  1. I am assuming you have the window going back up to the top prematurely when using the outside door handle. I am currently replacing the latch mechanism which is supposed to fix that. You were SOOO close having taken all that door apart. You will need to go back in and do it all over again. The part is only $129 from SunSet (my favorite). I have the door apart and was just looking for warning info on the airbag. will post when I get it all installed, some pics if I can get them while I am in the there. PS. the help on the electrical connectors is much appreciated. Sucks to have the panel in hand and worry how long you can hold it while in a dark garage. lol Cheers,
  2. I also purchased the 987 manual set from him -- totally agree with you! Regards, paul... Me too! Good stuff, lots of help. Thanks librarian!
  3. I had my battery replaced under warranty - 05 997S w/43K miles by my local dealer. They hesitated at first and indicated I would risk paying the $265 installed price if my battery did not 'fail' their tests properly (it was like a Monty Python skit - dead Parrot). Talk about discouragement. I felt I owed it to all here to follow through and report. When I arrived the service advisor blew me off for 20 minutes by walking around the parking lot with his cell phone, I'm certain it was an important customer. Interesting start. Long story short (we seem to not get along - no point in dwelling on it) he was not able to start the car to get it into service so they intalled a new battery while the car was in the parking lot and sent me on my way 1:45 mintues after I arrived. No charge but - 1) Now my Sports Chrono clock on the dash is always lit up (especially annoying at night) and 2) I have a 'Raised rear brake light failure' message. In fact the 'non' moveable 3rd brake light is not at 100% (15% at best). I hooked up my Durametric ODB2 tester via laptop and cleared out 'low voltage' faults from just about every system, likely due to the serious issues the battery was having trying to start the car. Is it correct that I should have been handed back my car in such condition? FYI, it seems that one of the early symptoms is that the radio will shut down during starting (not be able to keep playing), in case you are looking for an early warning sign. Anyway - my point is that the battery is under warranty but some dealerships are either not allowing this or trying their best (worst) to discourage such claims. I will now need to return to see if any of the remaining faults (the lit up Chrono and the Raised Brake Light failure) can be resolved without more 'new' issues. It seems that service can be 'one step forward/ two steps back' process around here. If anyone has run into similar faults and knows any other way to resolve them (other than a dealer visit) please let me know. Drive Right -Cheers
  4. I do not know how anyone could change the mileage on the odometer without getting into the computer and resetting a bit or something. I would hope the folks at Porsche are smarter than that. How cheap is cheap? Did you do a PPI? , have any maintainence records? and for what it's worth, a carfax? You can find out where or who the original dealer was with the VIN # and see if thay have any records. They will have the milage and services performed and the dates they were performed. If the car was serviced at at porsche dealer, with a little leg work, you can see if the service records support the milage on the odometer. What does the car have for options? and what is the milage. I looked at a 99 c2 with 105K for $23 k. Is this a private sale? Good luck Have a dealer check on the number of engine hours. The mileage divided by the number of hours should be a reasonable number. Don't be affraid of the cheap price... 996 prices have fallen through the floor especially this time of year.
  5. Durametric has released a new version of the 997 Software which will be able to do much more that it was capable of previously. If you own a 997 this will of great interest to you. You can get the software update free at their website. 2005-2006 Porsche 911(997) Module Read Codes Reset Codes Actual Values ECU Information DME (Engine) Yes Yes Yes Yes Tiptronic Yes Yes No No Airbag Yes Yes No No AWS Yes Yes No No Alarm Yes Yes No No ABS 8 / PSM Yes Yes No No PASM Yes Yes No No Gateway Yes Yes No No Instrument Cluster Yes Yes No No Air Conditioning Yes Yes No No Vehicle Electrical System Yes Yes No No Steering Column Switch Yes Yes No No Front Body Computer Yes Yes No No Rear Body Computer Yes Yes No No Left Door Computer Yes Yes No No Right Door Computer Yes Yes No No
  6. To get to the instrument cluster you only need to pull on the trim piece right below the cluster and then remove two torx screws. (Adjust the steering column all the way down and out first) Then just pull the cluster stright forward and then to the left (or right) to clear the steering wheel once the plug in the back has been disconnected. Sorry Loren, I am replying based on wanting just the cluster out.
  7. No person stole it, I guarantee it. They sometimes fall out. I lost a couple over 4 years of 996 ownership. Buy more than one and of course use Sunset Porsche for all your parts. - Loren rocks!
  8. I own a '05 997 S and the driver's side floormat is completely worn down where the right heel contacts the floor. The car is well within warranty and the floormats are the Porsche originals that came with the car when new. I know this may sound picky (cheap?) but so what - the floormats are obviously cheap. P.S. Makes you wonder if perhaps the right heel mark in the carpet correlates to how much fun it is to flat out, as much as possible, in a particular car?
  9. I had been running Michelin Pilots for years and paying thousands of $ each year for tires (996 - with 285 - 30 -18 rears twice per year) I recently started using the KUMHO 295-30-18 (and in front the 235-40-18) and am VERY VERY pleased. They cost about a 1/3 as much, handle very well in the dry, have superb wet traction and seem to wear much less. I will never go back. They are smooth, quiet and the balance is excellent. My 996 has the PSS9 suspension set to about 50% firm F/R and after a 19 hour drive from KC to Montreal (F1 weekend) both I and my co-driver were totally refreshed. After 7 identical drives using the Michelins this was by far the best thanks to the tires. A set of 4 given my sizes is less then $600 including road hazard protection. What a deal, if you drive your car a lot, which you should. Again, I can't stress how well these also do in the rain. Flat out in first gear - the car just goes where you point it in the RAIN - awesome. I would like to hear from others who have tried these tires.
