  1. Folks, my C 2 1999 has an a/c which, I feel, is not longer pumping out air with a temperature equal to the setting on the dial. What is the procedure? I assume there is no longer FREON in this car. What are the steps I should take?? HarryR ( happy to see some sun in California FINALLY!!!)
  2. The article appeared in the USA TODAY Newspaper dated May 19th 2005. Page 3B Maybe you can find it on their Web site. The article reads" Toyota comes out on top again in Quality Study". Top ranging Premium Sports car : Nissan 350Z Cheers HarryR
  3. Hey Folks, did you'all see the 2005 Brand Quality ratings for 2005.? The criteria are : How many problems per 100 new vehicles are being reported. Here are some of the numbers: How many car companies participated : 36 Who won : Lexus with 81 defects per 100 cars What was the industry average : 118 defects What did Porche do : Ranks 32th together with Volkswagen ( so you could say Porsche was 33th in the ranking with 149 defects per 100 cars) Who did Porsche beat : Land Rover ( with 149 points) , Mazda (with 149 points) and Suzuki ( with 151 points). I would suggest Porsche came a close last. This really sux but then, with all the problems we are seeing this is not a surprise. But here is some good news. The new Ford GT had a recall and guess what is in the recall ??? RMS!! Cheers HarryR ( mightily disappointed)
  4. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Western General was the company that refused coverage for me, my car had done 32,000 miles and was 4 years old.. It was around $3,600 for 3 yrs . The insurance was done by Rector in Burlingame and 30 days later I got their ( Western General) refusal in the mail ( I did get my money back). No explanation was given. HarryR
  5. I just looked at the Warrantydirect.com website. Clicking on the right buttons ( California, 1999,Porsche, 911 ) the system comes back " We do not have a coverage for this car". There must be a reason for that... you think it's because their are no problems / with this car and it does not need extended warranty?? :soapbox:
  6. And you can expect to replace them regularly. They are aiding the air discharge for the cooler fans so I believe. At least that's where all the hot radiator heat is coming from when the fans are on. HarryR C2 1999 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Got it wrong ( did not read it all). Those are the flaps behind the front wheels. HarryR

  8. Hey congrats. I guess it wasn't planned, but then again they never are. I think a rear facing one will only fit properly in the front seat, but you'd have to get the airbag de-activation kit. You may find a rear facing that fits in the back, but it would take up so much leg room, that you wouldn't be able to fit a front passenger. I have the Britax Roundabout forward facing (~$180) in the back and it fits perfectly. Don't buy one from Porsche unless you want to spend $500 on a car seat. Britax was the OEM for the forward facing Porsche car seat a couple of years back. Not sure who they use now. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I also have a Brittax in the back of the 996. It cost me new about 70 bucks. The one Ihave is for a small child say 2 years and up, rather than for a new born baby. The back of the seat can come off when the child is bigger and it looks than like a booster seat. The problem with the Porsche is that the seat width in the back is very narrow. My Brittax seat can be adjusted width-wise from about 12 inches or so up to about 17 inches. A perfect fit. If anybody wantys additio0anl information I will dig up the particular model etc. The Porsche seat made by Brittax that has the airbag disabling feature was discontinued for the 996 quite some time ago. That is a seat for the front of the car.
  9. Is n't there a difference frequency spacing between Europe and USA?? HarryR
  10. Loren, Jeff, It's a deal but please let me know when that is going to take place, seems I miss too much of the fun. Cannot wait to stir the engine with that stick in the upcoming Autocross sessions in Candlestick Park in June.

