of these fine automobiles...............

  6. our 1st road trip in it

    we took a trip to fl for some turkey and to see family and friends, about 1500 miles RT. this car was more comfortable than I thought it would be!, some of the roads were aq bit rough in S GA. but the seats were very comfy, and it was not a rough ride like i expected, the seating position was better than our '11 mustang GT we have,

    on one tank we hit 22.8 mpg, the lowest we got was 18.7 and that tank was running around Daytona for the turkey rod run, visiting some friends, andfamily, but mostly all highway speeds were 80-85, I can say, highway this car gets 21+mpg, which im pretty happy with!

    my grandson thought this car was awesome!~ loves grandma's new car better than her red one (the Mustang GT convertible) it has to be the spoiler as he is only 6, still I got a kick out of it when he saw it!, all in all, i enjoyed the trip in this car, and my wife really enjoyed it and let me do most all the driving (and no I did not get a speeding ticket! woo hoo!!) on the trip the windo started acting up, so I dugg arouund and after asking a question about it, I took the door panel off yuesterday and found a bbroken plastic piece on one of the window regulator cables, my wife ppicked pone up at the dealer on the way home from work last night and I will have ot back together this am, I was pretty impressed they had a part in stock for a 2000 model

    the good thing about the window issue is, I get the car today as soon as I get it back together <grin>

    I think we are going to enjoy this car, it is fun to drive and overall a very comfortable car for a sports car!

  7. Isn't it possible that the plastic bits (that Deven Wala mentioned in his oil) are bits of an impeller from a blown water pump?

    Not unless he also has water in his oil.

    The oil system and coolant system should be separate unless something else is wrong.

    Thankfully there is no detectible intermix. The few small brown bits I see I tend to believe are from the chain guides. These are so few I would tend to take a monitoring approach. Some of back plastic bits are almost the size of a pencil eraser and as thick as a dime and there are many more of these. If these are from the chain guides it scares the heck out of me. I am hoping that I can track the source down to a perished AOS, oil filler tube or some such thing. Other than plastic bits in the oil are there any other signs of chain guides going bad short of catastrophic engine failure?

    I know splitting the engine to replace the guides can't be cheap. I paid cash for the car and am already in another 3K so I'm tapped out for a bit. I'd really like to be able to drive the car but I'd also would really like to be able to continue to drive it. Any thoughts or opinions?

    wow that is one thing I did not think about, splitting the engine to do stuff liike that, I just flat forgot all about that. on the advantage side of this, the wife did kind of like my idea of getting a lift to park both of "her" cars in the garage on top each other, which I am going to check into after the 1st of the years, I do only have a 9ft ceiling though, or adding a garage here

  8. The change over is really only cosmetic, no real functional difference.

    There is one difference on the 3.8 box, it has a vacuum operated flap that the 996 3.4 does not. I know this because I have a 3.8 box that I bought a couple of years ago still sitting in my work room (along with several other mods I have not gotten around to). I am still trying to decide whether to have this flap fix open or closed for the install. On a 3.8 there must be a change over switch controlled by the ECU.

    thanks, I found a 996 air box pretty reasonable (ok cheap) but that 997 does look much nicer, so I'm going to search around some more, btw, is the silver part where it says Porsche 3.8, metal? or just a coated plastic?

    looking at ours again I see the air horn going to the trunk says AEM on it, the air tube to intake says K&N here is a pic of ours I took this AM

  9. Thanks KTS, Mine is a black 2000 cab as well. I have to admit I'm currently wondering what I have gotten myself into as mine sits unmoved since the drive home. :( I will be really interested to follow your ownership experience as well. I would have liked to have the tan interior instead of the gray but am happy not to have an extra spoiler to remove

    I was not planning on buying a older Porsche for us to use as a driver, but this one just fell into place, it was very clean, 60k miles and at a dealership I seem to trust, they took the car in the back, put it on the lift had a head tech look it over with me, him telling me about this car,

    there was no way I could pass it up., I got lucky to find one here this clean at a pretty well trusted dealer from what I ahve read about them online, and one of the best places that have ever treated my wife as the buyer. being a tech for many years, I know alot about cars, just have not touched a porsche in gosh 20 years, and never was a porsche tech, in fact the only water colled porsche I ever touched was the 924/944's which we owned one of each before.

    have patience, do each repair carefully, and most off all, keep your work area and parts spotless, clean everything correclty before reassembly do not bevel sealing surface and do not overtorque anything and all will be well, I have known many Porsche owners and they are a very dependable automobile if you take care of it and do the job right.

  10. The electric hood and trunk release was not available in 2000 (or at least not stock). A previous owner probably replaced the remote key head with one from a later year that had two functions.

    There is a lighter retrofit kit available that changes the lighter from the European size to the IS size, about $20.

    Oh, and did I say that no one will believe you have the car without some pictures!

    Thank you, I'll have to add a couple pictures from the dealer photos where we bought it, we only have one of it we took so far and that was the night we bought, never took the time to take pics yyesterday, had to drive it ya know <grin> the pic in our avatar is one of our car with the spoiler on it the previous owner had added, I’m trying to figure out how to upload a picture now.

  11. Hello, we just found this forum, we just purchased our 1st Carrera Saturday evening.

    It is a Black Cabriolet with Savanna Beige leather interior, 6 speed manual, stability management, hifi sound package, power seat package, 18" Sport Classic wheels, I assume those are stock wheels not an option package.

    It had 60k miles on it, it has had a open air box done on it and a spoiler put on it, out side of that, I am pretty sure it is all stock, I actually bought this car from a Porsche dealership here. My wife is really happy with it even though she "let" me drive it most all Sunday, I think the keys are now gone for good though <g>, she has said she may want to take it to the track and do a track day of some sort. Nothing serious, just to have some light fun once in a great while. She has done a couple car and motorcycle before

    I have a couple questions about a couple things on the car, so I came here to find the answers,

    one is to see if I can add the electric hood release to it, this has a manual lever on the door sill, which works fine, but the key fob does have a button marked to open it, I only assume this was an option for 2000 as when you push the button on the fob, the alarm light on the dash will flash. So I am wondering if this can be retro fitted? It would be nice for her to be able to open the trunk so she can put her work computer into it without have to open the car up first, just a convenience thing.

    We will also need to do something about the lighter, the lighter will not hold a charging plug, I also noticed the radio has a whine to it when it is running, a pretty good one, it made me wonder if there is a filter that is bad? I may possibly find and put a closed air box back on it, a CAI that has the air filter open inside the engine compartment seems to defeat the purpose of a cold air intake.

    I'm going to dig around the forums for a while and get used to the place, just thought I would say hello mention the new to us Porsche
