  1. Thanks guys for the advice. But what it was, was my floor mat had crept up high on the floor, and hence the safety clutch switch, was not depressed. I pulled the mat back down into it's proper position, pushed in the clutch again, and she started right up. I couldn't believe it was something so simple !
  2. After having so many battery problems, I finally bought an official Porsche trickle charger, and a new battery. Battery appears ok, but when I try to start the car nothing happens ? I have a 2002 911 / 996 with only 21000 miles on the clock. Any ides ? Could it be a fuse, relay, starter motor perhaps ? HELP !
  3. Thanks a lot ! Your correct, I remember hearing that before. Time to change it !
  4. Is the 'TIME" factor that important ? Does the oil break down or somehow lose it's viscosity or what , after say , a year or so,if you only have say, 2 or 3000 on the stuff ? Why would that happen if the engine has not been used that much during that time period ? Thanks DC
  5. I own 5 vehicles, so my Porsche 911/ 996 only gets about 2500- 3000 miles put on it every year. I drive it at least once a week and put about 20 - 30 miles on it each time. I also use "Mobil 1 0-40 weight " ( the dealer told me that, but my 2002 owners manual calls for something different ? ) #1 Is that correct ? Also, #2 do I need to change the oil every year if I only put less than 3000 miles on the clock each year, hence the question, time vs mileage ? Thanks Brit Dave
  6. Thanks everyone. And now of course there is this new stuff from Porsche, who said not to use anything before ? It's "Keropur" from Porsche on "their" web site : http://www.porsche.com/china/en/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/fueladditive/
  7. Thanks guys ! Now I guess it's ok to use fuel additives because Porsche puts their name on the can ? Does "any one out there" use any fuel additives in their 911's , or any Porsche for that matter ??? If this new Porsche stuff is basically Techron, (by another name) does that mean Techron is ok ? I don't want to contaminate anything in the fuel system. On that note with my 2002 911/ 996 I was told that the fuel filter was an integral part of the fuel tank and you can't change it ? Wow, just like the "lifetime" coolant in the cooling system , but that's another issue, I'm not to sure about things like that. Anyhow ,I'm getting off topic here, lets talk fuel additive reviews and recommendations. Thanks Dave....
  8. Ok, so your saying it's really just Techron ? Funny, but Porsche dealers and enthusiasts use to denigrate Techron ? How about that "Lucas" upper cylinder lube & injector cleaner stuff ,you just pour in the gas tank ? I've heard a lot of positive things about that, any other opinions
  9. For YEARS I've heard and read that Porsche does not recommend , any type of fuel additive (same with oil) also read it by owners many times here. Techron , Lucas top cylinder lube/ injector cleaner have been mentioned, with some saying : "Porsche says it's ok to use these now and then, but change your oil soon after " unquote. But the other day I found this Porsche link for their "own" fuel additive ! Anyone heard of this or tried it ? I wouldn't be surprised if Lucas or Chevron made it Any thought or comments on this product ? Oh yea here's the link You may have to copy & paste, or simply google "Porsche fuel additive" : http://www.porsche.com/china/en/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/fueladditive/
  10. Actually I found out there is an actual genuine "Porsche" fuel additive. This link worked the other day, but was not working at the present time, but here it is :http://www.porsche.com/china/en/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/fueladditive/ Apparently everything we heard about Porsche NOT recommending a fuel additive is NOT true, they have their own.
  11. Move out of S. Florida like I did ! I now live just south of Daytona ,and don't miss that section of I-95 at all ! LOL Good luck, that stuff "WILL" happen down there. Also, get 3 or 4 estimates ,you would be surprised,of the different cost's some body shops will tell you ?
  12. I'd open up your following distance, and even if someone does slide in front of you, filling the gap, the most you're gonna lose is a microsecond or two when you continue to maintain the proper distance. Considering the consequences otherwise, microseconds are cheap.
  13. I've read some pros & cons in regards to fuel additives like Chevron Techron (got different opinions on that one ? ) But has anyone tried "Lucas" upper cylinder lubricant & injector cleaner ? I have tried it on all my other cars with no worries,in fact on a recent highway trip (Daytona Bch to Ft Lauderdale) I got fantastic gas mileage due to it in my M-3 The parts guys swear by it ! Anyone got any thought on the Lucas stuff , or Techron , or other similar fuel additives, and I wonder if Porsche has one , or recommends a particular brand ?
  14. Any thoughts about putting some type of screen behind the openings ? Like window screen ? The air would still easily flow in,but NOT the debris. And does one really need to remove the bumper ?
