  1. On my honeymoon I left my car for 3 weeks and it had no problems starting up. I didn't disconnect the battery either. Just let it sit. ;) Good luck! -td
  2. I have a MY00 C2 that is having the engine replaced at 59,XXX miles. Any thoughts on how a new engine affects resale? Will this be a plus (i.e., new engine under warranty = good deal) or a minus (car needed new engine = stay away)? If it adds any value, any guestimate how much it helps? Thanks, Tom
  3. Loren, Any suggestions of where to order a crate engine from? Thanks, Tom
  4. I encountered the exact same symptoms: CEL, rough idle, blinking CEL at low RPM, and sometimes a backfire. It was diagnosed by a lay person as a possible spark plug coil pack of some sort. At the shop, it was properly diagnosed as a cam actuator solenoid. The repair is estimated at 10 hours. I am not able to do these things on my own, so I wish you all the luck in the world on your DIY. My car should be ready by Friday... -td
  5. Loren, Is this the right part? http://e-partssales.com/Merchant2/merchant...ry_Code=986seat It's for the 986, but looks the same as mine... Thanks! Tom Loren, I found the parts at Sunset. They have both driver's and passenger's side. It was $52 for driver's side and $40 for passenger. The bolts were $0.99 each. (I'm glad you mentioned them!) Thanks again! You should get a raise ;) Tom Tom: Are you replacing the seat belt buckles because of an airbag light problem? If so, you will likely need additional parts to get rid of the light (aside from a Durametric, PST 2, or PIWIS). Regards, Maurice. No, I am not replacing them. I am putting the new receptacles on my track seats so I don't have to swap them each time I do the seat switcheroo. Just 4 bolts and an electrical plug. -td

  8. I found the seat belt buckle number here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/PartsLookup/HT...2-00-Frame3.htm But I also need the related electronic connector as shown in the attached fig. Does this come with the buckle, or is it bought separately? Thanks, Tom
  9. Is there a master list of wheel sizes for the 996? I was thinking it would be a great resource to have them in a table form so that we could look up the info without recycling the same question in multiple threads. For example: 1999 C2: Front: 17": 7" width, 55ET, 205/50-17, 25.2 OD, XX PSI Rear: 17": 9" width, 55 ET, 255/40-17, 25.0 OD, XX PSI Front: 18": ETC Rear: 18": ETC 1999 C4: 2000 C2 C4 2001 C2 C4 2002 C2 C4 2003 C2 C4 2004 C2 C4 I'll be happy to put it in a table or excel spreadsheet if someone has the information. Cheers, -tom
  10. Sorry, Loren, I didn't ask for the specific code. After some contemplation - I'm going to let the Ruf guys fix it. I'm a little nervous about fiddling with the airbag system. Thanks for your help! -tom
  11. My airbag light came on. I had the code read, and the problem isn't the seatbelt - rather it's something in the steering column. Is there a TSB or DIY on this? or should I just leave it to the pros this time? Thanks in advance. -td
  12. Is there a part number for this? I've been on Pelican for a while and can't locate it... Thanks, -td
  13. Check your muffler. Mine had a sporadic rattle as well that grew to constant. I got a used replacement for free and my troubles are over. Post more info if that's not the rattle, and we can point you to other culprits. -td
  14. What Loren said. And don't forget to check out TSB 6420 (windshield fix with rope). -td
  15. Due to the last rain storm, I had a slight off road excursion. A few of the little plastic airflow pieces are now gone, and one of the plastic wheel well covers came loose. This is located in the front portion of the wheel well and is the thing that is riveted on (I used a zip tie to hold it in place temporarily). Is there a parts list / TSB or other resource showing the part numbers for the front airflow pieces under the car? Thanks in advance, -td
  16. Can anyone shed some light on whether the 993 seat mounts are the same as the 996? There is a 993 fitment Recaro seat that I was contemplating purchasing for my 996. Thanks, -td
  17. Something in my engine makes a tapping sound quite frequently. The dealer informed me that it is some type of a purge valve and it is operating correctly. This is a very rhythmic tapping that is related to engine speed, i.e., higher RPM = faster tapping. However, based on the frequency of the noise, it sure seems like there is something wrong - as it's almost always making the tapping noise. Anyone have this issue? Is this something I can replace myself? Or do I even need to? Thanks, -thomas
  18. Loren, Thanks for the quick reply. Not to sound more like a novice - but what does "checking the heatshields" entail? Do I need to jack the car up first? Will a loose heatshield be apparent, or will I have to poke something to verify? And if something is loose - how do I tighten them? Thanks again for your insight on P-cars! -td
