  1. I know I've asked this before, but was unable to find it on here ? Anyhow, I want to replace my spark plugs on my 2002- 911- 996 Carrera . Any recommendations, as to manufacturer , type , part number etc ? Do I need to replace the coil packs as well ? The vehicle is a 2002 996 , but it only has 25,100 miles on it. I am only changing the plugs due to time, as they have been there for over 10 years, and need to be changed in case they seize. However would the coil packs/ coils need to be replaced as well ? And how about the tubes , and ' anything ' else involved in changing the plugs ? Any info , much appreciated ,thanks Dave :help:
  2. Thanks a lot for the info guys. Is there a DYI or video on here ,or anywhere showing how to replace these cables ? Perhaps just wire brushing the ends will suffice ? BTW what is a TSB ? Some type of bulletin ?
  3. Thanks, never thought about the voltage regulator ? It was funny how I was getting more voltage at idle, then doing 3000 RPM ( 77 MPH) on the freeway, couldn't figure that one out ? Is that 14 volts what it should always be when the engine is being driven normally, what are the usual lows and highs in the voltage, on a 996 ?Could there be another problem like the ground strap,or wouldn't that make a difference, Im not to savvy when it comes to electric ?
  4. In the past, I have had weak or dead battery issues, so I bought a battery/ charging system monitor. I don't know if it's the battery, alternator, or what was creating the problem ? I have a 2002 996/911 C2 ,(with only 24,300 miles on the clock) today I put an 'Innova' battery monitor into the cigarette lighter to monitor the charging system and battery. Upon startup, at idle, it read 13.48 volts. At 77MPH on the freeway ,the monitor registered 12.80 volts. I had parking lights on, and the a/c running (same at idle) It appeared the voltage was higher, whilst idling, than when the car was traveling on the freeway at 77mph, doing 3000 RPM. Is this normal, I would have thought at higher rpms the voltage would be higher ? Can anyone advise ? Thanks Dave.
  5. Very informative thank you ! Does just testing the alternator help ? Does Autozone etc do this ? If needed I will buy a new alternator, however I guess I should check / clean the ground strap, and other things first. I hope thats the cure ???
  6. Thanks again Maurice. I'm fairly handy for basic stuff. Any suggestions where to purchase a "Bentley manual" or best manual for a Porsche ? One for a 2002 911/996 ? I believe with a proper detailed manual, I could do a lot of this stuff myself ! I tried auto zone ,but they don't have it. Thanks Dave.
  7. Ok well as long as it doesn't damage anything ? It has always cooled well, so I'll see when it warms up ? I just don't want to bother with all that dashboard removal, it looks to be a real pain, and I can imagine what the dealer would charge ! As long as nothing breaks due to this foam missing ? Thanks ! DC
  8. Yea I see what you mean. Thanks for the instructions, but I really don't want to pull all that apart, question is after I vacuum all of it out, will my A/C be affected , will it still cool ok ? I live in Florida, and A/C is a must. Will this missing foam affect the temps ? I can live with the pieces blowing out I'll just vacuum it out, but no A/C ? Uh oh !
  9. 2002 911/996 with only 24 K on the clock, and garage kept. Tonight I noticed very small pieces of what appeared to be grey foam rubber, all over my dash board, that appeared to be coming out of the defroster vents, and blowing all over the dash ? Any idea as to what this could be and what caused it ? Thanks Dave
  10. I finally believe after all these months thanks to members here,I have found the problem to my starting issues, a faulty ground strap ! Does someone have a photo or can tell me where this is located on my 2002 911/996 ? I live 200 yards from the ocean and everything rusts here, and I believe it's a bad contact, can someone advise ? Dave
  11. Hey Thanks a lot. I went to the site, but which 'TYPE' (they have many categories) have what you described so I can bolt them onto the seat bolts ? It's not clear which ? Thanks Dave.
  12. I took Loren's 2x10 (or are they 2x12's ?? ) method but have 4 separate boards,(doubled up) that is, I cut a long board into 8 different sections , then used recessed bolts and Gorilla glue to fasten 2 of them together. Each is about 2 feet long , and the front is cut on an angle so the tires rollup easy, they work great, and take up less room for storage. What do you think Loren ?
  13. Thanks I'll try anything. The floor mats constantly ride up and get under the clutch pedal. As I said it's really annoying. I'll see if they don't make some type of clip, I think they came with a BMW I bought back in the 90s so the floor mat stays in place, never used them, but now, with my 911 I sure could use something like that !
