  1. hi all, '01 S w/ 43,500K mi I noticed engine knocking noises when I stepped out of my car one day - at idle*. I took it in for an oil change at a friends shop, and he felt 100% sure it was a loose exhaust. However, wanting to cover all bases, I took it into the dealer. The rep immediately suspected my clutch, and sure enough when he pressed it in, the knocking subsided. His explanation was that there is a single bearing that is apparantely drying-out and once it fails the clutch will be useless. He stated that he was 90% sure that was the problem, and it would be approximately $1800 (on the high side) to get it replaced. He said to determine if the that is truly the problem, they would need to take out the transmission at a cost of $1100. After hearing the noise stop by pressing the clutch, I suspect he is right, but would really like eveyones input here. If indeed this is the situation, what would happen if I continue to drive until it fails. Will I simply lose the clutch and have to get it replaced, or can there be more catastrophic damage? Truly, I don't understand the mechanics involved, nor really know my options. Thanks in advance. * I need to add that when I turn off the engine, it quickly knocks 3-4 times before it shuts off.
  2. Very nice. congrats. Can you please post before and after pics? Also, detail what you end up doing (suspension changes or spacers and such)? I have been looking to do the same, but I know nothing about this and not sure about any modifications that might need to take place to ensure proper wear and clearance. Camber and all that confuses me. Again, CONGRATS, they look cool!!
  3. 2001 boxster S, 44K miles Hi all. About 1K miles ago, I noticed a very sublte squeeking noise when the car is idle.- it is very faint and rythmic It sounds like it is coming from the bottom rear of the engine - um maybe. It does not increase in frequency with acceleration as far as I can tell, nor is it affected by turning on or off the A/C. I don't notice any performance degradation, but being that it just appeared, I am concerned - want to be preventative if possible. I would like some advice (things to test or look for) before blindly dropping at the dealer or import shop. Thanks.
  4. I called a local Euro-auto maintenance shop for a quote on replacing my radiator fluid, and being much cheaper than the dealership, I asked them what fluid they use. They use Pentosin. In reading all the threads here and elsewhere, I don't see anyone mentioning Pentosin. Input will be appreciated. Dealer cost = $250 using Porsche coolant 'Maint Shop' cost = $170 using Pentosin worth it?
  5. Sorry to hear about your TEMPORARY loss - a new one in your future ;) My wife also wants to move to Dubai and we have considered it. Wish you great travels!!! PLEASE post your experiences there!
  6. 2001'ster S Looking to do the PNP install soon (courtesy of Mr. Harvey)... My question is that I was under the impression that the wiring was in place for the rear speakers and that all you had to do was install the speakers and plug them in under the top (once in service mode). From there, you can utilize the fade option on the stereo.' According to your experience, that isn't the case huh? Also, what subs if any did you go with and did you replace the dash (if so, with what)? I was considering building out a small box between the two seats with 2 6inch or 8inch subs, but wasn't sure if the doors were adequate enough to hold decent low end speakers. Thanks!!
  7. Not a porsche, but for what it is worth, I had a friend that had a Ford that did something similar. His was an Oil Pump that went crazy and increased pressure causing the oil filter seal to rupture!!
  8. Well hell yah, why didn't I think of that. It will probably scare the livn' poop out of all varieties of garden pests! Now how will I know that what I order is really Lion poop versus some fat trucker's special! ROFL That reminds me of a story from back in my college days... A friend of mine was living with a family for a few months, and they had 5 Dachshunds. The dogs decided to go into my friends room and ***** all over his stuff. So, when he found out, he went over to their cage and did the same. He pissed on their cages, and according to him, on the dogs so they wouldn't forget him! Crazy. Hmmm, maybe I should ***** on my car???
  9. AH, good idea. Thanks, I will give it a shot. Summer time is looming, and we expect a few months over 100 degrees Celsius, so maybe that will cook it off! It has gotten a little better, but I won't really know until we have a hot+humid day - those seem the worst. Man, it is just crappy that everyone who has had similar problems has to do all the leg work and deal with the stress of others irresponsibilities - par for the course unfortunately! Thanks to everyone for helping me deal. My boxster is my getaway, my relaxation and excitement! My sanctuary at times! **** CAT! :: off to buy a pitbull (or two) ::
  10. -Topless ROFL, of course I do that, not the entire top! Although I am tempted. It is just in a very difficult spot to get to! I have determined that the cat is my neighbor's "outside cat". :-\ You think I can convince the neighbor to buy me a new top? They will probably request DNA evidence! - Chris_in_NH - I have to ask how you know? please share in my misery!!!!
  11. Yeah, it isn't very funny. It did however get me off my A$$ to clean out the garage that's for sure. No more parking outside even with a car cover. I figure if my top didn't keep it out, no car cover was going to either. I sure hope the enzyme cleaner works. I have already started pricing tops :-\ I have noticed that the smell is hard to detect on the exterior, but I suppose that is because of its direct exposure to the elements. On the inside, I apply the enzyme liberally, but my concern is that I might cause corrosion to the top's tension arms and/or metal supports. As I spray under the window, the run off goes deeper into the top than what I can see or blot dry. I am sure all the metal components are getting drenched.
