  1. Porsche Australia runs regular drive days for likely buyers, usually about 300 km on counrty roads, I guess you have them in the US too, I have been on two of them. They have 6 or 8 Carreras and Boxters and during the day you get to drive each car. Its a good way to compare the cars and the tyres. I found that the Bridgestone tyres were the quietest, my 99 C2 came fitted with them, the model numebr is probably out of date now but they are SO2's Good grip wet or dry, long mileage and quiet. Cant say what they are like in snow.
  2. My buddy owns an Aston Martin Vanquish. He spent about 7000 EUR (~9200$) on the built in sound system which is made by Alpine as far as I know. Anyway the sound sucks becauses the equalizer is a joke. A monitor based nav system ws not available by AM. So he spent another few grands to have a customized panel fit in together with amplifiers and a pioneer avix xc1. Still I would trade in the car for my Porsche at any time :notworthy: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The ''sound'' system is fine, its the built in Zuffenhausen Symphony coming from various parts of my car that I was referring too, I haven't had the window squeak that Toddels mentions but have had just about very other that has been raised on this forum by countless owners. I just wish they could raise the body build to the same level as the performance and handling.
  3. Hi Toddel & Wofgang, I think what we need is German design and Japanese build. Love my car but I am really p------ off with the built in sound system.
  4. My 99 996 c2 had a similar noise, the struts you mention are in the luggage compartment, if you remove the mouldings on either side of the battery compartment you can see them. Each one has a bush at the point it is attached to the body. In my case the bushes were replaced and it fixed the problems. I think there are some TSB's re this problem.
  5. Have to agree with Jason, your car looks great. Although its diverting from the thread could you give some tips on how you have achieved that underbody result.
  6. My 99C2 has had more than its share of rattles, fortunately after a lot of work by Porsche Australia and myself most have now been eliminated. Mine had a similar rattle which Porsche traced to the roof tensioners inside the roof lining. On the 99 model I was told by Porsche that they were glued to the roof. The epoxy used was not suitable maybe for our higher temperatures here and they broke away from the roof. Each time the car hit a bump the tensioner would vibrate against the roof. I too was told by the dealer to turn the radio up, rattles aren't covered by warranty and unbelievably ''we are doing you a favour''. So I contacted PCA directly. To their credit they arranged to get it fixed. The roof lining in my car was removed 5 times, the first 4 by the dealer failed to fix it, the fifth time finally fixed the problem. If this is your problem you should be able to check by asking someone to sit in the back and press the roof lining while you drive. Hope this is it, I know how frustrating it is to drive such a great car when it sounds like a $10K import.
  7. I had a similar problem with my 99 C2 coupe, I am not sure if yours has similar panels but from your description of the noise it sounds as though it may be the same problem. With mine I found that one of the metal spring clips that holds the trim in place had been bent over instead of pushing through the aperture in the body. Loren sent instructions on how to remove the panels.
  8. Before you spend your money on a new muffler I suggest you check the insulating material that is fitted inside the rear bumper. My car [99C2] had an annoying rattle from the rear muffler area on one side. I found that the insulating material had not been located correctly at the factory, one piece was touching another at idle. If you raise the car then hit the bumper or muffler with your hand it will rattle if that is what your problem is.
  9. For what its worth my 996 C2 is now 5 years old but only has 20,000 miles up. I have had a similar problem since new and its still there. No change in the intensity during that time. Even after a short drive at low speed its there. It clears quickly, probably half a minute and you dont notice it. I have had no oil leaks, RMS or clutch problems. A friend has an early 996 and the first thing he asked me when he bought it a few months ago was ''whats the hot smell''. His has done about 40K. Mine is manual his is tip.
