  1. :o Hello, I have a MY2003 996 cab with PCM 2.0 version. I would like to upgrade to 2.1 but porsche dealer offer to charge 450 € !!!!

do you have an idea 2.1 downloads with european maps ???

    any help would be great.

You can start by reading this thread: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2012

You PCM2 system is v2.0 and you want to upgrade to v3.0. PCM2.1 is the DVD based system found on newer models (cayenne, 997 etc). I think Europe is covered by 3 CDs - which country do you needs maps for?

  2. You don't need any special tools - standard hex wrenches will do just fine. It is a 2-person job since it's quite bulky (not heavy). I am not sure but I think there are 2 different mounts depending on the year - have you checked the hardtop is compatible with the car?

I used mine for the first year and this winter I took it to my local porsche dealer to adjust it because it was making way too much noise. The result was equally annoying so I took it off and I doubt I will ever try it again - Athens roads are just too rough for 911s with a hardtop!

Yes, I did check it and it's off of an '02 996, so it should fit a '99 996 as well. Did you have the new mounts installed after the noises? Apparently that's a common problem with the old mounts.

I am almost certain my car has the latest mounts. It's been quite some time since I checked though, and I cannot remember if there is an easy way to tell.

  4. I have been getting a fault which reads something like "top not in upright position" or something similar. It is not consistent and it appers without having opened or closed the top (the top is closed). The car is MY03 996 cabrio. I suspect it is a problem with the sensor that detects whether the top is closed or not. Does anyone know where this sensor is positioned so I can try cleaning it up or replacing it?

  5. According to my local Porsche dealer (Greece) they are expecting a new set of CD-based maps anytime now. This is going to be the first release since 2006. I am not sure how accurate this info is but I thought you might want to know. If someone can cross-check this with their local Porsche dealer it would be great.

  6. I seem to recall Quaife uses discs and clutches which usually make the car understeer more since it's "always locked" but I know they're used alot. Roughly how much and how difficult is it to install?

Quaife LSD does not use discs or clutches and it will last forever (http://www.quaife.co.uk/What-is-a-Quaife-ATB-differential). Regarding installation I am not sure on the 911 but usually it is a matter of replacing the inner part of the differential.

  7. Due to the heavy tail, the 911 behaves very well when oversteering even without an LSD. It is not like an M3 but compared to other cars without LSD the 911 is top. If this is such a major concern for you though, I suggest you buy the newest 911 you can afford and if you don't like how it power slides you can always add a Quaife aftermarket LSD which is probably the best LSD you can get (BMW M-differential excluded).

  8. I just installed one of the ebay knock-offs and I have to say I am quite happy with it. The gears are a bit harder to engage but I guess this is normal. Another thing I noticed and maybe related to what is discussed here is that now when in gear the lever is not 100% stable - it rocks left-right and forward-backward a tiny bit (maybe 1-2mm each direction). I cannot remeber how the stock lever was, so I wonder if this rocking is because of the short-shift and whether there is something I can do to get it fixed!
