Boxster 987 Audio upgrade advise

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I have just purchased a boxster 987S (55 reg) triptronic and want to upgrade the stereo.

I used to have 986 boxster and I successfully upgraded the sound system, Replaced all factory speakers, added 6.5 door speakers, (all MB quart), high grade cabling + cross overs, added two amps (alpine v12), Stiffening capacitor, new head unit (Alpine 9855r + IPOD interface), got a fibre glass subwoofer enclosure (using Pioneer 10” slim line sub) made to fit in the passenger foot-well, was a really nice system.

Please give me a shout if you need advise on upgrading the sound system in the 986 boxster as I have a lot of experience doing this.

In the new Boxster I have a double din head unit, can this be easy changed to a single din? Is it the standard cables in the back of the head unit?

Is it an easy task to add an amp to the current (standard) head unit?

Also what sizes are the speakers in the door panel? And how do I remove them.

I am thinking that I may just upgrade the speakers in the door, add a new amp and change the head unit?

Has any one upgraded the sound system in the new shape boxster? If so any advise?

Many thanks

Sunil.

If you do not intend to keep any of the standard speakers or amps (if fitted) then there are plenty of options. I would suggest searching the electronics section of caymanclub.net planetporsche.net for ideas. a double din kenwood or pioneer sat nav will drop in and there are OEM or aftermarket fascia surrounds to make the finish look standard. The 987 uses the MOST fibre optics to control amplifers when the BOSE sound option is specified , otherwise the amplifier is driven from the speaker outputs if the sound packet plus has been specified. The BOSE system also uses different impeadnace for the speakers and subwoofer so retro fitting a new head unit requires a little more work.
