  1. Tried a video with no luck. Could not hear squat. Checked all the fluid and there is no power steering fluid. It is below cold on the dipstick. It was full last time I checked. But there is no fluid on the ground.
  2. I have had my 1999 996 cabrio for 5 months and had a bunch of little problems. But now I have a big one. I really don't want to take to the dealer 40 minutes away for a diagnosis. I really don't have time. I am sorry if this is not organized well, so if you think of a more specific question let me know. So here goes. Put on the hard top. Went to a movie that night and then to work. The car makes a groaning nosie at times. I have tried to narrow it down but I can't. I can not hear it at highway speeds. It is intermittent. It is not there when I start the car, but it is there sometimes when I am stopped at a stoplight. I happens when I turn the steering wheel left or right, and sometimes it does not. Some times it is there when I apply the brakes. Then temps have been in the 30's. Don't know if that matters. The noise seems to be from the back drivers side. I thought maybe a bearing but happens when I am stopped. I thought maybe the transmission, but happens in neutral or in gear, clutch in or out. No lights on. Car runs perfect. Just a loud groan at times. So if you guys can walk me through it step by step, I would appreciate it. I am going to check pulleys when I get home. I did this a few weeks ago and all seemed good. Oh, and is it safe to drive? I do have to drive home from work, but if I take to the dealer 40 miles away do I tow it or drive it?
  3. I have cleaned all 4 drains and get the grommet things back up through the holes. All drains are clean and flow freely, but I still get a lillte water in the driver footwell. I have had the carpet out and squirted the car with a hose, all the roof and door seals and hood an no leak. I have read about a tsb for the 1999 models only but can not find it. I searched and can't find it. Anyone point me in the right direction?
  4. Actually I took the cheap way out. Just changed the oil after 1000 miles. Small amount of debris on magnetic plug and non in filter. Car is running perfect. Got out the exact 9 quarts of oil I put in. Oil was still clear. So I am just going to drive and enjoy for now.
  5. I had the dealer give the car a once over and they noticed nothing (when I got the car). Is there a way I can test for this?
  6. Got my car back and it runs perfect. 1999 Carrera 4 Cab. But... When I take my foot off the accelerator when in gear (for example, going down a hill) from the right rear there is a noise. It goes away if I apply the brakes or push the accelerator. It reminds me of an engine brake, but not as loud. Anyone have any thoughts?
  7. Found a guy on renn list who will print one for 30 euros. They look good.
  8. I hit a deer and the car needs a new hood (among other things). Is there a way to get a new option code sticker for it?
  9. Lost maybe a half pound of pressure in an hour. Do I care?
  10. I am pressure testing the cooling system with a Pittsburgh Auto pressure tester from Harbor Freight. How long do I test? What pressure do I go to? How long should it hold and should it drop at all?
  11. I have not had my Porsche for a winter yet, but I got my first set of snow tires 2 years ago for my kids when they started driving and what a difference. My research on the web and personal experience have confirmed you should be fine. My daughters FWD car with snow tires easily out performs my AWD car with snows. AWD may help with acceleration over 2WD, but stopping and sliding are tire dependent.
  12. Waiting to hear about the lubrication question. I have not had my hard top on yet, but I think I can answer the drain question. I do not think the drains are needed on the rear when the hard top on. I have spent hours trying to track down leaks and have watched the drains in progress with the interior disassembled. The drains take water that runs off the convertible top and goes inside the black trim piece of the shell (there is a gap there) and delivers it out the rear wheel wells. I think the hard top covers this piece and the water just runs off.
  13. I can actually add some relevant advice for one. Same thing happened to me, sort of. Anyway, once you open it manually it gets out of sync. You need to go to a dealer and they should be able to resync it for a couple hours labor at most. When mine was out of sync some of the motors would work and some would not. I thnk you can also resync it yourself if you have a durametric thing.
  14. Sorry if I am beating a dead horse, but I still have a few questions So to summarize my issue so far 99 996 c4 Cab with 38,000 miles Ran perfect. Went to get IMS done. IMS was on its way out. Bearing was intact, but metal shavings everywhere. Just flushed the motor again last night (for the 3rd time after IMS change) and still getting metal flakes in the filter and on the magnet drain plug. Not much, but still noticeable. Cost for a new rebuild (with my good core) is between $8500 and $18000. I decided I was going to flush and drive it until it dies but now having second thoughts. I can't in good conscience even think about selling the car. The concern from the shop is all those metal flakes will cause premature wear of the engine. Car runs perfectly now (still) Now the big question. How do I tell? Is there a way to look for engine wear without taking it apart? Some kind of camera? A test? What specifically is going to wear?
