  1. Simple Green is a great product . Be aware of the fact that the standard Simple Green MAY NOT be used on aircraft ( aluminum) because UNLESS it has been washed off TOTALLY it MAY induce corrosion. As such they now have a new product called " Extreme Simple Green ", " aircraft and precision Cleaner. Meets Boeing spec D6-17487P. Non corrosive .

Check the Website www.simplegreen.com There was a special offer. One full 32 fl.oz. bottle FOR FREE a month or so ago. Call them on 1-800-228-0709

  2. Not sure about the logic... They are a limited edition. So if you are prepared to keep the car for 20 years or so and not drive the hell out of it, you could see the benefits. It's supposed the best of the best of the type.

6 of one , half a dozen of the others.

However, a turbo always seems to always attract a lot of passion...and can be sold more easily.

So if you buy with as plan to sell, a turbo might be the right deal..

    Cheers HarryR

  3. I will try that one but I had the locking mechanism for the front deck lid replaced last year and my hood is flush. I will check that out. The sound is indeed a squealing sound but it sounds more as if it is coming from a friction like a brake pad having continuous contact with the rotor, it sounds definitely as if it is coming from the back. As I said, the car has to move, the volume increases somewhat from 30 miles onwards ( that's the speed at which I start hearing the sound), I have observed no leaks, or funny/burning/hot smells, no smoke of any kind and so I guess I will keep on driving until I figure out what it is or until something changes that lets me pinpoint the issue.

    Thanks

  4. Folks, my car started to make a whisling noise. Here is when it happens:

    1/ Over 30 miles / hour

2/ Independent from engine speed and /or clutch engaged or not

    3/ louder when speed increases

4/ no change with or without a/c engaged

5/ No change when braking or not

    6/ no change when turning

The sound is a medium pitched constant sound, almost as if a brake pad is touching the rotor but it does not change if I push the brakes. It does get louder when speed increases and is audible from within. Noiae doeas not seem to be louder outside the car ie driving with windows down does not increase the loudness of the sound.

    Idea's??

  5. I had a look around the Weissach web site and I found this picture. I particularly like this wing because of the crease that runs horizontally between the rear lights.

Does anybody know about another wing (from a different manufacturer) that looks like that and can be purchased separately at a reasonable cost? This the first wing that I actually like because it looks like a factory designed and installed item.

  6. The Short Shifter is IN!!! My thanks to Loren who single handedly ripped and replaced the shifter in less than one hour.

The B@M shifter looks and feels like a real well machined part . The original Porsche shifter looks like a Yugo part held together with plastic Yugo parts. The instructions coming with the shifter actually were correct , a pleasant surprise but Loren has developed some short cuts and work arounds that eliminate potential problems with adjustments that might be needed after installation . The net of it is , there are no adjustments needed ( provided the original shifter was adjusted correctly).

Performing a quick test drive to ensure that the shifter works correctly before "buttoning up " the console is a must.

So, I climbed in the car and engaged the reverse gear however, it seemed it was not there, the throw seemed too short and there was not the little "feel" ( that little notch that tells you that you have pushed the level as far as it will go) that the gear was engaged.

Turns out that the lever had indeed engaged the reverse gear, it was in and working perfectly. The lever moves nice, firmly and notchy thru all the gears.

As I have read now many times in the Forum. It's one of the better mods, especially for the money.

Loren, thank you, a donation is on the way.

Also attending was George C. who looked on while Loren performed the deed and subsequently did his swap, also in about on hour. George obviously has been using a screwdriver a few times :) George's Carrera 4 Cab, yellow, surely looked the part especially when I was chasing him on the 101 through San Jose at speeds slightly over the speed limit. Just to test the shifters of course. :)

  7. Carlos, yes the A/C problem has been fixed, it was a stuck expansion valve, they recharged the system and it's delivering absolute freezing cold air it this point. They also checked all the electric fans for correct function AND cleaned the leaves etc from the air intakes. I am watching the temps and if I feel that the system is over loaded ( running too hot ie needle over or to the right of the zero in 180 in the gauge) I will certainly think about it again. Interestingly, I have not yet seen the extraction fan in the engine cover lid come on. More to come I am sure.

Some interesting titbit I picked up somewhere else on the same subject....

It seems that certain car manufacturers have decided that the temp gauge is not much more than an idiot light ie , cold, warm and TOO hot ( light goes on) and that the temp needle basically moves from low to the middle and stays there unchanged until the engine overheats, in which case the needle with go to the red sector ( equals the idiot light setting). This seems to be in an attempt to pacify folks and reduce the amount of calls the dealers get with " my engione runs hot " concerns because "the needle moved" . Interesting..

    HarryR

The fan on the engine lid is not for air extraction, but is an intake fan. It draws cooler air into the engine throught the lid when the engine compartment gets above 180F. You would NOT want to draw air out through the id as this would increase the engine temperature.

Of course, you are right on the subject of the fan in the engine deck lid.... my mistake.

  9. I think the wheels on that Cab look great. But if it would be me, I would be looking to get rims with a MAJOR lip front and back. That, in my mind gives a much enhanced looking side view and frankly, I feel that a wheel looks much more balanced if the inner part (spokes and lug nut part) are more towards the middle of the rim rather than look like an "endplate" with holes for cooling or looks. My 2 cents.

  10. dvdude, it won't be a problem as i have done it. however, i wouldn't expect ur amp 2 last very long as i fried one in like a yea and a bit.

    Any idea why?

no clue....my deck is rated at 50wattx4, the amp is at 45x6 and the speakers r 45 watt. maybe just bad luck the amp went..or maybe the amp didn't like the deck. 'm not much of an audio guy...i just kno what sounds good, and get someone else 2 do the install work lol

I have a Nissan Maxima with a Bose system, I had a 300 ZX TT with a Bose system and I do like them ( in the car) . The issue I have with powered speakers is the expense when something blows up ( and believe me it does blow up) and in general with the difficulty in making any changes to the whole or part of the system. That's not customer friendly...

