  1. The allen screws require a 5mm allen wrench. You may or may not be able to get the wrench into the hole without removing the seat. You do not have to take the screws out as TP said, just loosen them 2-3 turns. Then grab the black plastic surround piece at one end and pull up. It is in tight as there are 3 or 4 plastic friction plugs holding it in.

OK so I pulled the assymbly and fixed it. How do I put it back together though??? The bolts need to go in on the collars and it doesn't seem so easy?

  2. Hey Loren can you please check the rennlist discussion on the tranny fluid as there seems to be some uncertainty regarding the amount, i.e. whether to fill it until it comes out of the fill hole- which is always more than the diy states or to simply put the diy amount in and call it a day. Thanks Sean I am going to change mine again and exchange whatever the hell I have for the correct stuff from that dealership. Maybe I should have them check my tranny beforehand etc.? Any suggestions? Again, I am worried they did sell me the wrong stuff and some damage might have occured?

  3. I have this exact same problem on my 996. Is your gt3 a mkI? I have had the slave cylinder replaced to no cure. I am told that there is a TSB for replacing the clutch arm as it wears poorly creating a wierd recess that allows uncertain engagement as you describe..

  4. Hey Loren, what's your take on the 0/40 v. 10/40 oil, or whatever the previous weight was, 5? I would think that the lifter bleed down requires the 0 but since it doesn't get that cold here in CA and because we have 99's that more protection is needed that 0 doesn't give? The reason I ask is because I am going to do an oil change soon

  5. Thanks guys. I don't have a chirp from the alarm. The car is currently in the body shop having some minor things fixed after I had the front end replanted and roll bar installed. I seem to remember when I noted it the first time that the plunger wasn't moving at all but I think it made noise. I will check it out in detail when I recieve the car back. Wierd!

No TSB that I know of - if it is not locking then you should get an alarm chirp when you lock the car.

He may be experiencing the same thing I have run into:

The locking mechanism that pushes the locking plunger into the locked position for the gas door IS, in fact, actuating properly. Thus, no beep when setting alarm.

The entire plunger assembly was missing on my 99 C2 (bought used in 04) when I picked it up from the dealer. This was discovered during customer orientation - quite embarassing for the sales guy. I didn't notice a problem with alarm though...no chirps even with the assembly missing.

The locking mechanism was replaced under CPO warranty a week later. Good luck.

  6. Pretty cool. It would be great if you could bleed the brakes just like the real deal for the diy guy. The price seems reasonable and is usb and not serial which is great. FWIW I had the deal from obdII.com and it made my laptop crash and didn't work, that was with the correct one - after they sent me the wrong :(. Needless to say as a student I could not have that instability- I only have a laptop-

Loren please delete my other thread, sorry I didn't see this.

Now all we need to do is get a giac copy that is flashable via the motronic loader :)

How did the trial go ?
  7. It would be my guess that much like mercedes esp, the psm is coupled with an open differential that merely breaks the wheels like the porsche traction control however it uses yaw sensors to do the input instead of a wheel speed sensor - also maybe using the wheel speed sensor as well. That would be nothing like a LSD. LSD transfers power to both wheels whereas the esp function and maybe psm would merely brake a wheel to limit slip- again, more like traction control

I didn't know that you could get the LSD on a 996 on anything other than GT cars and my 99.

Don't PSM cars have ABD, an electronic method coupled to the ABS, to act as an LSD?
  8. my second gear engagement has been pretty crappy lately unless is HOT, i.e. I drive the car hard for a while HOT. So I was worried it might not be the right fluid and really I have been worrying about the diff. I wouldn't even want to know how much that would cost to replace. I will probably go to the dealer and give them what I have left which is enough for another change and watch them give me the right stuff and then change it again when I change my oil next weekend. Thanks again Loren.

LOL I have no idea what was in that container. Porsche only approves the use of the synthetic gearoil specified.

If you are really concerned then change to a Shell synthetic or Redline equal.

  9. So Loren I checked my invoice to try and figure out whether or not the fluid would cause any damage to my tranny. The part number listed is: 000-043-204-71

I noted that this part number is obviously different than that listed as approved. The dealer tried to tell me that that part number was approved for all P cars from 98-07???? It appears that my second gear and 4th are a pita to shift now. I don't know if the fluid is too slippery and is not letting the syncros engage or what but when I shift it into second say, it tickles the teeth and then goes in. I am wondering whether any damage occured and then it would be something to take up with them.

Please let me know what the part number is for. I checked my pet5 and it didn't come up.

