  1. Update.

    The durametric points towards one of the sensors so I've been given a quote to drop the engine to fit a new oil level sensor and oil pressure sensor. Whilst the engine is out they will check all wiring and connectors. Thing is, I thought the oil level sensor was accessible without taking the engine out?

  2. Do you know which specific sensor was replaced and which one you are wanting to replace now?

    The oil level sensor on the oil tank was changed. I think they were talking about doing the oil pressure or temperature switch next. Oil pressure gauge works fine though and the on board tries to measure the oil level once it's up to temp so doubt it's the oil temp sensor.

    Dealers charge 20 hours total for removal and installation. But it can be done in less than 16 hours. I would like to know exactly what sensor, related to your problem, need the engine removed….There are one other option for you, the installation of a GT3 dipstick….

    This is really useful! Do you know if I can literally just buy the indicated parts and have them fitted? Are they difficult to fit? Many tanks.

    Thanks for that. I think this would be the best option for me. However, that thread only suggests fitting the GT3 dipstick. It's unclear whether or not it can actually be done without dropping the engine. Anyone know if it can be done?

  5. I wouldn't drop the motor just for the sensor. Maybe in the future, if other, major, work is required. Just ignore the gauge. Monitor your oil level. And change it with the correct volume every 5,000 miles, or yearly.

     

    I know there's no dipstick on a 2001 but does it have a functioning low oil indicator light of some sort? If so, go by that. If the low oil level indicator comes on, add 1/4 litre to 1/2 litre until the lights goes off. Motor on. Rinse & repeat.

    What you've said makes a lot of sense. Can anyone confirm there is a secondary low oil indicator light that will come on if the oil gets really low? My plan is to change the oil for the correct amount every 3-5k Km's anyway. I'm not planning on doing big miles in it. The turbo also has the oil pressure gauge. Would this register some odd readings if the oil level was low?

  6. Hi all,

    I've alluded to this in a couple of other threads. My 'new to me' 2001 996 Turbo has a fault with the oil level readout from the digital display. The readout either shows it as being over full or completely empty. The previous owner used a specialist that changed the oil level sensor many years ago, which didn't work so then believed the clusters were at fault and required replacement. Since I picked up the car I've used a different specialist who diagnosed the fault to be with a sensor. They recommended I change the oil level sensor (again). They've since replaced the sensor, which again, has not worked. They now believe another sensor on the engine needs replacing, which requires an engine drop. I've told them to only initiate this work if they are certain it will fix the problem as it s going to be quite expensive on labour. Otherwise I will be faced with a bill for this work plus having to spend out on new clusters etc.

    The oil pressure dial works fine. I'm at a loss as to what is going on. I guess this could be sensor, wiring or cluster related!

    Any ideas as to what is should be looking at?

    Apologies for all the posts I've been making but I'm keen to get the car into good health so I can use it as it was intended.

  7. Hi all,

    My mechanic has tried changing the oil level sensor on the oil tank fix the inaccurate oil level reading I'm getting through my digital oil reading. This hasn't worked and he now believes he needs to change another sensor on the engine that will require dropping/removing the engine. How many hours should it take a Porsche specialist to drop the engine? I can find DIY guides but no time estimates.

    Thanks for that. I enquired about getting it fixed with radar mirror, who are probably a similar type of outfit to the place you quoted. Unfortunately, because the socket was damaged they couldn't repair it. Do you think the place you mentioned could repair the socket?

  9. Hi All,

     

    The auto anti dazzle mirror in my 996 turbo is screwed. Te mirror itself is cloudy with bubbles. Also, the socket that connects to the ball joint on the windscreen is damaged due to the sun so it's effectively hanging by the wires.

     

    I've pretty much had enough of the mirror and would like to swap it for a manual anti dazzle mirror. Is this possible?

    Thanks Loren. You've been most helpful in this and my other related thread. Yep, both cars are manuals.

    Another complication is that my car is Gulf specs as I'm in the Middle East. The cluster from the GT2 is for sale in the US. I don't think it's a US spec cluster though as the speedo (gauge not LCD readout) is in KMPH, the same as my Gulf spec car. Can't imagine this matters though!

    I have an update. I went for a second opinion on the oil level reading problem I've been having. The new mechanic I used diagnosed it as being the sensor on the engine that needs replacing. I have the part on order and I'm currently waiting for it to come in and I will then get it fitted by the new mechanic. I then went back to the original mechanic that diagnosed the faulty cluster and explained this to them. They showed me a receipt from 2008 (!) stating that they'd already had the engine oil level sensor replaced and confirmed the fault was traced to the cluster. Since then the previous owner, who only did a few thousand miles per year, would take it back to the mechanic to get the oil level checked periodically using a 'special tool'.

    Either;

    A - The original mechanic is correct and it is the cluster (or wiring).

    B - The sensor wasn't fitted properly by the original mechanic.

    C - The original mechanic is if telling lies and it does actually need a sensor.

    I can't really see why a cluster would fail though. The problem I have is the oil level reading either says it's totally full or empty. If it's a wiring issue, I hope it's traceable.

    I'm going to get the new sensor fitted anyway as the new mechanic seemed sure it was this. The onus will be on the mechanic to trace the issue if the sensor doesn't work. If this draws a blank I'll get them to look at the wiring before buying a used set of clusters and getting them coded to the car. To make matters worse, the speedo is in Kmph not Mph. These are harder to find on ebay etc. so I may just go for a MPH set and use the digital speedo rather than the crapppy speedo gauge.

    I have just bought a 996 turbo with a dodgy set of clusters that don't read the oil level correctly. The previous owner has had this tracked down to the cluster so it's not the sensor on the engine itself. I want to replace the cluster but don't want my pants pulled down by Porsche so I'm on the hunt for a used set. Can anyone confirm that I must use clusters from a turbo and not use the carrera cluster (which are cheaper and more readily available!). I've read a few posts about this but nothing conclusive.