  19. I have a very short duration rattle during accleration - as if there is a harmonic rattle due to the engine vibration. It is very similar to the sound that you might get if you had change in your console and then accelerated - it doesn't rattle/vibrate all the time, but you can hear it EVERY TIME at approximately 2000-3000 rpm in first gear, and it reoccurs in second - fifth. Each rattle/vibration lasts only about 1 second, then stops. You can repeat the rattle at standstill just by revving, but it's not always in the same range. [it does not appear to be an engine problem and it's definitely not a persistnet muffler rattle - this is more like loose metal somewhere] In fact, it seemed obvious to me that it was the license plate cover, so I took it off - but that didn't fix it. It really sounds like something is just a bit loose but I can't pinpoint it. Are there any likely candicates for parts to need tightening? It's more annoying than having a splinter in your eye ;) -td
  20. This happens to my instrument cluster every now and again. I usually just "rap" on it pretty hard and it comes back on. Once, I slid my hand under the dash (after removing the air conditioner tube - which just slides out) and gently prodded the wires back there. Something "reconnected" and it worked again. Come to think of it, it hasn't gone off since then. *knock on wood* I would try the brute force fix before I started buying new bulbs ;) -td
  21. Passenger front seat (in the US, so right hand side of the car). If they come in pairs, that's perfect, otherwise I need the one closest to the center console. Thanks again, Thomas
  22. Loren, A previous post indicated that the part number below would work for an older model porsche. Is this the same number for my 2000 C2? (it is the knob that allows you to lean the front seats forward). 911 521 817 00 01C Control Button in Satin Black 311 881 247 Clamp (that holds it in place) Thanks, -td
  23. My old handbrake was pretty scratched up (grey) so I bought a new one (advertised as grey). It is actually darker than mine and isn't covered with the soft stuff that scratches off - I never liked the soft stuff anyway... I would like to use the leather grip from my old handle, but I can't figure out if that part of the handbrake comes off. It almost seems like it's one piece. I took the button off, but there aren't any screws holding it in place... Has anyone switched the leather part on a handbrake before? -td
  24. If I purchase a center console for my 6-speed 2000 996 that is currently in a Tip, can I simply "snap" in the 6 speed boot and shifter knob where the tip shifter goes? It appears that this is the case, but I thought that the Gurus here would know. Thanks in advance, -td
  25. My suggestion: If you are intent on using Focal's -> talk to Rod Birch at http://www.caraudioinnovations.com/. My reasoning: If you want true 4-component system (high, midrange, midbass, bass), you won't be able to achieve this cost effectively with the 2 component + 5WS + woofer system (also I understand that the 5WS's aren't being made anymore). This is true for 2 reasons: 1) Even if you can't notice the difference between true midbass speakers (which would come in the 3-component setup) and the 5WS acting as midbass (if you buy the 2-way and add the 5WS) this option is more expensive, since the 2-way set costs $219.99 (cheapest polyglass set) and each 5Ws costs $200+ (if you can find them) This will set you back over $600 bucks. With the higher quality 2-way set, your pushing $700. 2) You can't use the 3 component Focal set (165V) which is what you REALLY NEED for great sound -> because it has a 6.5" midbass which won't fit in your door (easily) - it will "fit" with a LOT of work, and still might not sit properly, or might rattle. DOH! You really need the 5.25 midbass (I think it comes in the 2-way set.) (BTW, the 3-way is $599 on woofersetc.com). So what do you do? Call Rod Birch. Rod sells a hybrid 3-component Focal set which is specific to Porsches. It has the same 4" and tweeter in the 165V, but he substitutes a 5.25" midbass (with Focal's approval of course). NOW you can have a true 3-way system that will fit in your car using Focal speakers. (I suggest also getting a set of coaxial fill speakers for the back -> $200) When you add your woofers, you'll get the best 4 way sound. Rod will even do you one better: if you ship him your grills, he'll install them into your grills (at very reasonably prices) and ship them back to you. Check out his site, and do some Rennlist searches for him. His group is widely respected for Porsche stereo upgrades. This may all be worthless info if you don't wanna add a woofer setup. I f you're not going to add subs, you're in the right ball park using the 2-ways and the 5WS's (again, if you can find them). -td <- my $.02 a few times over
