  1. Thanks, Richard. I have taken away lots from this board, time to give a little back. Systech, I am using IGO 8, which came with the GPS unit. Is there a better map program out there? Is Tomtom or Destinator better? I haven't used those.
  2. I got sick of not having cupholders in my Boxster. So I set out to find some. The options seemed to be OEM cupholders, either the clip on type, or the single DIN type. And we all know the problems with those - not secure enough fit, not accommodating large cups, etc. Also, the DIN type takes up an entire vertical DIN slot, making fitting double DIN GPS impossible. Other solutions seem to be to use a cutout for cups in the centre console box - which means the lid needs to stay open; and "ultimate cupholder" - which doesn't look OEM at all. So I was searching for generic cupholders on Ebay, and found this: http://cgi.ebay.com....=item439b780b6e And from a seller, the dimensions are: 7 7/16" long by 1" just the cover lid, assembly is 7" x 4 3/4" The width is as close to OEM fit for the Boxster as it gets, for a non-Porsche part! So I bought it. Realising that late model VWs like Passat and Jetta has the same console width as our Boxster, I then bought this: http://cgi.ebay.com....=item3ca672b7af It's entirely possible that other units like this http://cgi.ebay.com....=item3356ef534c would also fit. And before you start, get a rotary tool (like a Dremel). It's an absolute god send! Made things so easy. Here is the unit: Compared to another double DIN unit I originally planned for the mod: The difference is the newer one has a hi res screen. I actually rather liked the volume knob on the low res one. I put the cupholder and GPS unit together, with double sided tape, like this: You can also mount the cupholder on top, like this: I chose to go with the bottom fit, because I don't really like cups placed that high, and the bottom fit actually takes up a few mm less in height, which gives a better fit in the horseshoe frame. Speaking of frame, it's cut up, like this: There was a lip on the inner aspect of the lower border, this was cut to make room to increase the height. This, together with some slight sanding of the bottom of the cupholder was all that's required to make the height of the combo fit just right. Incredibly lucky! Note, you must get rid of the lower lip much as you can. Or the cupholder would be clamped too tight between the frame and the GPS, and it doesn't open when clamped tight. In the above picture, you can see I turned the OEM metal bracket around. This was necessary as the cupholder doesn't extend as deep as the OEM stereo, so the bracket support needs to come forward. You need to drill a hole in the original bracket to allow this. The reason will be very apparent when you actually do this. Here is a close up of the reversed bracket: The GPS antenna is simply placed near the alarm cover. Remove the alarm cover first, thread the GPS wire through, then just fish for it through the horseshoe frame. No need to remove anything else to place the GPS antenna. The thick wire attached to the GPS wire is the loom for my Head-Up-Display (another mod, for another day) :) The rest of the wiring here, with the unit ready to be pushed in: Here is the test fit: You can see that I will need a "n" shaped bezel to fill out the gap. This was obtained by modifying the Passat bezel that came with the GPS. The width is an exact fit, just like the cupholder (maybe 1mm longer, but I just left it). So I just sanded down the top border of the frame. And cut off the bottom border. I don't have a picture with the bottom border removed, only with the thinned top border: Press it in, it's a snug fit, not even sticky taped. And voooowwlaahhh!!!! OEM look!! From afar: With cupholder open: With a large "cup": In summary, get a genuine Jetta cupholder and an aftermarket Passat double DIN GPS! (not affliated with the seller/s, I promise) :)

  4. Thanks for the reply, Orient Express. When you said "It should work just fine", are you referring to my first find (the mirror) or second find (the adaptor) on Ebay?
  5. Yeah, I saw that link in the seller's description. I found this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Adapter-For-Fit-Gen...=item35a0ec8384 There is a picture of the Audi mirror mount (the part that sticks onto the windshield). I wonder if it looks the same as the Porsche one? If so, this would allow people to use all Gentex mirrors.
  6. I saw this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-04-AUDI-...sQ5fAccessories Would it fit a MY97 Boxster? Or did Porsche change the mount over the years?
  7. I am thinking about getting a 3 spoke steering wheel to enhance the car's appearance. Anyone know whether the existing airbag from a 4 spoke fits the 3 spoke? If not, how much is the 3 spoke airbag anyway?
