You've got 1/2 of your gears and you're missing the other half It's gotta be a cable issue. Thoughts Loren?
-
Agreed .. Plenum is a good one. I have never had a problem with a K&N filter either. But I believe this poster is considering the K&N "Cold air kit" which has been known to cause some people problems. It also requires drilling some holes in the car..
I figured but I should have been more specific. I installed my K&N cold air intake system three years ago. I have replaced my MAFS since then but I'm confident the failure was the result of age and not the filter element oil. I saw no residue on the element but it was definitely bad.
-
The supposed MAF issues have been debunked by several independent laboratories. I've had the K&N on my 99 c2 for three years and I can tell you the sound alone is well worth the money. If you would only buy it for the power gains save your money as they are purely speculative. The response gains are barley noticeable. The sound however is phenomenal. If you're looking for a pricey but effective bolt on look into the IPD plenum. I've had mine for over a year and I can say it's the only bolt on I've done that really had a dramatic effect on the feel or the car. The price is around $1000 but I'm glad I bought one.

Sounds like a simple cable issue. Inspect the cable mounting points at the back of the transmission. You'll probably find that one of the cables has slipped out of its mounting bracket. Could be as simple as snapping the cable back into place and adjusting the tines that keep it secured. One of the cables may have also come free of the shifter base. Ether way it should be a cheap and easy fix.
-
Probably not a bad idea at all. I hope it turns out to be nothing. :)
-
If it's a collapsed mount than you should notice movement in the shifter or a clunk when shifting under acceleration.
-
It clearly looks like the mount is leaking but thats got to be engine oil. You need to clean the top of the engine throughly and then let it run so you can observe the origin of the leak. If you don't see any oil up top than it must be a mount but I really doubt it.
-
Aside from worn rings or valve guides what would be a possible cause of oil in the cylinders of only one bank? It sounds dumb but I hope the issue is common to all cylinders.
-
The Boxster S is a blast and with 75% fewer miles it's a clear no-brainier.
-
Very nice Logray. Congrats!
-
Oh, I see. I guess it's not worth $500 if ti's that easy to replace. But it is just a matter of time for the alternator as well. Mine croaked @ 85k.
-
The post at 4am speaks volumes. I hope the install is easier than the removal for you.Just think of all the sweet sweet greenbacks you're saving. :)
-
Isn't the regulator integrated into the alternator? If you're going to remove the alternator why not just replace the entire thing.
-
The AOS should come with the boot that connects the base of the AOS to the case. The boot should definitely be replaced but the lower clamp is a bit of a hassle. It the car a tip.? The job is much easier in a manual.
-
There aren't allot of ways for oil to reach the combustion chamber sounds like an AOS. You made mention of the time frame for consumption but how about the mileage?
-
If you're just into the track for fun it's hard to overlook the 914 as a bang for the buck Porsche. I would definitely agree that a cab is far from the best option as a street/track driver.
-
Sounds like a plan!
-
I would think it's perfectly acceptable to notice a change in running condition after cleaning the MAFS. The resistance values the PCM is seeing are considerably different before the cleaning. Do you have a K&N? I'm not following the path that so many have taken before I'm just curious.

Once I turned on my Garmin Nuvi 680 during a flight from Denver to Chicago. It read 531 MPH! So, I think my Garmin can pace with my Porsche.
That's because you were closer to the satellites!
I don't know why, but my Magellan just wasn't up to the task.
I'm not an engineer but I'd be surprised if 20 or 30 thousand feet made a huge difference to something moving at 17k miles an hour and over 100 miles away. When I was in the army we'd always have the new guy stand on the roof of the truck and hold up the GPS unit to get a better signal. It's the funniest **** thing to watch a guy that honestly thinks 4 feet is going to matter try to peer at the dimly lit screen of a plugger held over his head in a snow storm. If he's willing to do that you know you'll have no problem giving him a roll of duct tape and a trash bag to "take an exhaust sample" from the Hummer.

Oh, and 147 isn't a crazy speed?
I had mine up to 122 in central CA, and my GPS couldn't keep up either.
I'm 26 so I'm still invincible :P . The speed wasn't that scary but an suv in the left lane forced me to change lanes suddenly at 147. Things come up on you way faster than one would expect at that speed. All I could think about was how stupid I was and that I could have killed some unsuspecting guys family on there way home from the zoo. I haven't even come close to that speed since. In fact I just paid my 14mph over ticket this morning.
However I'm sure someone's had the guts to really flog one of these puppies in the US.
-
Thats awesome Barry! I've had mine up to 147 and I think the car held up better than I did. I'd be curious to hear from anyone willing to post some really crazy speed.
-
What was your top speed as the miles rolled by? :welcome:

I've changed the oil in literally hundreds of 986s and 996s and the only metal I've ever seen have been large chunks of crank and rod. :o In my earlier post I wasn't suggesting that everyone should notice metal in there oil. I'm just thinking that it's probably not a major issue because I've never seen a minor issue with one of these engines.
-
I agree with Loren. Every engine experiences friction on some level. If we ever live to see the day that oil filters are free of all particulate matter we may never need to but a new car again. If this is particulate matter that's so small you can't get pictures of it than you are almost certainly in the clear.

Boy that's great! I'm so glad it turned out to be a cheap fix. :jump:
