  1. When I bought my car it had the original Michelin Pilot Sports and they were terrible but that could've been because they had 12k miles on them and were 4 years old. I have since replaced them with the Goodyear F1's and for the first 500-1000 miles the high performance traction was pretty disappointing. Ever since I got past the 1000 mile mark they keep getting better and better and I am now impressed. Keep in mind they have a 280 treadwear rating and you can get much better tires for dry traction, but for everyday driving and a couple autocrosses they have been quite good. Regarding the Cooper tires you refer to my friend has them on his M3 and once he got past the "break in" period of 500-1000 miles he has been very happy with them in regards to performance driving.
  2. How can I tell whether I have a M490 or M680? All I know is I have a 2002 S with the CDR-220 head unit.
  3. Where did you find the 6x40 from a 996? Ebay? Is there any other alternative other than to pay an arm and a leg through Porsche?
  4. In my opinion it would be nice to start with some optional kits that are upgrades based on the few OEM audio options available to the Boxster. In my case I have the typical dash and door speakers and have no rear speakers. I want more surround sound and some better low end. I don't have the patience anymore to build custom stuff anymore so I simply want to pay for a kit that adds the rear speakers and adds low end. If the kit requires a new amp or head unit than so be it. This is where you may be able to differentiate levels of kits. Level 1 simply adds rear speakers, Level 2 adds new speakers in the door for better low end, Level 3 adds a sub and requires a new amp and so on and so on. One thing I like about buying a Dell computer is they make it very easy to analyze upgrades in terms of features and pricing. If you can accomplish that with audio upgrades for a specific car than I would probably be one of your first customers. Kind of the same way Tire Rack takes the car that you have and lists all the potential products.
  5. I will give Porsche props for this one. They continued to review my top replacement and offered $500 to help with the cost of a new top. I will gladly take it and purchase a top with the glass window instead of dealing with a plastic window that would've come with the top if Porsche covered it under warranty. Yes, I know it is cheaper for Porsche but at the same time I would've ended up buying a top with a glass window anyway (because I hate having a mile long list of dos and donts for the plastic window) so I find this to be a win-win situation. Sorry for the identical post from the other website, but I wanted to make sure I communicated my satisfcation with the way Porsche handled this issue.
  6. Whenever I turn the car off there continues to be a constant clicking/ticking noise coming from underneath the rear of the car. It sounds like the noise of a hot metal cooling down. I'm assuming that it is coming from the exhaust but it seems a little loud and annoying. Has anyone else had a similar noise? Last night I noticed it when the engine was running and it was louder than the engine at idle.
  7. I thought I would move this over here to see if someone has some input. I have a 2002 S and the warranty expires in August. I can see a slight crack starting to form in my convertible window and wanted to know if this would be covered under warranty? Anybody? Thanks! Sammy
  8. I'm embarassed to say that I purchased one of the Tornado inlet air swirlers. What a waste of money. I'm ashamed that with all the car books I've read and all the training I went through when working for an automotive company, I stilled forked out $30 for a worthless piece of doody. No, my mileage did not increase. It probably decreased because of the extra 1-2 lbs it may have added to the overall vehicle weight.
  9. I really think we're looking at the nature of the beast. Wide, grippy tires with a suspension built for max velocity handling combined with a weird steering system. It's awesome!!! With a stiff suspension a car will be tossed around on bumps and then the tires will pull whatever direction the shift is going. I had similar experience with a Lincoln LS with the sport package (17" 225's) as well as a Dodge Dakota with really wide tires (275's).
  10. I have noticed this kind of pull on a number of vehicles that I have owned with either wide tires or aggressive suspension. The key is that it pulls in both directions which indicates that it probably isn't an alignment issue. I also experience this pull with my S and attribute it to the tires and suspension. I would imagine the variable steering is also part of the problem as it is new to me and I'm not use to the feel.
  11. I have a 2002 S with 13,000 miles and I noticed a crack starting to form in the rear plastic window. Is this covered under my manufacturer's warranty? The warranty doesn't expire until August.
  12. Do you use the typical car wash soap on everything except the top? How do you clean the bird dooky off of the top (hasn't happened yet, but I'm a realistic person)? Any awesome products out there to clean the wheels? I've always used the Meguir's stuff in the pink bottle, but seeing that this is a Porsche I didn't know if I had to click my heels, kneel down and pray, and then use some sort of magic potion you can only get through Porsche.
  13. I must admit that I haven't read the manual from cover to cover. I am wondering if you can put these cars through an automatic car wash? I have the 18" wheels which is also of concern to me. Any thoughts? Does the manual state anything about automatic car washes? Thanks!
  14. Thank you for the responses! I'm glad you have the gas gauge option in your vehicles... :D I scheduled a service visit to have it looked at. It's under warranty, so it's worth having them take a look at it. What!?! You mean this car runs at something other than WOT??? Why don't you curse at me and tell me to drive a Buick!!! (Just kidding for any Buick owners out there) ;) The hiccups are under smooth acceleration at low RPM's so I think I'm safe in assuming that it's not my driving style.
  15. Anyone??? I know I'm not the only guy here with a gas gauge in my car... I'm also pretty sure that my car isn't the only one that starts out with a cold engine... ;)