  15. Here are the pics he sent. Thoughts? (But I only want a response if you say that it does not look bad)
  16. The guy I am working with is a flat 6 certified and trained guy. He said he does the same rebuilds as they do with the same upgrades at the same cost. I looked at other rebuild shops. Ruled out motormeiser from bad reviews. But I found another place called ufomotorsports that will exchange the motor for $7500. Anyone ever hear of them?
  17. I know, you guys are thinking another IMS thread. Well here goes. 1999 Carrera 4 Cab. 38K miles. No problems running. Took for prophylactic IMS change. Just called by the mechanic. IMS was going. Metal in the engine everywhere. He gave me 2 choices 1 - rebuild for 12-15K. At this point no damage to engine and would be a good core. 2- change IMS and flush motor and hope no other problems Any thoughts?
  18. Ok solved it. I am now the cabrio drain expert. Have traced all drains. Found where I think the leak was. It was leaking past the grommet under the drain under the steering. Going to put the car back together again and hope I got them all.
  19. Took everything apart again. Sat in the car with the seat on my back, carpet in one hand, flashlight in the other. Son with hose over top. Found the leak. It is coming from the front. Middle. Need to remove gas pedal. Anyone know how to do that? Also is there a seal under the hood. Besides around the trunk? There is a lot of water on the battery tray and the front drain areas. Also, where does the left middle drain go? When I dump water in it, it goes to the floor of the garage, but can I get to the bottom of it any way?
  20. Please help. I aready did a search and can not find any advice so here goes. 99 c4 carbio New top Driver side floor front and rear wet after washing car. What I have done: Cleaned both rear drains. From their input to the catch basin and the to the drainage point in the tire. All clear both sides and both drainage tubes intact. All four front drains repaired (2 of the tubes were pushed through, but I brought them back). All 4 now flow freely to their drain points. Replaced seals on rear quarter windows whch were both shot. I have gone from lots of leaks to now ust little. Back seat in no longer wet. Just floor. Cant see any leaks in any other seals. Front firewall dry so if coming from front I can not tell. So what next?
  21. Sorry for the stupid questions, but I am at work for 36 hours and the 996 is at home drying out. So I figured I would wask a few questions I could probably answer if I had a manual. I ordered it on ebay, just waiting for results. 1 - does a 1999 996 c4 cabrio have daytime running lights? If so mine does not. 2 - are the headlights automatic? I enjoy turing them on and off, but even my 1998 and 2001 alero had auto lights 3 - seatbelt warning light. Until yesterday never saw the seatbelt warning light. It does not come on when I start the car. the rest of the dummy lights come on. Yesterday when I unbuckled the seat belt with the car running the light came on and beeped. I saw where the light was and it worked. Next time I tried to get it to come on it did not. Do I care? 4 - passenger heated seates work about every 4th time I drive the car. Never get flashing light that I read about during the search. It either works or it does not. Wife said its ok since she only rides every 3rd or 4th trip anyway. Driver side always works. 5 - Odometer stays on after I remove the key from ignition. Radio sometimes stays on after ignition switched off and key removed. I have to use they key to lock the car. When I lock it the odometer and radio usually go off, but one occasionally the radio stays on after I lock the car. 6 - Remote works about as well as the passenger seat heater. Going to get that replaced eventually (already searched and found answers) but I actually like using a key. Just a bummer no passenger side lock. To be a gentleman and open the door for wife, the sequence usually goes as follows. We leave a wonderful dinner and walk to the beautiful car. She stands beside her door waiting for me to open it. I push the button on the remote in the hopes that it works. After it does not I have to walk the the driver side, unlock the door, then go to her side and let her in.
  22. Ok. Took of the other seat belt and found another little metal ring. So got that figured out. But still trying to figure out what the black plastic piece is.
  23. 99 c4 cabrio. After 1 rainstorm 2 inches of water on the floor. Clean up, replace some seals, and clean drains. 2 of the rubber grommets under the hood were not even pushed through the holes. Did all of this and then drove tonight thought the great rain of the Midwest 2013. Got home and carpets were damp. Drivers side only - front and rear. Disassembled everything I could and dried the carpets. Still could not find leak so I removed the rear interior panel. Actually followed directions and did not break anything (I don't think I did) Under the rear passenger seat was also soaked. I found this: I know I could have found it with just the speaker removed, but this was I learned something and I found under the seat (not the floor) was soaked When I lifted the side panel and carpet I found this behind the side panel and this fell to the floor any ideas?