  10. Thanks for the replies, which model have you got T.P. they have quite a few on the website
  11. Dell One of the parts on my shopping list was a power bleeder that will fit a 99 C2. I remember seeing some info. about which parts dealers sold these but cant find that post when I search. Any places in LV that would stock this item. I will also be in Austin TX so if anyone can help from there thanks in advance. Glenn
  12. I will have a four day stopover in Las Vegas on the way back to Australia next month, anyone know of any good non dealer Porsche parts outlets in L.V. similar to Pelican Parts in L.A. I have nothing particular in mind, just want to do a bit of browsing. Thanks
  13. Thanks Loren. Do you ever get to drive your car, each time a new topic is posted your reply comes back almost immediately. Its a great forum, congratulations again for such a valuable resource for Porsche owners.
  14. Any suggestions on how best to repair scuff marks and damage to the trunk lever used on early 996s. I'm guilty of adding a couple but most appear after visits to the dealer but try convincing them of that. Clear contact film does help mask some of the marks and a silver adhesive dot covers the large one but I still see them each time I open the door. Thanks
  15. Thanks for the info. on Speedlingerie, I have been talking to them but unfortunately they dont do one that covers the lights and the fenders. I agree though that they are the best looking of what I have seen. I will stick with my Aussie bra for now. I have used it for 4 years and I have had no damage. The one trip I did without it I got sprayed and the chips are [you guessed it] on top of the fenders.
  16. Your post arrived just in time, I had ordered a 2 pc bra but didn't realise that the lights were not covered until I read your message, you cant tell from the website photo. The locally made one I have has clear plastic panels that cover the lights and indicator lights. Without the plastic there must be a lot of dirt etc. that can get under the bra at that point.
  17. Thanks for the photos Jimmy, I'll check if they are available here.
  18. Thanks for the photos Jimmy, I'll check if they are available here.
  19. Thanks for the info. is there a website that shows details of the clear bra, I haven't seen them in Australia. Once installed is it always on or can it be removed. Bob, thanks for your input, I have a one piece bra which works Ok but you must remove it to get to the luggage. Is yours a Colgan from Pelican, if so how does the lower section attach around the luggage compartment. My car is ocean blue, shows marks very easily but so far its been ok with the bra, I always apply plenty of wax before I fit it.
  20. I'm thinking of buying the 2 pc. car bra and the mirror bras sold by Pelican Parts for my 99/996 C2, if anyone has used them I would really appreciate any comments.
  21. My 99 had the gearbox removed to fix a squeaky clutch return spring [common problem]and the torsion struts located near the battery replaced. I have driven quite a few early 996 and all had a lot of squeaks and rattles. Mine is no exception. The worst one in my car was behind the roof lining, the dealer had to remove the lining 5 times before they finally fixed it. There was a recall in Australia for a paint problem around the engine hood. Mine did not have it. If you plan to drive your car with the windows up and the aircon on I would take a long ride in it and get them to fix them all before you took delivery. If not you will need a good stack of CD's Sun visors also have a problem and its expesive to replace them, see my post last week. Apart from that the cars are great.
  22. Paul, When I dismantled the visor mirror I found that the two plastic slots that hold the metal springs had both cracked. They are so thin there is no way they are going to last. Really low quality plastic moulding. I have used two small strips of velcro on the plastic section between the lights and the mirror and two on the inside of the lid. This holds the lid closed when the visor is down and is hardly noticeable when the mirror is open. When I bought this car new I had no idea that I would be spending many weekends fixing Porsche quality problems. The car looks and goes great but much of the build quality and components are no better than a $10K compact. They cost A$200K here Glenn
  23. That what I meant, do you just lever it out with a screwdriver, I tried but lost my nerve when it didn't come out easily
  24. Loren, Thanks for your help with the rear window trim issue. Is it possible to remove the sun visor mirror assembly from the visor. Both return springs shown in the foreground of the photo have come loose and were bouncing around inside the mirror. At least I have found yet another annoying rattle but the mirror wont stay open and moves when the visor is down. Congratulations for this forum, wish I had found it 4 years ago, signing up as a contributing member today. The list of problems with my 996 would fill a book but at least with the forum I can fix most problems myself without having to go through the frustration and expense of using a Porsche dealer. The car is just about sorted now, only took 4.5 years. Glenn