    Thanks sean

EDIT: does anyone have a full list of approved gear oils/tranny fluids?
Yes, there is a list of "Porsche approved" transmission oils as well as motor oils in the (Contributor's Only) TSB section.

  10. Mosfet has almost nothing to do with power output other than maintaining it better. It merely describes a type of power supply.

Most amps in the head units are junk because they have high thd regardless of power output- that is why most people go to outboard amps.

    I have a 2000 996 C4 cab

The sound system in it is a wopper. I bought it used and the fellow before me had a system installed. It has two amps and subwoofer along with cd changer. The woofer and amps are very neatly located in the trunk. I believe the spare was layed down flat and the sub woofer actualy looks as if it is the hub for the spare it was ported out the wheel well. Then along side the tire twards the front two amps are mounted to the car vertically. I belive he then had a board cut that was carpeted with trunk carpeting and when it is place in you can't see any of it. The cd changer is mounted to the board where it is in most 996's. If you will email me I will take some photo's of it for you and email them to you.

I am not a big fan of booming radios, but it is nice with the top down to crank it up and hear every thing.

    Hi

I have a 99 C2 Cab with the Porsche stereo upgrade which is basically the Radio Cassette head unit and amp plus 6 cd setup. It is rubbish. The speakers are rubbish and the head/amp is rubbish too. So I set about changing it. In my 993 C2 I had a Pioneer Head with MOSFET chip - this basically between 45 and 55 amps depending on model yearand type but pumps out a good oomph and you don't really need an amp - it has lot sof settings to get bass power or whatever your musical tastes are. I had to change the multi cd and disconnect the Posrche amp as they are not compatible or so I was told. So basically my head unit drives the speakers direct. The shop did say that they could dis-assemble the little integrated speaker sets and put in new speakers but it was big money - £100's and didn't really seem worth it. The set up I have was around £150 for the head unit, £90 for the Pioneer CD multi and £100 labour including the special harness needed. Watch out for the alarm wire when you remove the old Porsche head as if you don't sort this properly, you get an alarm beep when you try and lock the car as it thinks some scally has stolen the radio. Easily fixed.

End result, not a bad sound, nice Pioneer head unit and not too much cash. If money is no object, then......well I know a man in the UK but......

  11. sost breakdown for flywheel and labor? Did they hand surface the pp upon installation?

Well any updates on the noises or performance of this mod? I have done quite a bit with Stillen and I love their work. I am currently trying to reduce the interior noise level in my car but I would definately like to make normal take offs a little easier, and just the general gains, and benifits from this mod are highly sought after by me. LMK :D
  12. That inflate a tire stuff is usually bad news. I have a small ari compressor and a plut kit in my car at all times and no spare

I remember reading a similar thread on this same topic on another forum a while back.

One other issue that was discussed in the thread was the fact that the spare tyre can act as load spreading device in case of frontal impact. It is apparently designed into the crash testing criteria for the 996.

Mind you all that could be just someones opinion ie BS, as I have not seen any official information regarding this in the owner's manual etc.

  13. Hey Loren/TP. I am interested in flushing my coolant and would like to know what the process is to fully pressurize the system and remove all the air. My father just picked up vacuum pump of some sort for a/c that seems like it would work great. I basically ended up draining all the fluid over the 4 times it took me to get the 3rd radiator stuff right, and I doubt my mix is ideal and am sure there is air in the system. Thanks! Sean

Does anyone know the Cayenne uses the same cooling as the Carrera? I couldn't find the information in my Cayenen manual.

According to a mechanic I know the Cayenne always had the pink stuff. The 986/996 used the yellow stuff. When the 987/997 came out they had pink. Porsche now says to use pink on all the cars.

  14. FWIW I have done the change before with the regular mobile 1 off the shelf from the local auto store. It is extremely hard to shift while cold.

I then went to the auto gallery and they are the ones who sold me the castrol which makes it shift like butter all the way around. However recently after about 15k it seems like the fluid has broken down or something, and the syncros are not being engaged as easily- i.e. maybe too slippery, but dunno.

I think I am therefore going to go back and get the oem part numbered fluid and go from there. BTW the castrol pictured that they sold me was what they gave me when I asked for gt3 tranny fluid. I asked for this because I have a limited slip. After talking with Jeff at sunset the gt3 and 996's run the same part number fluid FWIW. Loren also my tranny for whatever reason maybe becasue of the limited slip seems to use more fluid than a normal 996 and about the same as a gt3 maybe? I thought the increase in gt3 fluid was due to the tranny cooler though. In any event, back to stock stuff for me. Hopefully nothing bad has occured from the castrol. :)