  14. I know this is kind of nit picky, but I have the original floor mats in my 2002 996, and the driver floor mat is constantly riding up the floor where it actually gets in the way of the clutch pedal etc. I have to adjust it, and pull it back all the time, it almost caused me to get in a crash yesterday. I attach it back to the factory velcro stays, but within a few miles there loose again, it's a real pain, and dangerous ! The velcro attachments don't seem to work that well, and the round factory velcro connectors have also come loose rendering them pretty useless. Anyone got any good ideas how to secure the mats to the under carpet,it's a real pain !!! Thanks Dave
  15. Thanks DB Joe (apparently we live close, ref Daytona, I'm in Ponce Inlet ) I believe THAT could be my problem, the starter that is. I guess I'll just wait till it fails again. Thanks Joe, see you on A1A sometime :D
  16. I thought the same thing at first when I got mine, it was just those big soft tires ! They are that soft, they smell a bit , after you've been driving it a bit,no worries !
  17. Back to the original topic. Ok does anyone else have this problem where the vehicle starts ok, you drive 16 miles or more, park it, return an hour or so later and it is a very weak start,or fails to start ? Apart from all that is previously written, ref a drain, a friend alerted me when the engine is hot , the solenoid to it sometimes fails, also the ground wire, has corrosion. Several 911 owners I have spoke to mentioned this unreliable starting problem. It's NOT the battery, the drain is minimum when the vehicle is parked in the garage, any other suggestions ??? :help:
  18. Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll get back to you after my trip out of town. Whats funny is, at the Rolex 24 last year, at the Porsche corral (here in Daytona) two other guys with 911's said they had the same problem ? A weak or dead battery, so I'm not the only one, the mystery continues ? It's hard to believe no one else out there has had this problem ? Some times I feel like a kid plugging my "Hot wheels" vehicle in ,every time I come in the garage
  19. Loren, when the vehicle is at home in the garage, I keep it unlocked so no alarm is on, the only thing taking any juice is probably the clock or some other tiny instrument ? Therefore there should not be any drain right ? I'll do what you say with the amp meter, shall I put its leads on each terminal + & - or what ? I'm not to good at electronics so could you be a bit more specific ? Have you heard this type of complaint before ?
  20. Yes been there, done that, its charging fine. Does this happen often ? How about what my friend says about the electronics running all the time ? Dave.
  21. I have a 2002 996/911 , lately I have been driving the car a lot more than I have in the past (I only have 24K on the odometer ) Point is, on several occasions whilst out and about I come back to the parked car,and the battery sounds very weak when I crank the motor,or has failed to start at all, requiring me to jump start it. Now, this is not just,a battery issue, I have had several Dura last batteries in this vehicle over the last few years (From Auto zone) Even when I have used the car on a regular basis, with a new battery in it, drove about 60 miles on the highway at 70 mph + get to my destination, and it still cranks weak, or dies on me,on the 2 nd try ! It's really frustrating, and I have to keep a Porsche brand battery tender connected to the car most of the time,as this let down happens often, even after it has been hooked up to the tender,it lets me start it initially in the garage, and sounds strong, but after I get to my destination, park it and come back a little later it's weak or fails ! A friend of mine had a 2000 996/911 and had the same problem if he left the car sitting over a week it wouldn't start. It frustrated him so much he sold it and bought an M-5. He told me the electronics in a Porsche are running all the time so that makes the battery weak ? I love my 911,but as I said, this happens all to often, with new batteries, with regular daily use, even with the tender attached, which I do most of the time. Please, can anyone advise , HELP !!! :help:
  22. Thanx guys , what I have noticed is that just regular car wash shampoo works fine, and a little elbow grease. I'l try that P 21 S as well, and see if it works ok. I was wondering about simple green as thats suppose to be safe ? Cheers Dave
  23. As I was washing my 996/911 the other day, I used some wheel cleaner made by Castrol, I sprayed it on the wheels as directed,( I have the 5 spoke upgraded ones with the colored crest) after a minute I hosed it off. The results were minimal ( I ALWAYS wash the wheels first, then dispose of that water, then the body, with fresh water) I use to have a BMW M roadster and used similar stuff, years ago, and it permanently marred the wheels ! My question is I believe all this so called "Wheel Cleaner" stuff is nothing but a scam, and most of it doesn't work worth a hoot ! Does anyone have a recommendation as to what to use "simple green" " Orange Blast" etc ? Also any special, or easy way to clean them ? Thanks Dave.
  24. Ok thanks Loren, but what about the "TIME" factor ? The spark plugs have been in there for 10 years, but only 24K on the odometer, the car runs good, so should I change them due to time, 10 years ? And what about the fluid questions below ? Speaking of time, I have always changed the coolant, and brake fluids as needed, but how about the, gearbox lube, rear end lube, and power steering fluid , those three are all original fluids/ lube, again only 24 K miles, but 10 years old, is it necessary to be concerned about the latter as well, is time a factor for the gearbox, rear end,and power steering fluids, with only 24 K on the vehicle, do I need to drain & change those three ??? I live close to Daytona beach Fl ( Florida humidity factor ? ) Thanks Brit Dave
