  1. My 987 is 2.5, 5 speed Boxster. Problem has been ongoing from day I went to pick up my new 987 from dealer. This pinging is always present when there's slight to medium increase in RPM from a constant speed. Top must be up and AC fan on low to better listen for pinging. For example, if I'm doing 65 w/cruise control on and come to a slight incline or hill, as 987 starts to go up the incline more RPMs are necessary and at that moment is when the metalic pinging occurs. Or if I'm doing a steady 55 in 5th gear with cruise control off, and increase the RPM just a little, that's when I hear the pinging sound. Or if I'm doing a steady 45 in fourth and slightly increase the RPM's will produce this metalic pinging sound. From hearing this sound in older American cars I've owned, it was diagnosed as pre-detonation or pinging. To my untrained ear it sounds like pre-detonation in the Boxster too. The new dealer that I started going to has heard the sound and tried to identify the problem. The first idea was the power steering pump is affected by increase in RPMs, so it was replaced (I think it was defective anyway because it would growl when making a full turn). Pinging sound was still there. I have a Monday appt. and they will try again. Any body have this problem with their 987s? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks, John from Florida
  2. I have a 987 2.5 5 speed Boxster purchased new. Squeak sounds like plastic is binding in front of steering column. Occurs mostly during cold weather when heater is on, or during night drives with heater off during summer months. Area is Northern Florida. I've endured this squeak for over a year and 19,500 miles. Only once did it appear with porsche rep inside. Dealer tried to fix it, but when it reappeared and I took car back, Porsche mechanic refused to try and find squeak unless he could hear squeak again. I told him it doesn't happen all the time but comes and goes. He still refused to look for problem unless he could hear it again. When squeak does appear, I can make it stop by twisting the steering column and as long as I hold that position the squeak stops. But when I let go of the steering solumn squeak comes back until it goes away on its own. A Boxster friend from Boxster Petes BB recently suggested I video tape the squeak with sound and take that to the dealer. I wish I had done that during the winter months. I have a Monday appt with another dealer, and if any one has any ideas, they are appreciated. John from Florida
