  1. To bump up this older thread, I just noticed the same thing earlier this week when I took my wheels off to clean them and do a brake bleed and noticed some grease on my wheel behind the center cap.

     

    Interestingly, the wheel with the grease was from the passenger side of the car, but the grease on the end of the axle was on the driver side. That wheel was bone dry, as was the rear wheels from the 2 other sets of wheels I run from time to time.

     

    The wheel that had the grease got moved to the passenger side after a track weekend last October at Roebling Road when I flipped my Hankook R-S3 tires on the rim and moved them to the other side. So if the grease was ejected from the axle, it appeared to have happened before I moved the wheels, presumably at that track day?

    Factors that may have caused that wheel area to heat up more than normal could be that I picked up a fair amount of speed since my last time there, running laps in the 1:29.x range which was 2 seconds faster than my previous best, and I also had a huge spin that weekend that may have caused things to heat up?

    I also have TC on my Boxster (2000 S) and I wonder if the TC was going off and braking that left rear wheel and heating it up?

     

    Any follow up on this issue - Eric was your car OK and /or did this issue happen again?

    Edit: I have not crawled under there to see if there is any grease coming out of the back side - I will do it this weekend and inspect the CV Boot and see if I can determine whether it is low on grease and needs some added.

  2. I have been fighting with a hard to open front trunk on my 2000 Boxster S. Last week the Bowden cable snapped about an inch from the lever when I pulled the handle to open the front trunk. I have got a new cable assembly, and I have got the hood latch off and the handles inside the cockpit off, but I have been unable to find a procedure on how to replace the whole Bowden cable (part #11 on this diagram: http://www.autoatlanta.com/porsche-parts/hardparts.php?dir=986-97-04&section=803-00 on the "up to year 00" line, part # 99651101701)

    I have got the Bentley manual, the 101Projects book, and even a CD I bought with a bunch of service manuals in PDF format, but I have been unable to find a procedure to replace this cable. Does anyone know what all I have to take off in order to gain access, and from what side I install the cable?

  3. What settings do you pick in durametric to track these oxygen sensor value? There are a couple of categories of O2 values and I'm not sure which one. Also did you have to take screenshots or does the tool automatically save logs of your values? I am troubleshooting a P430 and this would be very helpful.

    Eidt: oh wow this is an old thread :)

    Just got the same problem. I plotted the O2 sensors before and after the cat on both banks using Durametric.See below graphs:My analysis:Bank 1 has the post sensor oscillating nicely following what the pre sensor measures. The Cat must definitely be shot!For Bank 2, it's more like what I expected, only that the value of the post is pretty high. I was hoping to see it stable around 0.45V?Anybody can give me some feedback and an educated analysis of the graphsAm I right? Do I just have a bad cat on Bank 1 and sensors are fine?It is with the Engine at Idle after a 10min drive (so warm everything)....Thanks!Rich.PS: It is on a US 996 C4S 2002 , 6 spd with 39K miles and quiet a few track days in the past 6 months... :-)mblso4.jpg

  4. I am troubleshooting a P0430 right now on a 2000 Boxster S. From the Bentley manual I thought that 2000-2004 had the O2 sensors before and after the header cat (26 & 27 in the pic above), with no sensor after the main big cat that is closer to the tailpipe. I have seen several vendors that state that you can remove the big cat with no CEL because there is no monitoring after that cat. I thought that the 97-99 were the only ones that had an O2 sensor after the big cat (since that was the only cat they had, they would have 25 & 27 in the pic above). I had a line on a replacement big cat but I told that person never mind because I thought I needed the header cat.

    I have never looked under the car so I am only basing from what I have read, but I feel like Papa Klump: I'm confused.
