  1. You can count me in John for £50. That's about $95 for you yanks out there ;)

    I have been trying to stick one on Porsche GB for a long time after my RMS fiasco (which is still ongoing) and my Gearbox screw up.

    The only thing I would ask is to be kept fully informed of what's going on and that I get to see a copy of all the communication and reports

    either on the forum or via email etc. I think that you shopuld also canvas PCGB (yes I am reading your thread their too). If PCGB cant help

    and back you in this matter (especially with the RAC report) then I dont see me renewing my membership with them again. However, it may be

    interesting to see the outcome with PCGB since it is now NOT wholly independent. As of last year Porsche now own PCGB.

    Another thing to do is to think about writing up a full account of your story for the mags.

  2. Has anyone placed a powered subwoofer in the trunk of a C4? I'm wondering if it is located close to the cabin filter it would produce a satisfactory audio experience without having to take up non-existent space in the passenger compartment. I'm not looking to blow the doors off.

    I tried to put a sub in my C4 boot (trunk) but it doesnt work and it takes up room and I also have my kicker amp in there already with a false floor above it. I ended up putting a cut down sub tube on the back seat since I never use the seated area and my wind deflector is always setup so you dont see it anyway.

  3. Interesting write up and well done. But I suspect that car will be back for another RMS replacement sometime soon.

    Couple of points to think about next time:

    1) Both my local Porsche OPC and my indie workship recommend never to take a pick or screw driver to the RMS to remove it.

    The way to do it is to very carefully drill a small hole in it and screw a self tapper into it and pull it out. Any slip of a pick or driver could be costly.

    2) The seal is replaced using a special tool that is used both to align the seal and place it at the correct depth within the bore. If this is not used

    you can almost be certain the replacement seal will leak again. Toolpants has got pictures of the tool in his Boxster RMS page on this site.

    3) It's already been mentioned, but the cleaning process should be first and formost. The worst thing you can do is get any of the crap into

    the engine and/or on the clutch mechanism.

    4) I am not convinced that your suggestion to replace the flywheel is necessary. If it is contaminated maybe yes. But otherwise it should be good enogh

    to clean it up. It's an expensive item.

    Anyway thanks for the write-up. Its good to know that it is a DIY job albeit most of us dont have the car lift to do it :(

    You own a Porsche for Christs sake, a small contribution worth probably less than a bottle of oil could get you all the information you would need to put your side skirts on and much more.......what is your problem here!

  5. IMHO these things are fugly and dont deserve to go on a 996. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if they also induce a lot of wind noise and may even interfere with the air flow over the tail which could affect the airodynamics and downdraft. This could not only be dangerous at high speeds but also reduce the air flow into the engine causing it to overheat.

    Yeah I know this is all a bit OT but the fact is, PAG have done an enormous amount of wind tunnel testing on the shape of the body so there is reason not to fit these fugly things.

  6. Hi Loren, my hard top rear window is really dirty but I cant get my hand behind the

    hard-top integral shelf to clean it. I have instructions to dissasemble the hard-top (61-02-37)

    but there's no mention of how to take the integral parcel shelf out (which is odd!). Maybe the instructs I

    have are for post 2000 models and they are different. Do you have any instructs to do this for a MY00 cab top?

  7. I bet if you go back to the 0W40 oil, the ticking noise may deminish.

    My car does exactly the same and its common for the 996 to be a bit clackety at start up especially if its been left long and/or in cold temperatures. But that does sound a tiny bit louder than mine although exactly the same. White987S is right. The oil viscosity in 5W50 is thicker than 0W40 so when you start your car the oil will take a little longer to coat everything again. Go back to 0w40 and my guess it will go away or at least be a bit quieter.

    But its going in to have the new seal fitted within the next month.......by my independent of course!

    Hi, Scouser. Is the 7th the GT3 Motorsport seal installed backwards that you previously wrote was the end-all solution? Thanks.

    No. I was supposed to have that fitted back in May at my last service but the seal wasnt leaking so we left it. The 7th held up for the longest yet but alas it is now leaking again. So, it will go on again to have the 8th done. Now the question is do I go with the new 997 one, the 4th in the line of seal types or do I go to the GT3 deal fitted backwards. My independent seems to think the later will genuinely fix the problem for good. We will see what they suggest in November.

    A note to ickle_monster_au and any other UK renntecher.....NEVER EVER EVER, I mean EVER do you hear me.......trust the UK dealership service network. In the UK, you can go to a recognised independent and have the service done there and it WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR WARRANTY.....BY LAW.
