  1. i got lucky in that I was installing a PCM2 that I bought from another board member at the same time. he had a changer in his car so the PCM2 unit was already "programed" for the CDC-4. worked like a charm right out of the box without the obligatory $50 trip to the dealer :D
  2. He was trying to find out who installed the B&M SSK since the Svc Mgr told him it was installed incorrectly leading to tranny failure. I have installed about 10 of these and always mark on the cables with nail polish so I know where to "reallign" them. I think it's just the new owner's driving habits :(
  3. I also just called my friend who is a Porsche Tech at that dealership and he & another guy just happened to be working on the car. He said it has an RMS they are going to replace so they will go ahead and put a new tranny while they're in there. He said the Svc Mgr is just trying to do a favor to the customer by having them "reinstall" the SSK. This way the customer will be covered under warranty saying that the SSK was installed by a Porsche technician. Sometimes they said they like to blame SSK's for tranny probs as the driver does not fully allow time for the synchros to line up and you get a semi-grind. alls well that ends well....let's hope!
  4. Just got a call today from the guy I sold my '03 986S to last March. He said 2nd gear has been grinding to get into and now pops out whenever he drives it(he's put ~20K miles on it since last March) Took it into local dealer and they said that he needs a new transmission because the B&M SSK was installed improperly. They want to charge him approx $300 for reinstalling it correctly and have ordered a new tranny for him from Germany. He doesn't know or not if they are going to stick him with the bill for the tranny. He called today wanting to know who installed it and I told him that I did with the help of a Porsche technician. I vaguely remember something about other people having their cars pop out of second gear - but never heard of it blamed on the SSK? I installed it on the car shortly after buying the car in 7/03 @ ~ 1500 miles. Worked fine for me and never had any probs? The biggest worry I guess is if they stick him with the tranny bill can I be held liable for it??? The buyer knew that it had a SSK installed in it and at that time the Porsche SSK was not out then. I am calling the Service Mgr tomorrow(who I have a good relationship with) to get the exact story but am worried nonetheless.... Any thoughts???
  5. there was a seller on eBay who had a NEW one for sale for $175 - may be gone now??? Otherwise, they are all over eBay for $199. If you don't feel comfortable with eBay(I just got scammed for the first time after ~500 smooth transactions), you can contact the eBay seller directly and they will honor the price usually. Best mod out there...
  6. Loren et al - I have an '03 996 coupe that I've modded quite a bit. It has the GT3 front bumper cover, sideskirts and the "carrera wing". I'm ready to move on to a GT3 wing but don't know if it can be done. I looked at my father's GT3 and noticed that the rear deck lid is ompletely different than mine because of the airbox. Is there a GT3 retrofit wing - I realize that I'd probably have to buy the entire deck lid rather than just unbolt my current wing and reattach my new wing???
  7. i did the retrofit on my '03 coupe last month. at the same time i added the PCM2 nav unit. i too did not have any of the pin remover tools mentioned in the TSB but just used a paper clip unfolded. you just need to push something down the holes on either side of the pins and that does the same function as the fancy tools. of course, if i were to do alot of stuff that would require the tools, i'd probably end up buying the set :D now what are you guys talking about when you need the dealer to "activate" the CDC-4. Mine works just fine? Maybe it's because the PCM2 unit that I bought from a guy also had the CDC-4 so the PCM2 was already "accustomed" to the CDC-4? Are there any other advantages to getting the dealer to activate it???
  8. OMFG! 85K in 3yrs- now that is some driving! WOW! I agree. Oil burning IS normal for these engines. I add a quart about every 5000 miles and I was worried. My local porsche tech, who is also a friend, explained that all porsches burn oil AND they all leak - just some more than others. He has yet to see one that has not. I explained to him that mine does not leak. He then promptly lifted my car and showed me some seepage - albeit VERY small thank goodness :D
  9. recently, when I took my wife's BMW in for service, the service advisor noted that there was alot of carbon buildup and asked if we had been using supreme(93 octane)? car is 18 mos old with 14K miles. we had been using 93 octane from Chevron and he stated that BMW is now recommending ~90 octane b/c the higher octanes are causing alot of carbon buildup and throwing codes can this really be true? are we in reality hurting our Porsche engines by running higher octanes?
