Instrument Cluster Programming

Recommended Posts

I bought a new instrument cluster for my 911 Coupe and installed it myself. I made the first available appointment with my dealer to have the cluster reprogrammed with the VIN and transfer the mileage from my previous cluster. However, after trying the programming, the dealer told me they couldn't put the mileage in because it had already been coded. The dealer said apparently that after the first 100 miles on the odometer, you cannot change the mileage (I had 200 miles on the odometer). Seems the dealer was not aware of this and I wasn't aware either. Does anyone know if it's now possible to change the mileage in this situation?

Once a cluster has over 62 miles or 100 km it is locked. A PST2 cannot change it.

But there are several aftermarket companies that can set the mileage to whatever you want displayed. I doubt however if the aftermarket can also put the VIN in your cluster.

Some people do not know the VIN is also in the instrument cluster. Guess it keeps some people honest with an electronic cluster.

  • 11 months later...

actually heres a question from left field. My cousin is looking at getting a 99 Boxster. He has had a quick look over the vehicle and it states 60000K on the ODO however my cuz is of the mind that it may have done a little more like 85 K. I understand that BMW has the original mileage locked into the ECU so if they do a diagnostic they can bring up the original mileage that way it can discount any clusters that have been changed to lower mileage. Does the boxster have the same thing.

I ask this after reading that the odo's can be changed....

thanks in advance

On the 996/986 mileage is not in the ECU. However, engine operating hours are. If you know the hours you can get a rough estimate of what the mileage should be.

But if the ECU has been changed then the estimate will not work. My ECU was changed a few months ago on my 8 year old Boxster so my operating hours started as zero with the new ECU. The old ECU had 1,622 operating hours.
