  1. Hi to All

I have looked over the forum for an answer but i am still confused. I have been told I need new Rotors and pads for my car. I plan to use the car for one DE event (2 Days) the rest of the time regular road use. I plan to get the zimmerman rotors (powder coated). As for the pads I am confused. What do you suggest I was told padig (but what colour) i was also told Mintex. I have to get this togeather this week I will be doing the work myself.

    Thanks to all

    Christopher

    Christopher....

To me Porsche brake questions are pretty simple. Unless one is going to develop a prepared track or autocross car, it would seem to me stock rotors and pads will do an exceptional job on a daily basis. I do several DE's a year as well as full autocross season and find the stock setup to work fine. If I was a bit more committed I might change to a better pad for DE's but all in all, stock Porsche brakes are great. Not a big fan up upgrading to cross drilled rotors, but would consider slotted if and when the time comes....

  2. It's nearly time for a new set of rear tires. I am currently running Falken Azenis AT615

    225/40 R18 front

    265/35 R18 rear

As far as I know (I'm the second owner) the suspension is stock 2001 986. The car has about 61 thousand miles.

I'm noticing some oversteer or at least a tendency toward it. My first tires were the Dunlop sport 9090. I went threw two sets. I was essentially unable to get oversteer without making major mistakes - she really wanted to understeer with those tires. The Falkens are nearly impossible to understeer - they are so much sticker!

I'm wondering what my options are to address the oversteer - to improve the balance. I feel safer (more control) with understeer than with oversteer.

I'm thinking about wider rubber on the rear...How wide can my rims handle before I'd need a wider rim (I believe they are the 9.5" model).

I just had the car aligned. I notice that the steering feels "lighter" - it is easier to turn. The car doesn't have the same intense desire to go straight that it had before the alignment. The alignment tech said that one rear wheel was way out of camber, but didn't say much about how the other wheels were before his adjustments - and I forgot to ask him. He did say he was surprised to see how evenly the tires were wearing, side to side and across the tread (I think that is a good thing?)

I'd appreciate any thoughts about my options.

    Thanks,

    David

    Hey David....

I have never subscribed to the theory that one tire is more prone to understeer/oversteer assuming that the tire is a high performance summer tire. What I have found is that tire pressure and alignment can effect the handling balance. I would be interested in the tire pressure you are running both front and rear as well as the alignment of the car. If you have max'd out the front camber and set the rear camber correctly, the car should be nicely balanced with crisp turnin. I autox extensively and will dial in understeer or oversteer with tire pressure as the course and weather conditions dictate. I currently run Potenza RE050A Pole Positions which I find quite acceptable but am considering a set of Falken 615's for better overall grip. Also, by turning off traction control you can also dial in more oversteer. I find a like the traction control off so that I am better able to rotate the back end (yes induce more oversteer). Going back to the alignment issue, make sure the alignment shop knows what they are doing. If they screw up the toe in the back, it can definitely cause a much more tail happy car. For a stock suspension, I suggest 0toe in front with .8deg neg camber. For the back, slight toe in and approx 1.1deg of neg camber. I think this is a great alignment setting for optimum performance from the stock suspension. Hope this helps somewhat....

  3. I am a big Bridgestone Potenza fan. Been running the 050A Pole Positons since late 2006. Have over 9k on them now and rears still look great. They have been fantastic at several DE's and 9 wins in 11 autox events. I usually run 34F and 36 R tires pressures and don't let them get over 40psi on the track. For a bit more money the Potenza 01R's would be my absolute #1 choice, but I really can't complain at all about the 050A PP's.quote name='420 Tecra' date='Feb 24 2008, 11:43 PM' post='94968']

    what up

first off i have to say that i reviewed many tires before finally make a decision to buy the bridgestone RE050A pole positions, and no i did not buy them just for the name ;)

i reviewed the continentals(contis), the michelin pilot sports (ps2's), and bridgestones obviously. if you wish to see the tire and read about it from tirerace.com which is a decent source to me, you may here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?si...=4&i1_Qty=4

if anyone happens to be running this tire and has any thoughts on it let me know, thanks

  4. Lots of AOS information over on PPBB. A bit of blue smoke on startup (especially when its cold outside) is pretty normal for many of us. AOS failure generally lets loose with a huge amount of smoke. Since you were cleaning the TB, did you notice any oil inside the TB? If so, then more than likely a AOS replacement is called for. Afraid I can't help regarding the codes. Have never experienced one

    2000 Guards Red 986

    46K.

While I was cleaning the engine bay and Throttle body, I noticed one pipe that was covered in what it look to be oil+dirt.

When I looked under the pipe, I could see a small puddle of oil. I do get smoke when I start the car but I don't believe they

are blue. Right now I have 2 CEL codes (P0430: Catalyst Efficiency Below, P0447: Evaporative Emission Control).

Is this oil/white smoke problem related to my CELs? or do I have a two different problem? (One for AOS and One for CELs)

Here are some pictures of the pipe.

