  1. Just finished dealing with the frunk emergency release on a 2003 996 and this thread was helpful, so I wanted to share the result: 1) The vehicle was sold in the US, left-hand drive. The emergency release was on the passenger side. I don't know if that is always the case. 2) The cable was *far* forward of the wheel. So far in I can't figure out how to get a picture of it. And it is not visible from below. 3) We did not have to remove the wheel, only the inner liner above and in front of the wheel. 4) The cable had a loop at the end, and we hooked it with a wire coat hanger. And then used vise grips to pull it back. 5) See picture. It's not great but the best I could do. Follow the coat hook to the cable loop (loop not visible). 6) Celebrate with drink of your choice. Then go buy a new battery. Hope that helps!
