My car is doing this same thing the dealer said it was the window regulator, his cost to replace $500 $290 for the part and $200 to install. However the window regulator can be had for $175 from http://www.the-best-source.com/ I'll let you know how easy it was when I'm finished.

Apparently there has been a price hike. I just checked the same site and it's not $239...
did you check with sunset?

I think I,m going to have to change a window regulator shortly - window squeaking loudly.I,ve found the instructions on removing the door panel but cant find the info on changing the regulator. Can you direct me to the relevent topic please. Also what parts do i need to buy?
i used this procedure. it's for a boxster but 996 is the same.

My passenger door makes a "popping" noise when it opens. Especially in cold weather. Any ideas? I am also having problems with the window regulator. Is this related?
1999 C2 Cabriolet
Thanks,
Patrick
most likely the window is not dropping a bit when you open the door and gets stuck on the channel. had this problem on mine, replaced the window regulator. there is a procedure here
http://www.bombaydigital.com/boxster/projects/window/
BTW, regulators are on sale at sunset porsche right now (link above)

I have a 99 C2.
Mine did the same thing last summer, turn on the A/C no cool air.
I bought a $24 AC Oil/Coolant kit and it showed my coolant being low.
I added more coolant to the correct level and it has been cold ever since.
Just something to check before you spend all that money.

Can you give more details on where the ports located and how much pressure should be read??
thanks
jorge
Ports are located to the left of the battery, under the plastic cover. The refill kits (Autozone, NAPA, etc) have a built in gauge that shows correct pressure. If you have a lot of mileage on yours, get the "High Mileage" refill, it has a different oil booster. BTW, you DID realize this post was from 2006, right???!!!!
yep sure did. mine started acting up recently and did a search.
thanks for the help

if u don't feel VERY comfortable with the install just don't do it, too many potential problems

richard,
thanks for that tip. i wasnt looking forward to having an odd switch.
I used a footwell light switch (most non-descript) for mine. mounted it on the open spot below PSM switch. Only functions not avail is the speed gong.

Having done this on a variety of vehicles in the past, they can either be REALLY straightforward, or as mentioned above an expensive nightmare. It is imperative to mark, label, etc. during disassembly. I would ALWAYS suggest at least locating a local speedo shop prior to taking it apart. Worst case you can drop it off with them to correct your errors. Hard to argue though against the appearance when completed though!
Good luck.
I replaced my tach with a yellow one from Gemballa. Wasn't that bad (getting glue on gauge face was trickiest part). Everything worked fine afterwards......do agree that one must be very careful with this project.

Hi Folks,
My '99 C4 hunts at idle when it is warm - sometimes.... A couple of quick taps of the accelerator usually makes the problem go away for a minute or so. The car does it only when it is warm and the size of the fluctuations are reduced when the ac is on. This car is fitted with the e-gas system.
Any suggestions / thoughts, would be appreciated.
Derek
Hi,
I have a 99 c2 that did this for quite sometime until I cleaned out the throttle body with some carburettor cleaner. When warm and at idle, it would drop down to about 5-600 rpms and then gradually come back up to 900rpms. Very rarely it would stall, but once I gave the throttle body a clean out I've also noticed it fires up quicker and straight away settles into a solid idle right on 900rpms. You can get a DIY description on Rennlist where Orient Express and Cosmos explain it under a thread entitled "Correcting a lumpy or erratic Idle' or something to that effect.
+1 on this one. I removed and cleaned my TB. This "fixed" erratic idle issue. Also with a TB cleaner moistened rag, wipe down the interior of the inake as much as possible.

any insight or how to on the replacement of the window regulator on the drivers side door on a 1999 996. Dealer wants 400. plus to do it!
I replaced mine on the passenger side, symptom was window would not drop after pulling on door handle. Sunset had the best price ~190 i think.
follow toolpant's link (bombay). Pretty straight forward and take your time.
good luck.

Greetings Gurus,
I finally took the plunge and bought the car. Its parked in my garage. I keep gaping at it. It stares back. I feel we have a connection there.
1. I bought a warranty through the dealer for 3 years or till the car reaches 100K miles from aswarranty. Has anyone had experience with them. I have the platinum coverage which includes everything except wear / tear.
2. How hard is it to replace a bulb in the headlight (found out one of the bulbs - not headbeams / not xenon - but I guess a courtesy light?? that sits on the outside corner of the light assembly is not working).
3. I want to put the non smokers kit on..I found the tray..wanted to know if I can plug the cig liter with some cap.
4. I have a feeling that the battery is weak. Anytime I start the car, I see the amp meter going down all the way - once its startes it hovers around the 13-14 amp mark. - is this normal.
Thanks
Prad
Nice and I agree, widebodies look better than Narrow.
On the battery, if you will be replacing, go with an Optima battery. There is a DIY on this board.

You can touch them up yourself it is only to what degree you want to do it. If there are gashesthen you can use touch up paint bottles ( after cleaning thuroughly with a paint prep) but it might look better to just leave them be. The next level would be to remove the parts give them a good sanding your self including 220, 400, 800, possibly even 1200 to get them totally ready, and then talk to a local paint shop about what they would charge to shoot them for you. This is my direct advice as paint is so easy to mess up and you can just spend a little and get professional results. The only thing I will dually recommend is that you use a good cleaning spirit and clean it thuroughly. Some of the interior protectant products have a silicone based goo in them that will fisheye your paint to the point of no return. You could paint them your self with a can but I do not recommend that at all. Good luck with your choice.
I got a fresh pair from msroadrace for 200. easy replacement. http://www.msroadrace.com/

Thank you all for your replies. For the record, I am not frying MAFs (knock on wood). I was just considering the purchase of a K&N Aircharger and those units have a "high coincidence rate" to make MAFs fail (apparently not due to overoiling, but the inability to handle the newfound large air volumes that pass through it).
I installed the K&N also, I did not use the K&N Filter.....I used an AEM Dryfilter (~$50). No oiling required with same or better performance than K&N. No MAF issues going on about 6 months.
part number that will fit is AEM 21-204DK AEM Dryflow - 3.50" Short Neck 5" Element. I used speedfreaks.com but you can search for other sources.

Well Porsche states that 65-70% of ALL Porsches ever built are still on the roads. So Porsche obviously wants the Sports Car public to believe its vehicles are reliable and they are paying a premium for it. I still believe they are one of the most reliable Sports Cars autos around. The people that make the most noise are always the ones that have/had the misfortune of having a bad experience. People that have no problems never rant on forums. So in essense it seems like Porsche has big reliability issues if you read forums with individuals having issues and posting them.
I think the BIG picture would say something else. Porsche cars are no longer 'mostly' made by hand. Porsche is also the most profitable automaker. Amazing...
If you want to get Porsche's attention you have to finda way to send a big message to them. Like creating a site dedicated to Porsche defects with the infamous RMS issue, etc. Then send the link to them and see if they react. Definitely wait until the HIT numbers are high. Maybe even notify auto mags about it. Porsche seeing it in euro auto mags would get attn! lol
+1