Pipe is located at the passenger side.

    post-21861-1202794855_thumb.jpg

The Pipe in the middle of this image with a rubbed mark is actually covered in dirt+oil.

    post-21861-1202795176_thumb.jpg

Under the pipe there's more oil+dirt.

    post-21861-1202795322_thumb.jpg

And it didn't show up on this picture but where there is a leaf.. there is also a small puddle of engine oil.

  5. Has anyone experience Victor wheels like the one's in the link below.

http://www.ddswholesale.com/catalog/Victor...eels/Album2.htm I decided not to track my Boxter S so I am going to replace stock wheel with something like these with Nitto's tires. Any suggestion as what size to have on 19" wheels. The car is going to be a daily driver.

    Ben

Seems from lots of posts here and at other boards, 19" wheels don't seem to be very popular on Boxsters. Seems the 19's effect everything from ride comfort, rigidity and, besides the tires are alot more expensive.
  6. Hi,

I have a few questions, I got my '99 Boxster a few days ago and need some advice.

First, my dash displays the outside temp. does this mean my OBC is turned on?

Does a hard top add any safety?

What cup holder do you recommend?

I have the ac at the top then the radio then cd storage then a shelf on the center console, could I put the porsche cup holders in or not? Part # 000 044 801 91

Were is the battery and how do I access it?

Are the rear speakers worth it?

    Is the autotop worth it?

Any other easy but useful mods?

Why do some many people put polce scanners in there porsche's?

Did the '99 Boxster come with a motion sensor, red clip?

Any advice for a new Boxster owner?

    Thanks! :)

Enjoy your new Boxster. A couple of answers. No on the autotop. Battery is in the front under the black plastic covers. Need to buy the red clip. About 10bucks. I don't have nor need a cupholder. Hardtop is nice in cold weather climates, but doesn't add terribly to safety, in my opinion. Lots of great Boxster websites available for more information. Best advise is to drive them at least 6,000k per year and follow maintenance schedule. Watch out for "permagrin"!

  7. Have a bit of patience, mate, there's only six hours between your two posts!

Answer to 3: standard iso hole in the dash.

Don't know about the immobiliser stuff, hopefully someone will be along soon.

Sorry Im a bit ancy but I need to make a decision by tomorrow

    THanks

I also would not do this at 9K. Too many issues. If you look hard you can probably find a nicely maintained 97 for under 15K. Just my two cents worth.
  8. I recently picked up a 2004 C4S w/X51 and an after-market air intake system. After going through a drive-through car wash (with the car on), the check engine light came on for about 10 seconds following my exit AND there was a loud whistling noise coming from the engine bay. I noticed that there was a large amount of water vapor coming throught the grills above the engine. I figured the noise the just the water burning off the engine and whistling through the grills. But that wouldn't explain the check engine light or the general volume of the sound (which, besides whistling, sounded like a had a blow belt or something).

My after-market intake doesn't have a cover on it and I am starting to think water is getting into the engine via the air intake. The whistling and other, less describable noises go away after about 30 seconds and the car drives as if nothing happened.

Has anyone experienced this before? I am sure it is not normal and I am considering swapping to a different air intake that is covered (or for which this doesn't occur).

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

  9. 1. I would like to know what you personally use to catch the 9 qts. of oil as it drains...? (Seems like a awfull lot of oil for a cheapo lil' standard oil pan seing as most cars only use 4-5 qts...)

    2. How and what do you use to pour it into to keep from making a mess on your garage floor so that I can transport it to a oil recycling facility?

    3. What retailer has the best price for oil? Kragen? Napa?, WalMart? etc...

  10. Shortly looking for new rubber. Currently have Pirelli zeros on my 18" wheels with sports susp.

Any recommendations vis a vis rubber Co?? My own view on existing rubber is that they grip well but wear out more quickly than others....

Goodyear F1 GSD3's are great multipurpose tire. Also, the new RE050A Pole Positions (Bridgestone) are supposed to be awesome and significantly less expensive than the SO3's they replace! Both are excellent tires. Why pay more for MPS2's just because they are "Porsche Approved"!!

  11. Hello. I just bought a 2002 Carrera 4S and the warranty expired in April. Should I get the extended warranty?

The dealer charges me $2700 for 2 years or 100K miles. Covers everything except tear and wear stuff and suspension problems...

Is it worth it? Is it better to get my local Porsche mechanic? How reliable is this car. Are there any recalls?

What could be the worse that could break $$$$$$$.

Thanks in advance for the info.

    SGJ

The question of buying addtional warranty is a tough one. There are a number of after market warranties available. Most except warranty direct will not cover "wear and tear". I purchased 4 years or 48,000 coverage on my 2000 Boxster for about 2500. with 100 deductible per failure. Did more shopping and comparing before buying than I did when I was searching for my car.....

  12. Todd.....

Doesn't sound quite right. I also have a 2000 and the radio and lights will stay on after removing the key, but only for a few seconds. Are you exiting the vehicle at the same time or staying put with door closed? I have only had my Guards Red 2000 for 7 months. There are several features that I have never encountered with other vehicles. A thorough reading of the owners manual is a must. Good luck