    Cheers

  11. Folks, these concepts are very well understood in the aviation engine business were you can buy pre-oilers to "squirt under pressure" oil through the engine so that when you start it ,you have less or almost zero metal to metal contact because oil will have dripped down from the moving parts and left them basically bare.

It also is a fact that these engines will generally only attain TBO ( Time between Overhaul ) IF the engine has been run OFTEN and ( funnily enough) HARD.

That means flying several times per week , such as in flying school use. FYI generally TBO is 2,000 hours or 12 years whichever comes first ,after which you will need to disassemble the engine, inspect the parts and replace to overhaul specs ( or new if you want to spend the money), reassemble, run for 50 hours on mineral oil to seat and then change to straight weight oil or multi viscosity oil. For aviation, as you are generally flying up in cold air there is a huge disagreement as to which oil is the best. These engines are generally 360 cubic inch , 4 cylinders, flat four and air cooled , the larger engines are up to 540 cubic inch and have 6 pots. And so you get an idea... they most always run at 70% to 100% of power. You Porsche engine will generally run at 25 to 30 percent of maximum power. Porsche built such a 360 cubic inch engine for the Mooney aircraft and that engine worked very well indeed, unfortunately they decided to get out of the business and I believe that, it this point in time, almost all of the engines have been replaced ( on Porsche's cost for a great deal I may add) by LyCo or Continental engines.

But..in general. oil will remain on the moving parts for several days before it's all dried up or dripped down into the oil pan, so the best thing to do for your car is to use it as your daily driver, fire her up, keep the revs down until the engine is HOT and let her rip from then onward.

    Cheers

  12. I don't know if this helps but I also have a C2 1999 and my A/c just did not chill. Investigation by Carlsen in Redwood City showed that the expension valve was not working. The part number is 99657392901 and together with some o-rings that valve was about 180 bucks. They had to empty the a/c system and refill it which cost additional. The total job took abour 3 hours or so.The air is now ICE COLD!!

  13. PS Loren, I just bought a B@M short shifter today ( eBay at $ 199.00 plus freight). I will be looking for your help   :-)

    Harry,

I am also getting the B&M very soon. Let me know if you are going to do the DIY installation. I would like to drop by to help and watch if you don't mind.

    George

George, I have 2 left hands so I am afraid I would not be safe in attempting the installation. Graciously, Loren has suggested he can help ( I hoop he still remembers :-) ). I still need to get that organized. Send me your contact info and I will talk with you as soon as I know when this "event" will take place. Maybe you could attend... email hroussar@yahoo.com

This morning I visited Carlsen in Redwood City and talked with Brian H. . They are also seeing to a leak I seem to have in my a/c system. Expensive repair OUGH!! Brian is taking good care of me . Thanks B.!!

But.... they had 2 GT3's with standard manual shifter and one Turbo Cab with the Short shifter ( factory) installed and the difference is AMAZING. Yes , this much more notchy and it needs more effort to change gears but it turns the car even more into a real DRIVERS machine... I tried Loren's shortshifter( in his C2 ) a while back and that is AS GOOD AS the Porsche version , maybe even slightly better. I am sold. It reminds me of my DeTomaso Pantera a while back... actually a LONG time ago.

I also met Carlos there and saw his Carrera. The car is going fast standing still. Very nice ..in english english... Bloody nice indeed.

    Cheers

  14. Folks, I am contemplating to have a 3rd radiator added to my C2 ( 1999) and I am wondering :

1/ what does the radiator cost?

2/ what is involved in the installation?

3/ how much would installation cost

4/ what temperature drop could one expect compared with the stock 2 radiators?

The reason? I feel that the engine ( here in California) is running pretty hot ( gauge is indicating between the 8 and the zero of the (180) number and sometimes goes just on top of the zero number.

    Cheers

  15. One data point:  I've owned a '68 911 (280,000 miles, 2 engine rebuilds), a '63 SC Cabriolet (80,000 miles, 2 engine rebuilds), a '70 914 (120,000 miles, no rebuilds), and currently an '04 GT3 with 12,000 miles.  The '68 911 broke 3 rocker arms when the timing chain tensioner failed (at 10K miles).  That car had no other issues (but that one was a BIG one).  The 356 was a wonderfully fun car with many minor issues.  The 914 had several issues (most serious was a battery location that caused the battery to be flooded whenever it rained, overflowing acid...)  The GT3 (bought new, 10 months old now) has zero defects.  I think Porsche is making forward progress in both performance and quality (again, only my direct experience).

The article appeared in the USA TODAY Newspaper dated May 19th 2005. Page 3B Maybe you can find it on their Web site. The article reads" Toyota comes out on top again in Quality Study".

  16. Hey Folks, did you'all see the 2005 Brand Quality ratings for 2005.?

The criteria are : How many problems per 100 new vehicles are being reported.

Here are some of the numbers:

How many car companies participated : 36

Who won : Lexus with 81 defects per 100 cars

What was the industry average : 118 defects

What did Porche do : Ranks 32th together with Volkswagen ( so you could say Porsche was 33th in the ranking with 149 defects per 100 cars)

Who did Porsche beat : Land Rover ( with 149 points) , Mazda (with 149 points) and Suzuki ( with 151 points).

I would suggest Porsche came a close last.

This really sux but then, with all the problems we are seeing this is not a surprise.

But here is some good news. The new Ford GT had a recall and guess what is in the recall ??? RMS!!

    Cheers

    HarryR ( mightily disappointed)
