  1. Thanks Loren. The CEL/misfire only appeared after having passed 5500 rpm. After resetting the CEL and some "spirited" driving the problem hasn't reappeared. HOWEVER, it has regained response and torque I can't remember it ever having in my ownership....
  2. 1998 Boxster 2.5. Mileage ~100.000 The engine misfires when cruising and on high loads/rpms. It has been like this for a while, but yesterday it finally triggered the CEL. A permanent light at first, but it started flashing after a while I borrowed an OBD scanner and read the following codes: P0300 - Engine misfire P0301 - Cyl 1 misfire P0302 - Cyl 2 misfire P0303 - Cyl 3 misfire I cleared the codes, but it is still misfiring and hesitates slightly on idle. Any typical faults causing these codes? I've read the other threads and came up with: Variocam solenoid, AOS malfunction, Air leak. As the fault is present at only one cylinder bank, bad spark plugs is not the explanation? This is the diagnosis report from ProScan: http://home.c2i.net/hmhaga/boxster/diagnosis.pdf Any chance that more codes are stored, hidden from the OBD-interface? Bummer....just had the car removed from winter storage :(
  3. Is it possible to replace the front ball joint, instead of buying the whole lover control arm? Likewise, is it possible to replace the control arm bushing (attaching the control arm to the body)?
  4. Old topic...But is this safe?: ...from http://boxsters.addr.com/jacking.htm I'm a bit worried that the plates will bend as they are not reinforced at that point (?), but it solves the problem of placing the rear end on jack stands using a floor jack.
  5. I hadn't really intended to spend/waste money on clear lights, but the previous owner installed high wattage bulbs just prior to my purchase, and after a few days I noticed that the front headlights were destroyed (plastic melted). As he kindly offered to purchase new headlights...well, now I've got clear lights all over :) ...and I don't regret it now. Made my old Boxster look quite a few years younger.
  6. Being used to a 6MT Subaru STI gearbox, the 2.5 986 gearbox/gear transfer is a real disappointment. I need shorter throw, but the stock shifter is already quite heavy to operate. Does it get noticeably heavier to operate with a short throw kit?
  7. As the front bumper has some scratches and plastic damage, I'm considering a replacement. Spending $1000++ is not an option, but I think the 99-01 996 front bumper would looks like a nice improvement on the Boxster (Can't say that the stock bumper looks very aggressive). Is it plug and play, or do I need some additional plastic? Plastic clips, radiator ducts etc?
  8. The stock 2.5 exhaust is too silent, only the lovely induction noise tells me I'm driving a 6 cyl boxer engine. I know there are a lot of options, but I do NOT want excessive sound levels. On my Impreza WRX, I have a Remus silencer. This produces a lovely boxer exhaust note, but still measures only 94 dbA. One key point is that the Remus silencer is not fully stainless steel, so it produces a "softer" sound than the usually "raspy" stainless steel alternatives. The problem is that the Remus silencer for the Boxster has a stupendous price tag ($1600). Any recommendations? I see the Dansk silencers are popular, but again afraid of the db levels. What's the point of having a cabriolet, if one has to wear ear plugs to drive it :P
  9. I bought a '98 Boxster 3 weeks ago, and upon finding this forum/thread - I decided to desnorkel my car. The lovely air intake sound actually played an important role in my decision to buy a Boxster, I was in love after a test drive :) I also removed the foam from the airfilter, to complement the desnorkel mod. I'm very satisfied with the final result, the sound level has increased noticeably - without being obtrusive at low rpms/light trottle.
  10. Did you change the brake pads at the same time? If not, they'll be shaped after the old worn rotors and have a reduced contact area against the new discs. This will cause a soft pedal.
  11. I'm about to purchase a '98 Boxster.... Excuse my ignorance, but is the RMS seal a common problem on Porsche engines? Why?! I've owned an Impreza WRX for 5 years, I've never even heard about this problem on the Subaru boxer engines. It is usually the front seal that breaks, but only at high mileage. When replacing the flywheel/clutch, I did replace the rear seal just for safety - with no special tools needed.
  12. -Sorry, that was a rhetoric question ;) Obviously a convenient typo to make the option list look more impressing, as another site says "224 Active Brake Differential"
  13. From the option codes >222 Traction Control System >224 Automatic Limited Slip Differential Car is a '98 Boxster, 5 speed manual. What does the option code "224 - Automatic Limited Slip Differential" imply? Is it just electronic trickery with wheel speed sensors and ABS/brakes?
