My '99 carrera has 70,000mi.

Just recently replaced alternator, water pump and polyrib belt.

Now hearing some belt noise at the rear...the idler pulleys and tensioner and accessory pulleys don't have significant play although their bearings are not as tight as the water pump and alternator..not sure if thats within spec even or not...should they be real tight too.

I noticed too however that if i turn water pump by hand it makes a slight squeak kind of noise...its brand new German part...bearing feels tight and good..no play..no leaks ..car runs like a champ...belt noise is worse when i rev the engine....

I don't know what to do..really don't feel like changing the water pump if there is no other fix..big job when u don't have anyone to help u...please help.

Thanks Dylan.

The squeak from the water pump may be considered normal as it the mechanical seal making the noise and nothing to worry about. Did you have the noise before replacing any of the above components?

You can't judge a failed idler pulley by the amount of "play" in the brng assembly unless it's massively excessive. I would first verify that the belt is routed correctly and that it indeed the correct belt size/length.

Does the belt tensioner move smoothly throughout it's range?