  8. Easyc, how long have you had the 3.6 Tip for? Just wondering how the tip transmission is holding up.
  9. Problem solved! I found a few other posts on the forum. People have had the exact same problem after pulling out those switches to install a GPS. For some reason, the 3rd fuse from the left on the 3rd row blows. I checked mine last night and thought all fuses were okay, but this morning, under better lighting conditions, I found that fuse blown. I replaced it, and everything is ok now. Thanks for your help, nonetheless.
  10. Ignition switch? But the car still starts. And the ACC power comes on (my GPS needs ACC signal to be powered on. And it does).
  11. Today, I took off the horseshoe panel and the two side panels to install a GPS unit. To remove one of the side panels, I pried it open and then disconnected the convertible top switch, the door lock/unlock switch and the mirror heater switch. I am quite certain I connected everything back correctly. But now, those switches don't illuminate. The convertible top switch still operates. But when it does, the windows don't drop at all. The mirror heater switch don't seem to work (the indicator doesn't come on). The door lock/unlock switch doesn't work (doors don't lock/unlock, no indicator). In addition, the window switches, on the centre console near the hand brake, no longer work. I can't wind down the windows at all. The windows still drop that little bit when I open the door. There must be one common problem that's causing all this. Anyone come across anything like this before?
  12. I think these kits only fit later year Boxsters/996s, is that right? Do these mirror kits actually fit a MY97 too? What about a 987 mirror (fits 986?)?
  13. Jeff, did you say the rear view mirror froma 987 is the same as the one from the 986? Are the fittings the same? Would a 987 interior mirror fit on a 986?
  14. I have one in my Lexus. Love it. Works flawlessly. The dimming is gradual, and possibly gradational as well. Going to buy one to install in my Boxster as my next next next next project.
  15. You don't want that water pump to take your engine with it -- replace it now! Mike '00S rebuild due to water pump @ 33.5K miles. Thanks, I am convinced. Thank God I stopped driving it after I figured it was coolant fluid. I originally thought it was oil, dirty at first, till I saw that the color was green. Yes, the original coolant is still in there. So, how does a bad water pump ruin the engine? Overtemp? Got to call Jeff at Sunset so why am I typing this message R. I might as well chime in and say it's the water pump. Actually I had very similar symptoms to yours a year ago. Within about 2 weeks, it deteriorated to needing a top up of 5L a day to get home from work. I carried a few bottles of water in my car just to be safe, while this was happening. You should be able to get a water pump on Ebay, brand new for less than $150. Mine cost exactly that, including shipping to Australia. It's a 4hour DIY. One of the bolts at the back is hard to get to. That took me about 1hr alone. Everything else was straight forward. It's probably the seal that went bad, not the impeller. High temps kill the engine, or permanently damage its parts. Remember the coolant temperature gauge only measures the temperature at that particular point where the sensor is mounted. You could be getting hot spots inside the engine once the coolant level runs low, without this ever registering on the coolant temp gauge. Good luck with the replacement. Easily DIYable.
  16. Thanks for the info, mate. I am in the great down under so postage becomes prohibitive for most things I buy from the US. I was actually looking at something like this: www.raintracker.com I am installing a double DIN GPS and a head-up-display at the moment. The raintrackers are sold out at this moment anyway.
  17. Cheers, Peter. One of the mods I plan on doing in a rear-view camera for parking. I have already run the Video cable together with the rear parcel shelf speaker cables (another mod I am currently doing) from the head unit (another mod), but I don't quite know how to route the video cable from the position of the rear parcel shelf to the back of the car, passing the engine bay. Any ideas?
  18. THanks mate! I've got a raft of mods coming up. Auto head light is one of them.
  19. Is the 4 stalk column from a 2002 911 C2 Porsche the same as the 97 Boxster?
  20. Why buy remanufactured pumps? New ones cost less than $110USD delivered. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsche-911...sQ5fAccessories It seems to have a metallic impeller. I seem to remember my impeller was metal too when I changed mine due to a leak.
  21. Sergiu, I have had the same headers for a year now. Not installed. :) Just never got around to it. Did you put them on a stock Boxster? Did you measure any performance improvements? I have the tip too. Are you saying I will need a new customised cooling pipe? By pipe, you mean a rubber hose?
  22. I am just looking at some bolts from Ebay for fitment. Porsche wants $20AUD for each bolt in Oz!
  23. I am installing a new aftermarket double DIN GPS unit to my MY97 Boxster. The fit is pretty good horizontally, but there is about 28mm of space left vertically. I was wondering if I can fill this with the new style OEM cup holder? I am referring to the half height piece that comes out like a triangle on the newer models from 03+?