  12. Okay, don't judge me based on the title. I love animals, and wouldn't do that, BUT..... I recently moved and the first night at the new place, I had to park my car outside because the garage was full of boxes. Needlesstosay, on my drive to work the next morning, I noticed cat paw-prints on the rear plastic window (2001 S). My first concern was that it punctured the window or something. Well, I got out and checked it, and no punctures. Good thing! So, after sitting out in the sun and humidity for the day, I got in for my drive home and sure enough I noticed WTF the cat was doing on the soft top! IT PISSED ON THE ROOF. The inside of my car smelled like ammonia and plain funk! - yeah yeah, real funny! Bastard cat marking his sleep spot I presume! So, it pissed on the lower driver's side corner just below the plastic window. Immediately I went out and bought enzyme odor fighters and the such, and sprayed the outside, and inside of the roof. What I don't understand is how it got into the car? Isn't the top supposed to protect from exterior elements? I guess the molecules of PissFunk are just too small? Anyway, if you have ever owned cats, you know that smell remains for a lifetime. If you have suggestions or know how to rid the odor completely (aside from keeping the top down all the time), then please, I am open to suggestions! Thanks, and hope you enjoyed the pathetic story!
  13. HELP 2001 S with approximately 36K miles. Hi all, I don't want to pay $200 a pop. This is my first oil change since I have owned this wonderful ride! My mechanic of 12 years won't touch it, I don't want to take it to a Jiffy Lube, and the only people that want to do it is the dealership at $175+tax! What gives? From what I have read here, it seems to be a simple process on the boxster. However, all the independent mechanics (obvioulsy the ones I am talking to don't specialize on porsches) say that some porsches are realy touchy and there is a specific stepped process that must be taken. Can you shed light on this?
  14. Simple fix for a simple problem. Turned out that there was a small piece of debris caught under the tab preventing the bulb from sitting flush.
  15. 2001 Boxster S (US) - stock Now I noticed the interesting thread about headlight assemblies, (http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=11457) , and wanted to warn you that my question is just lame in comparison and I feel very inadequate asking this, so please be kind.... I replaced a low beam bulb the other day and parked 4 or so feet from a fence. The focal point or strongest concentration of light is approximately 2.5-3 feet higher than the other untouched headlight's beam (the factory bulbs and assembly). Yes, almost 3 feet. Also, it is driving me crazy when I pull behind another vehicle and notice that one headlight is higher and brighter. It's driving me nutz. I know the bightness is due to a different bulb type or newer filament, but it is sooooo different that once I figure out why it is higher, I will probably replace the other one to match. I triple checked the placement of the entire housing and made sure it was locked in place. Unlike other vehicles I owned, I don't see any way to aim the headlights. Is there something I can look at inside the housing? Thank you!
  16. Well, I finally made it back and glad to see so much input.... This car has been like a tattoo...you get one and you want more! It all started when and M3 killed me at a light. I just thought wow, that was just too easy for him. So, I started looking for boosts anywhere I could find them, and that is what brought me here. I definitely agree that this car is about handling and braking, and it has a great power/weight. But, I thought that with a chip, filters, etc, I might be able to add upwards of 40-50hp when all said and done. And relatively inexpensively. I was just hoping to get it around the 300bhp area similar to the new Cayman's. Sounds like it would be a difficult task.
  17. 2001 boxster S - stock. - USA What is the easiest way to add horsepower off of the get go? I see chips and such, but always read about how they are overpriced and not always provide what they offer. Can someone help a complete mechanical beginner on ways to add power starting from least expensive and simple to major overhauls/conversions? Thanks in advance!
  18. Nice, thanks a lot man! I really appreciate your time in helping me. Something so simple can turn so expensive if you are clueless!!! I wish anyone else luck in fixing their problem. I am sure with time I will be posting for help again, and hopefully knowledgeable people will be as generous! _ and someday I can help others in return!!
  19. TOOL PANTS, YOU THA MAN! Thanks for the help, for now, that has saved me $$ and I don't have to worry about the rain!... it turned out to be the handle. I raised and lowered it about 20 times, some with aggression, and the Brake light displayed finally. Once displayed, the top worked.... However it is still intermittent. I look like I am having a convulsion when I want to lower or raise the roof! LOL My fear now is that it will stop all together.. where should I look to fix the connection/contacts? Take the handbrake housing off and ..?
  20. First, sorry if am hijacking this thread... tell me if it is inappropriate, and I will start a new one! Tool Pants, Yes, sure enough my brake indicator light does not come on when the handbrake is applied. So, after I get away from this desk (1hr or so), I will try to get the light to come on as you suggested. Sorry for the ignorance, but where is the relay/control unit? FYI: No fuses are blown. Just to make sure, I pulled every one! :-\
  21. 2001 Boxster S Having the same problem as of this morning (no indication, just stopped working in the down position). Did you find the solution????? MATHOS, Can you elaborate on "then the top hood and check it out" ? I am new to 1) this car, and 2) to mechanics in general (although inclined). Do you mean the top covering of the handbrake housing? Unscrew the ashtray and such,? Thanks!!!!!!!!!
