Piston Rings, Oil Seperator

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm new to the forums but was wondering if any of you could help me with a problem. I've been a Porsche fanatic ever since i was a little kid and strarted actually saving up since i was seven years old. once I turned 17 i had about $17,000 saved up. my dad loaned me another $8,000 and i brought a 2001 Porsche Boxster. It's the basic black 2.7 litre model. Nothing fancy about it. about 40,000 miles on it, but still, I considered myself the luckiest guy ever. After only driving it for a week, the engine warning light came on. Being the gearhead i am, i took it to a friend with an OBDII reader n found out that my oil sealant ring on the piston is fried ( my two compression rings seem to be fine ). Now, when the car sits still, oil leaks into the piston and once i start it up, oil is burned and a huge white cloud of exhaust comes out. I've stopped driving it since then but I'm trying to get it fixed as soon as possible. I scheduled an appointment with the local porsche dealership for sept. 9 at 10:30 am but I kno they will charge me way more than i can afford. other than replacing the piston rings, would i have to change anything else like the plugs or gasket heads? or would those be fine? i do have some basic tools such as ring expander and compressor and a cylinder hone but i'm afraid to actually try to do it myself. i kno a full piston ring set will cost me around $140 and i can risk doing it my self or i can take it to the dealer and have them do it for around $2000. any other suggestions on what can i do. i'm so mad just having that beauty sitting in my driveway. much thanks for your time

Year - 2001

Model - Boxster (2.7 liter)

Miles - 50,500

If the rings are the cause - then the whole engine needs to come out, and the engine cases will have to come apart - which basically means a whole engine gasket kit. While you are in there, you may see other items that need attention - valves, pistons, bearings etc. There are alot of dimensional tolerance checks that need to be done as you reassemble the engine - and this requires some special tooling.

Maybe a solution is to get a used engine with lower miles/better history and simply replace it..........keep your original engine - or even exchange it with a used/remanufactured one to keep your cost down as much as possible.
