  1. I finally started my installation. I delayed it for weeks because I was sort of dreading it, and also because I couldn't find my radio code...which in fact was dumb because I learned the '03+ system doesn't have codes!

Anyway, my car is in pieces right now and I'm pleased that nothing was that tough.

Could someone help me with the power cable? I understand I need to tap fuse B7, but how is this done? Do I need to pull out the whole fuse assembly and splice a wire from behind? I think that's pretty much my only question in this process.

Charlie, my stalk assembly just shipped so it should be here soon and I'll be preparing to do this hack. I was wondering if there was any wisdom you might share or things to watch out for. Any references to the guides you found most useful, comments on routing the wires, anything really that would help make the process go more smoothly would be most welcome.

    Congratulations on getting it done!

    Chris.

I completed my install on a 2003 Boxster S last weekend and it went smoothly just following the instructions as posted. And it works as promised. The hardest part was getting someone to activate the cruise and obc.

    Thx everyone. Andy

  2. Hi Tool Pants.

I took my '03 Boxster S to my local dealer today to turn on the OBC and cruise before I did the retrofit for both. The dealer was able to turn on the Cruise , but couldn't turn on the OBC.

I watched as he accessed the dme control unit to ensure that the order type was correct as a 986320, which it was. After that step, he tried to go into the instrument cluster to turn on the OBC but couldn't access it to code for OBC.

What did/didn't we do right? Is there a step he missed? Can u provide pics and instructions of the process/screens to follow so we don't screw up again?

    Thx..

After changing the order type did he recode it and then do another control module search? I don't think you can enable it until it has been recoded and the module search has been repeated.

    Chris.

The step he missed was doing the control module search. It now works. Thx.

  3. Ruff used to change the instrument panel on the 3400S to the 996 panel. If you call them they may be able to provide some tips.

    Thx ToolPants and everyone else.

It worked. I had a local small P shop transfer all the vehicle info from the boxster cluster to the 996 cluster using his PST2 and now all is good. Local P dealer didn't want to touch it. Said it wouldn't work.

Radio works again and I have the improved OBC display (my opinion) visible.

    Eureka!

  4. 2003 was the first year for MOST and I always wondered if you could use a pre MOST cluster. A user radio code was eliminated when MOST came out.

I always thought the cluster would work, but I wondered how you would get the radio to work.

I think the codes in the radio and cluster are based on the VIN. I would see if you can erase the 996 VIN in the cluster and put in your VIN. Or, erase your VIN in the radio and put in the 996 VIN.

I'm guessing, because I do not know anyone who has back dated a cluster.

Thx. I 'll try that and see if it works. I'll let everyone know.

    Thx

  5. I have always wondered if you could do this swap.

Your radio is looking for the code in the cluster, which it cannot find since you replaced the cluster.

The speedo, tach and the rest seem to be working ok. So can I put the code into the cluster so the radio will work? If so, then how?

And does anyone have a wiring diagram for the 996 cluster so I can remove the offending pin?

    Thx

  6. I've purchased a cluster from an '02 996 and installed it in my 03 Boxster S. I've disconnected the extra 2 gauges - voltmeter and oil, but am still getting an error message on the OBC screen - "indicator failure" - which also displays an oil spout diagram with the error message. I believe relates to the oil sensors.

Can someone help with a wiring diagram for the 996 cluster so I can disconnect the pin going in that sends the error message.

Also, now the radio won't play with the new cluster> I get a "Porsche Protect" message on the radio? Any suggestions?

Other than that, it all pretty well works fine. Thx

  7. Abe's 2003 was turned on before he did the retrofit. The two 2003s we did were turned on weeks before we had time to get together to do the retrofit. But on the other hand, you can do the retrofit first and then have it turned on.

I like it turned on first. I test to make sure it is working before we put all the parts back together in case we put a wire in a wrong slot or the connectors are not properly seated. I can't test if it is not turned on.

So you do not get confused, Loren has the old style instrument cluster and that is why he can see the temp display without the retrofit. You have a 2003 and with 2001-2004 you will see nothing until the retrofit is done.

Jonhale from the UK board was asking me for part numbers the other day so you better hurry up. He might beat you to it.

  8. Are you talking about the A/C Heater controls? on a US/Canada car?

If so, the readout in the A/C controls can only be changed with a PST2 (or PIWIS) tester.

If you are talking about the instrument cluster (on a US/Canada car) it can not be done.

    Loren,

I want to get my dealer to do the switch from Fahrenhuit to Celsius on the AC/Heater control. Can you please provide instruction for the PST2 process. He didn't know how to do it. I have an 03 Boxster S.

    Thx

  9. On '03 cars the cruise control stalk connects directly to the instrument cluster and not to the DME and it looks a much simpler job. There is a coding option in the cluster for enabling cruise, and there is also an option in the DME to enable, although I don't know if both would need to be activated. I don't know anyone who has done it on an '03 but on paper it looks like a piece of cake (famous last words!)

Just a point of interest - Ed B's instructions above also apply for 996's fitted with DME7.2.

    Hi Richard,

Can you please help me out. Iam trying to do the retrofit of the 4 stalk in my 03 Boxster S. Where do the wires run to for the obc and the cruise functions? I'm confused with allthe different info out here. I assume I still need the VW wires and BMW connector?

    Thx Andy