  12. To say that I am thrilled to find out that Porsche is now blocking access to their preferred/ suggested tires is an understatement. Now there has to be an opportunity for someone to make a buck out of this and providing a real service to a large community of Porsche owners. How difficult would it be to find a tyre manufacturer who is prepared to supply the handful of tire sizes we all use with a tire that meets our expectations for road use. Granted we all have our favorites and we all have a different driving style but the difference in tires, for the majority of us comes down to , how long to last , tire road noise, wet and dry weather capabilities, costs and unrestricted availability. Manufacturers such as Kumho, Hoosier and others would most likely be interested in putting a package together for us Porsche fanatics. If I would be in the car business ( what ever that would mean) I certainly would look at this and see if I could build a business around it. Let me think, 20,000 Porsches in the USA , each 2 new tires every year ( or a new set every 2 years) at 200 bucks per tire. Sounds like a lot of potential to me. Markets are created this way.. Cheers HarryR
  13. I would buy one at a price below 200 dollars. HarryR C2 1999
  14. Porsche's own short throw shifter seems to have a warning on it that states that the shifting with a cold engine may be difficult. It that the same with this B&M shifter kit?? If this is not the case I would be interested in "investing" in such a kit. I have been reading these threads and I am still seeing the same issue popping up regularly. What is the secret or is Porsche literature correct.? HarryR C 2 1999
  15. Folks , I found some interesting information with regard to changes in car behavior that you can expect when you change certain settings on your car. NOTE: This came from a Kart site so it has some Kart specific information , however , the rest seems to be relevant to us all. Tech Tips Chassis Performance If Kart is loose in rear (oversteer) 1. Wider front track 2. Narrower front tires 3. Narrower rear tires 4. Wider rear tires 5. Higher air pressure in front 6. Lower air pressure in rear 7. Move weight to rear 8. Loosen rear bumper 9. Increase frame flex If Kart is pushing (won't turn) 1. Narrower front track 2. Wider front tires 3. Wider rear track 4. Narrower rear tires 5. Lower air pressure in front 6. Higher air pressure in rear 7. Move weight to front 8. Tighten rear bumper 9. Decrease frame flex Air Pressure Higher 1. Less bite (looser) 2. Reduce bicycling 3. Less sidewalk flex 4. Tire will wear in the center 5. Sme effect as a darder tire Lower 1. More bite 2. Reduce loose condition 3. More sidewalk flex 4. Tire wears on outside edges 5. Same effect as a softer tire Track Width Front Narrower 1. Front will bite more 2. Steer easier 3. Rear will bite less Rear Narrower 1. Rear will bite more 2. Front will bite less (push more) 3. Lift tire easier (less axle flex) Front Wider 1. Front will bite less 2. Steer harder 3. Transfer more weight 4. Rear will bite more Rear Wider 1. Rear will bite less 2. Front will bite more (less push) 3. More axle flex Hubs Short 1. More front bite 2. Transfers more weight Long 1. More rear bite 2. Transfers less weight Have fun HarryR C2 1999
  16. Ahhh!! Now it makes sense, the fans are cooling the condensers too. As I am in California, I always drive with a/c on ( never noticed the fans coming on soo early / soon after starting the engine, of course I understand that they would come on when the engine is pretty hot). Thanks to the both of you!! HarryR c2 1999
  17. Now that would be an interesting system. I assume you have a compressor providing you with the "cold" air ( ala fridge/freezer system)and I would assume you have the internal fans ( in the dash) that would circulate that cooled, cold air. I would also assume that the two fans in the front are there to cool the water in the front radiators ( and maybe move the air away around the brakes although that air would heat up the brakes rather than cool it?) Today is Tax day and not April fools day. HarryR c2 1999
  18. Folks, I noticed a few days ago that I had a major cooling fan noise in the front . Now I have noticed the fans are on even with the engine pretty cold ( say a few minutes after I start the engine). I checked and both fans are blowing air at a very high rate of volume out in front of the front wheels. I also noticed about 1 week ago that the warning light ( rear spoiler light) went on for some time and then switched itself off ( have not seen any unusual behavior ie it come on at start and goes out within less than one minute). I am mentioning that just in case there is a connection. What can be wrong?? HarryR C 2 1999 coupe
  19. An old trick to figure out if your shocks are shot is to simply press ( with your hand and putting your body weight on) the body down above each of the wheels. If the car rebounds more than once, you're in for new shocks. Then stand in front of your car , spread your arms and grab the bumper and try to shake the car from left to right Do the same in the back .If it's loose and/or makes noises , buy new shocks. HarryR C2
  20. I almost think that the N- rating system has been put in place so Porsche can retain / maintain an exclusivity and charge us "purists" for the privilege. HarryR C2 1999
  21. Sharkster, thanks. As I have a 3.4L that would work for me. Have you heard of any problems resulting of this flashing? Like not passing the California SMOG test ?? HarryR
  22. I have sport seats in my 1999 C2 and I love them because they do fit extremely close around your back and as I like to drive leaning back with stretched arms it is really comfortable around the shoulders too. Now I hear there are 2 different sizes, one being 1 12/2 inch wider than the other one but that could be a rumor.. I do believe that the sport seat is somewhat more narrow than the standard leader seat. HarryR
  23. Folks, has anybody had their C2 (3.4 liter) flashed by Akkurat in Menlo Park and if so, what where the cost and how many additional HP are supposed to be produced as a result?? Any comments good or bad?? HarryR C2 1999
  24. I would suggest to take the car in to the dealership and have them verify that it is not an potential RMS problem. If they say it's not such an issue you will be feeling better. If it turns out to be an RMS in the making you have sufficient time to start rattling the cages and get some agreement as to whom is going to cough up the money for the repair. The quicker you have the information on record at the dealer ship , the better. Good luck. HarryR C99- dry and running great
  25. I had a leak ( slow drip ). Turned out to be the oil/air separator boot which leaked. It also triggered the engine light. Boot was 30 bucks or so, labor about 600 bucks. Now all is clean and dry I may add. HarryR C2 1999
