  1. This morning my 98 996 C2 cabriolet suffered braking problems. Whilst driving along at a reasonable rate, when I applied the brakes hard the response was fine, but if I applied the brakes again within a minute then the brake pedal became as hard as wood and barely depressed and did not slow the car much (as if the servo had gone?). If left alone for a little while it was fine, and then again if re-applied soon after it was really difficult to get it to move more than a centimetre or two and did not brake well.

I pulled over and shut down the engine and restarted and it seemed better after that although I was so careful it was difficult to tell. I nursed it back to the garage where I purchased it and have left it there (UK time - it is now closed), but obviously need it looked at.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

    James

  2. Last weekend two 15 year old boys broke into my house, grabbed the keys to my 996 C2 and took it for a spin. After jumping a red light a police car tried to pull them over, but they just sped off. They reached 100mph overtaking over the brow of a blind hill and the inevitable crash happened. They hit another car head on causing serious injuries to the 2 people in the other car (all 4 legs broken) but, as is often the way, the joyriders escaped without a scratch thanks to the 911 airbags, crumple zone, etc.

The 2 boys pleaded guilty and each got 8 months in youth detention centre, the 2 people they injured are still in hospital 10 days later.

This is what my car looked like afterwards:

It should at least provide you with some comfort to know how strong the 911 is.

  3. 996 C2 coupe RHD.

After an unusual spell of dry weather here in the UK, it started raining. I put on my windscreen wipers and they did not work, neither the front (via the stalk) or the back (via the button).

Obvious - a fuse fault as they are on the same fuse and everything else is fine. I checked the fuse and it looked alright, put it back in and the wipers all worked. Then stopped again 20 mins later. I replaced the fuse - but still not working.

Then I went to put on my lights, the side lights worked, but the main lights, full beam and fog lights do not work.

I spoke with the garage and they said probable relay problem and it is booked in for Monday - any suggestions that I can try before I go as it will no doubt be expensive?

    Thank you.

  4. 996 C2 1998 Silver

I have just seen that bird crap on my spoiler lid has actually caused the paint to blister and peel off, it is about 1cm across and then a smaller patch next to it. The picture does not really show the detail, but the paint underneath has curled up and will come off when I clean this. Is there an easy repair? I have a silver touch up pencil, but the area is quite large.

    Thank you for any advice.

Porsche repainted my GT3 style spoiler three times because the paint kept bubbling, finally replaced it with a new one and I'm awaiting results. I suspect the underlying fiberglas was not properly cured.

Thanks wwest, I thought I may have to take it to the garage rather than home repair. I'll see what they say.

  6. Hi Guys,

Would really appreciate your help if you can let me know what is the maximum tyre size i can put in the front and rear of a 00-996 c2? Also what size spacers would i have to use - 5mm or 7mm?

    Thanks,

    Samvit

Hi Samvit, I don't want to hijack your thread, but I was about to post a query on spacers similar to yours.

I have just fitted 18" Porsche Sport Design GT3 style alloy wheels to my 98 996 C2 with 265/35x18 rear and 225/40x18 front.

What is a good size spacer and can you fit different front/rear? It looks like a 14mm rear and 7mm front would be good - or should they be the same?

    Tks

  7. My 99 996 Coupe had a CR-11 (tape cassete) with the CDC-3 CD Changer.

I had a Becker TrafficPro 7820 installed today, and this works fine, but the CD changer has stopped working (it wont even eject the CDs - no power). The CR-11 was reinstalled to try and get power to the changer to at least eject the CDs, but even that wont work with the changer now.

What could the de-installation of the working CR-11 and installation of a TrafficPro done to stop the changer working?

    Thank you.

  8. If you're running WATER (I mean 0W40), you can easily see 1 bar when the oil temp gets above 230F. Get rid of that weight oil if you are using it and move up to the proper weight oil in the hotter months. (15W50).
It is not what you would call the 'hotter months' here in the UK (it was snowing lightly today), but I see 1.5 bar at idle when engine is warm independant of the weather. However it does sound as if I should not worry too much about 1.5 bar. Thanks.
  9. Per the earlier email:

    ------

    Normal operation of oil gauge:

Cold startup = 5 bar at all rpms

Fully warmed engine at idle = about 2 bar

    Fully warmed engine above 3000 rpm = 4 - 5 bar

Nevr, ever below 1 .5 bar no matter how hot it is.

    ------

My '98 996 C2 coupe is running at 1.5 bar at idle when fully warm. I have only had it a few months and I am sure that it was slightly higher when I first got it (the oil level has only dropped slightly from full to slightly below full).

Should I check anything? or is it only concerning if it now drops below the 1.5?

    Thanks.