  15. Thanks a lot guys As a new comer I gotta tell you I love this site, thanks again. Dave....
  16. I guess I was lucky,as one of my colored Porsche wheel crest's fell off and I found it on the garage floor. I understand these little badges are $65.00 each as well,as others have said on here. Question ! So this does not happen again. Does anyone know the best type of adhesive to use,and how to prep the surface,so this never happens again ? Next time I may not be that lucky in finding it, and yes I know about super glue, been there done that on my BMW M-3 wheel crest, it fell off within a month. I need something that bonds permanently, any suggestions guys ? Cheers Brit Dave....
  17. One of my wheel crest's simply fell off, on my 2002 996 Luckily I found it in the garage. I assume I simply have to glue it back on,without removing anything ? Can anyone recommend the best adhesive & prep to re-attach this crest to my wheel ? I don't want it to happen again, any recommendations on what to use ? Thanks Brit Dave....
  18. Is removing the bumper really necessary ? Can't you just get in that space with a "very" small vacuum attachment ? Also how about putting some screening behind the intake vents, like screen on a window. Wouldn't that stop all that debris, without restricting air flow ? Another pain in the butt service that has to be performed, courtesy of Stuttgart eh ?
  19. Thanks guys, but my 996 is "totally" stock ! I only have a radar detector attached,no cell phone "NOTHING" else, but I "ALWAYS" unplug it upon arriving home into the garage. The "only "drain I can think of is the red light that flashes in the center by the radio, could that be the drain ? I don't even lock it in the garage. While I was on holiday in the UK and europe for 7 weeks , I left the Porsche battery tender hooked up the entire time. Got home and it started right up. Drove it a few days then parked it again, this time without the tender hooked up. About 5 days later,I went to start it,and dead again. This is a new battery from the Auto zone (Which are rated #2 in the USA ) It seems I must ALWAYS have to plug in the tender all the time. I feel like I'm charging my kids old Hot wheels jeep he use to have. By the way I got that battery in Jan 2010,and took it back for another one "gratis" so we shall see how this one fares ? I understand many guys have the same problem, and when I go out ,I always carry my B&D jump start ,just in case !!!!! Dave.....
  20. Yes ,I found that out also. What I can't change the fuel filter in my 2002 996 ! Amazing, but true. I wonder why Porsche did this ? I firmly believe the fuel filter should be changed ,just like all the other filters. Perhaps this is just another way the dealers can make more $$$ ? Is there any way to fit another auxiliary fuel filter into the system ? Have they continued this "integral fuel filter" nonsense on models after 2002 and the 996 or 997 models ? Anyone have any thoughts on this ? Cheers Dave.
  21. The dealer here in Orlando, is also outrageous as far as the price goes. What I do (to save doing it myself) is I go to Wal-mart (yea them ? ) Buy my oil there, and take my mail order filter to a local guy who usually works on BMW's but can easily do this. The parts (oil & filter) in total cost me "about" $62 -$68 usually and the BMW guy charges me $15.00 for labor, and does the usual checks while up on the lift. So for 'around' $80.00 I get what the dealer would charge me about $280.00 LOL ! Why would you go to them ? Or do it yourself . The Porsche dealers REALLY screw people on this service. Dave....
  22. But any explanation why these batteries let you down ? This is a major problem with 911's . A friend of mine got rid of his for this reason alone, other than that he loved the car,but after a week or so (being out of town etc) the battery would be dead and the car would not start of course. Anyone know why these batteries drain so fast , compared to ANY other car ? Cheers Dave...
  23. Why does the 911 / 996 have so many battery issues, like it wont start , due to a dead battery ? I have 3 other cars ,with no problems like this. I love my 911, but this dead battery issue is really getting me down. I use a Porsche battery tender, but even then it will let me down, when I travel some where . A friend told me that the "electronics in a 911 are running all the time ,and that causes the drain" is this true ? Anyone know the answer , or a solution ? HELP !!!!!
  24. Once again my 2002 /911 996 battery let me down. Why does this seem to happen so often to Porsches ? I have a 97 BMW M-3 , a 2003 Ford Escape, and a 2005 Dodge Dakota, all of those have batteries that are several years old, and all those vehicles ALWAYS start without any problem. Several years ago,my friend got rid of his 2001 911 simply because of this issue alone. Someone told me it's because "the electronics in the 911 are running all the time " is this true ? So again it was back to the store for a new battery. Do I have to keep the Porsche battery tender hooked up all the time on this vehicle ? Also , even if I do , once I leave my garage ,and then park it somewhere, I worry that it will let me down again,as this has also occurred on numerous occasions, what's a guy to do ? HELP !!!!!
