  1. I've done a lot of searching and reading here on Renntech along with PCA's site and the web. I found several people talking about hockey pucks and such and I found three different "alternate jack points", but only the first two are referenced on Renntech (other than in someone's photo on a RMS post): On the frame, just in front of the rear jack point. That makes me very nervous. Near the sump on the engine. I think that applied to the 996, though, and probably wouldn't work On the skid plate just behind (or in front if looking at the car front to back) the muffler. This makes the most sense and even seems to be the one the factory The last one is referenced on PCA's site as: and and I find the PCA explanation confusing because it's not clear if they mean front of the car or front as if you're looking from the tailpipe forward. I found a clearer photo of this jack point here with this photo: What are your thoughts? How many have tried this jack point and is this the best one? Thank you in advance for your reply.
  2. All, I'm getting ready to do my plugs on my 986 and found this thread. I thought I'd pass along a find on a great tool that I've used on my BMW which requires similar contortionist moves and deep sockets. After years of cussing out my crappy rubber plug sockets and ALWAYS losing them in the engine no matter what I used to secure them to extension and digging them out with screwdrivers, hooks, and all sorts of crap. I finally broke down and bought this set from KD Tools. It's 3 x 3/8" drive, 5/8" spark plug sockets with swiveling (attached) extensions in 4", 6", and 11" lengths. And best of all, they're magnetic! No more rubber crap. Best Info on them Best Price - $34.99
  3. I've been noticing the "Fluid Extractor" in the SkyMall and Griot's Garage catalog for a while and my BMW and Boxster are nearing time for oil changes. I'm wondering if this is really an easier way. I'm suspicious, but (according to the catalogs) this is how Mercedes does their oil changes. Has anyone tried one?
  4. Thanks for the photo. I'll will post details and a photo once I get them - hopefully later this week.
  5. Thanks for the reply, Loren. Unfortunately, I'm not replacing sill guards, I'm installing them on bare sills. I was hoping someone might be able to send me the measurements or post a photo so I would have some idea of the positioning. Maybe I'm making too much of it and it will be obvious when where they go when I actually get them, but I thought I'd ask.
  6. Does anyone know what the measurements are?
  7. I found a seller on eBay who is unloading lots of the OEM Stainless 986 Boxster door sills for $149 + $12.50 S&H. (Link), P/N 986 551 981 01 I'm purchasing a set and wondered if anyone has instructions on how to position them. Possibly a measurement from the door latch or something. Any help would be appreciated.
  8. My low coolant light came on as I was leaving for a trip, so I had to top it off with some BMW coolant (green/phosphate-free, expensve stuff). I've got an appt. with the dealer (still under warranty) about the leak, but do you think the BMW coolant is ok?
  9. The rolling down the windows during the traffic stop doesn't always work - the cop noticed my rear window during a stop & asked me to roll them up so he could scan. My car was filthy from a long road trip, so he said they were like 12% and wrote me a ticket. In Florida, you can fix & pay a reduced fine, or just pay the full fine. I just paid the full fine and I'll pay it again next time... As for tints, I had Llumar on two of my previous cars and had no fading, peeling or other issues (make sure you go to a good installer), but I'm going for Huber Optik on my 986 in a few weeks. It's pricey, but blocks way more heat, which is a good thing in the Sunshine State.
  10. Obviously not the same thing, but when I first got it back from the dealer, the automatic lowering switch didn't work. I had to hold the switch to get it to go down. After a cycle or two, it started working normally, though.
  11. To avoid this in the future, consider getting a Priority Start! device. It plugs into your battery & will shut it down if you leave the lights on. I bought one for my 986 because I didn't like the whole no access to the hood when the battery dies thing. Install is 5 mins, and it could save you this headache next time. I think it's prioritystart.com or something and you can get them at Performance products or on eBay.
  12. I just took a rough measurement with my tape measure, and it looks to be ~6" in the front, 6.5" in the back. Don't hold me too it, but that's what I measured on my '03 with 18" wheels. Remember too that there are other factors in bottoming out, like the suspension, length between wheels & lowest point, etc.
  13. I've been pleasantly surprised by the front clearance on my Boxster ('03 2.7). My '01 BMW 525i has much less clearance and has bottomed out several time (ouch!). As for the rear clearance I totally understand, and I think it is a little low, but living in FL, there aren't a whole lot of steep hills.
  14. Just got back from the dealer - they replaced the regulator, motor, & microswitches. Why? I'm not sure, but the window works again I don't care - it was all under warranty :D
  15. Definitely be careful - the Federal Odometer Act (Google it) is very restrictive about damage to odometers & odometer replacements & repairs. There are harsh penalties if you or the mechanic do not comply. I had to sell one of my old cars with a (actual mileage unknown) because a fuse blew out that ran the mechanical odometer. It killed the value so much that I sold it to a family member for almost nothing.
  16. Very impressive systems you have or are building. I wanted to let you know that Tom's Hardware recently posted an article on CarPuters: Rolling your own Car PC
  17. All, to chime in here, chips do magical things to older and less performance oriented cars. My dad's got one in his '87 911 and it makes a noticeable difference. I had one in a VW Jetta back in college and it was amazing, and when I bought my BMW 525i last year, I was game to get one for it, to speed up the car. I went to Dinan's website as they are the premier BMW tuner, and they said that BMW has extracted about all they can from the engine and they don't even offer a chip. My research into chips for 2000+ Porsches seems to lead me that same conclusion. Just like strut tower braces & such, it seems that Porsche has engineered the cars so well that getting HP gains aren't easy. From what I can tell (I just bought a '03 Boxster), it seems like your best bets for more power are to add an EVO intake & upgrade the exhaust. Beyond that, I think you'd need to add a turbo to get much more out of the engine or better yet, jam a 911 engine in there like a few on here have done.
  18. When I locked my Boxster the other day, I noticed that Central Locking button/switch flashes for about 10s and then goes off. Is this normal? I searched here and reviewed the owner's manual but can't find anything. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I haven't noticed it before and there have been 2 or 3 times lately when my car's unlocked when I could swear I had locked it.
  19. Well, I like them so far. They aren't great for backing the car up, but when I zipped up the on-ramp to the interstate, I could see all 6 lanes behind and beside me and there was no blindspot when I let some cars pass me as I was getting off the interstate. I think they'll take some getting used to, but so far so good. Of course, the mirror has to pass the wife-test and she already thinks it's dumb. If she like it, though, I'm putting one on my Bimmer as well (for a more affordable $40-50).
  20. The dealer didn't have time to look at it today (I had to make an appt. for the 30th), but they didn't think it was the regulator. They pushed down on the window with the door open and the window went down to the right height (at least until the door was shut & opened again). That's why they didn't think it was the regulator - but I'm not sure why they think that.
  21. I just found this link on private warranties for Boxsters:Link I purchased an extended warranty for my 2001 BMW 525i and so far have had good luck with it. I've only used it for rental car reimbursement, and even though it was quite messy as far as my not getting "pre-approval" and such, they honored it. I would think they'd have far less motivation to pay claims that Porsche themselves (who don't want to tick off their customers) but who knows. I'm (unfortunately) about to try out the factory warranty on my 2003 Boxster in a week or two, so I'll let you know how that goes.
  22. Ok, that's a little less than the $75+tax I paid! Hopefully I'll like the aspheric one...Nice pictures - where was this meet?