  10. embearassed to say but my tires are not the PS2's - they are in fact the Ribs :( For some reason I thought the ribs came out last year so there was no way they were OEM on my '03......but i was wrong atleast that's what the guy at tire rack told me. all it says on my tread wall is Pilot Sport, no "rib" or anything so it's just going by the tread design and the fact that i have been told that Michelin NEVER made a PS2 in 285/30/18 however, after talking to tirerack, it turns out Michelin has suspended production of these Pilot Sport Ribs and they have a backorder date until 3/29 but that was just a guess so it will be corrected shortly. there best guess now after talking to Michelin is 2 mos! I luckily found a discount tire who has these a pair in stock and are basically the same price as tirerack. got lucky - well, atleast i think i have :)
  11. Need to replace the rears only and have come to the realization that Michelin no longer makes the PS2's in my exact size: 285/30/18 for my 18" carrera 5 spoke 10" wide wheels. I really don't want to buy 4 new tires as my front tires are in great shape. Would any of the following PS2 sizes work for my rear rims? 275/35/18 295/30/18 295/35/18 any trade off to putting a different size than the OEM size? tia as usual
  12. Just got the CDC-4 retrofit kit in from the Porsche dealer and it seems that he gaveme some extra pieces. They gave me 3 different mounting brackets: 996.645.225.00 The one I need for rear wheel drive 996.645.229.00 For 4 wheel drive 996.645.230.00 ???????? Loren et al, any idea what the last bracket is for?
  13. loren - are you kidding???? do you ever sleep :D it seems everytime i post a question you answer within 30 minutes. thanks are not enough............
  14. Looking for the matte black targa top switch part number. It's the switch that fits on the left side of the center console in the upside down horshoe that fits around the radio. I don't have a targa but the switch looks like a garage door so that's what I'll be using it for. It's for an '03 C2 coupe 6speed if that makes any difference. thanks in advance for any help
  15. i'm surprised that they indicated they would have to remove the dashboard. i believe this can be done by just removing a few pieces within the center console(i.e. radio, and trim pieces) and the dash vents near the windshield. i too would be fearsome of removing the ENTIRE dash as it may create creaks that were not there before even if it were put back together spec. hopefully the CDC-4 is just acting up from trying to play burnt CD's(CD-RW)????
  16. i am shocked that they won't allow a more thorough test drive. MAYBE i could understand that if you looked AND carried yourself like absolute trash - but you currently "own" a porsche for goodness sake. i'd defintely try another dealer if there is one close - sorry :(
  17. thanks as always - i ordered the bumpstopss from Sunset and am having them expedited from Germany since they're are ZERO available in the US i'll let you know how the install goes in a couple of weeks :D
  18. expecting pics by tomorrow evening................... Sounds HOT! that is unless you are doing triple digits in Montana :D
  19. thanks again! i feel like an idiot now but just realized that when i ordered this suspension i did not confirm that i needed it for a 6 speed rather than a tip. but my part numbers match up for a 6 speed right??? talk about lucky.....geesh :D
  20. first of all - THANKS! i read in an earlier post in this thread about there being a choice between the compensation plates' size. is it best just to stick with the ones that are already on my car then? as far as the bumpstops, it was my understanding that they are different. here is a excerpt from the artice on the PCA website about the different suspensions: "here are standard as well as sport rear bumpstops all of which were measured as shown in Table 5 with the rear sport bumpstop found to be 13mm shorter than the standard version." i don't know what year these part numbers are from but i included it to show the height difference. thanks again for any guidance!
  21. geeez Loren - I think I am in trouble. I purchased the ROW M030 "complete" suspension kit from a company in the UK(not Carnewal) and I have a feeling I am not "complete" or even correct :( COuld you please verify what exactly I received 2003 C2 coupe 6 speed Shocks 996.343.041.18 (x2) and 996.333.051.22 (x2) Coils 996.343.531.19 (x2) and 996.333.531.26 (x2) shocks have green dots. coils have green & white dots next to each other with a brown dot lower down on the coil Satbilizers 996.343.701.04 and 996.333.701.19 two random pieces that are in pairs that look like they secure the end of the stabilizer bars? 996.343.792.12 and 996.333.792.25 there are two brass colored rings(~2" in diameter) that go with the rear shocks and the only part number they have imprinted on them is 996.3.00 and they are only with the rears, not the fronts. i can't find any bumpstops or compensation plates - are they supposed to be in the "kit"? if so, do you know the part numbers for these bumpstops & compensation plates(don't even know which thickness i need?)? here is a pic of my kit: d to be in the "kit". thanks a ton as always
